Bob Hope was the answer to the first. You had the other two right (Blessed played the Duke of Oxford, IIRC). The movie came out in 1989, I think; I wrote "relatively recent" because there hasn't been a more recent filmed version of that play that I know of.

    DQ:

    Last name start with B?

Did a cartoonist show you with a hat that was much too big for you?
Did you once play a character who hid a fugitive while doing the dishes?
Did Chief Justice Rehnquist quote a poem about you in a case about flag desecration?

Yay for Brian Blessed! He just seems like the type, even though I wasn't sure if he'd ever played any Shakespearean roles.

    1. Um, no I am not Bugs Bunny?
    2. Nor am I Bob Hoskins.
    3. Seriously? Wow, the mind boggles. No I am not Betsy Ross, maybe?

Not terribly obscure - CIAS already used Brunel as a mystery person awhile back, as it happens. See post 650.

I'm calling foul on this one. Bugs Bunny in a huge hat.

Damn. I thought Betsy Ross made sense!

    I'm giving you one DQ.

    New IQs from EH

    1. No, I am not Bertie Wooster (I can think of two other Bs but I might as well go with the most famous one)

    2. Hmm. I don't think Angela Bassett played a detective in this, she was just muscle/protection. But she's the only B I can remember, so STUMPED.

    3. I dunno, the Bugaloos? Just kidding. So very STUMPED.

Did you play a private eye in Strange Days? - Also right as to Angela Bassett.
Was your species's name first written in a school examination booklet? - Bilbo Baggins. Tolkien wrote the opening lines of The Hobbit in just such a booklet: "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit...."

    Died since 1950?

Bilbo! Oh, I'm an idiot, I was thinking of the species name, not the character name. I had a feeling this was Tolkien but for the life of me I couldn't remember any creatures in LOTR that began with a B. (I'm sure there are some, and just this second I remember the Balrog. It still would've been wrong, presumably, but at least I'd've been close.)

    EH IQs:

    1. No, I am not Aaron Burr.
    2. No, I am not Laura Bush.
    3. Hmm. I'm guessing another First Lady, if someone was asking about Eleanor. ("Do you model yourself on any other First Ladies," that sorta stupid question.) I'm gonna guess, No, I am not Barbara Bush?

    CatInASuit IQs:

    1. No, I am not Benjamin Button?
    2. I'm guessing baseball isn't your thing, and this may be a cricket question, but I'll guess No, I am not Babe Ruth?
    3. No, I am not Biggles!

Laura B. was easy. And I figured Babs was just the sort to be bitchy about Eleanor Freakin' Roosevelt.

    EH IQs:

    2. Oh God, poker. I can't even. Stumped.

    3. Ookay, geometric shapes in a granular medium.... a kaleidescope? No, I am not the Beatles? (Re: the girl with the k. eyes?)

CIAS gets another of my weaknesses, comic books! Does no one know Archie? Ask me anything about Archie and I'm totally there.

    CIAS IQs:

    1. I vaaaaguely remember a show called The Magician but I don't remember if the person I'm thinking of was in it. As a monster, I can only think of The Hulk, so I'll guess: No, I am not Bill Bixby?

Holy crap, that was a total WAG on Barry White.

    1. Um. No I am not Wild Bill Hickock? I don't know if he was ever a lawman in the South. I know he was in Kansas and maybe Texas? Texas is the South, right?

    2. Damn I am definitely STUMPED on the nipples. Wait, wasn't there a joke about the Batman suit having nipples? Okay, No, I am not Batman. (Except I can't imagine this being in a trailer...)

    3. I can only think of two "B" serial killers, and David Berkowitz definitely didn't kill anyone indoors. So... No, I am not Ted Bundy? Maybe? Probably STUMPED.

    Previous IQs:

Were you a notorious nonfictional Southern cop? - Hickok was never a lawman in the South that I could find. I was thinking of Bull Connor, notorious for his heavy-handed tactics during the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham, Ala.
Did you, in a movie trailer, suggest an associate check out your nipples? - Bob Costas, at the very end of the trailer for BASEketball:
Did you first kill someone in a bathroom? - James Bond, in Casino Royale.

    Lemme think of some DQs....

Aw, I thought Brooks was a good answer. Ah well.

    CIAS IQ:

    1. STUMPED. No clue. A scientist turned to stone? Can't even fathom what that would be. Is there a Medusa nearby?

    2. I dunno, no, I am not Bruce Dern? Only because he was in Silent Running and... I really have no idea. Probably STUMPED unless I really got lucky.

    3. Sounds like a science fiction film, so... no, I am not Ray Bradbury? Except I don't think he wrote any screenplays aside from, um, Moby Dick I think. Sigh.

    Previous IQs:

Are you a fictional, curvy cartoon woman whose family was much wealthier than that of your eventual husband, and whose family has hardly been heard from since you married him? - Blondie, from the comic strip of the same name.
Is your suburban Washington home maintained as a virtual shrine by the organization which you helped found? - Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. I visited it in late 2000.
Did your lover's dog bite you when you were sexually a bit too aggressive? - Napoleon Bonaparte.

    Three DQs reserved.

DUDE. A cartoon is not a comic strip! What kind of geek are you? Geeze.

Although I'm surprised that Blondie's family is wealthier than the Bumsteads. Dagwood often wears a tux! Maybe he's still trying to dress up to her class level.

CIAS -- I do know RHPS but I don't remember Brad turning to stone! Actually I listened to the soundtrack religiously but have only seen the film once, so maybe that's my problem. Argh.

LOL. Ah, I do love Tim Curry. And I never fail to smirk at seeing Patricia Quinn in that role. To me she'll always be Livilla, lover of Sejanus (Patrick Stewart!) from I, Claudius.

I'll take one DQ and leave the last one for EH

DQ: Broke social taboos about being female ie. She did things women were not expected to do.

As for I, Claudius, BBC production at its finest.

Well, I could nitpick on the timeframe (the bulk of her most famous work was in the late 19th century) but yes, I am Nellie Bly!

...Who is the inspiration for the heroine of my upcoming paranormal gaslight romance, by the way. Tell your friends!

Her husband was a millionaire industrialist; when he died, Bly took over running the company, but later went back to journalism. In addition to her famous exposing of awful practices at the Blackwell Institute for the Insane, she also successfully "beat" the Around the World in 80 Days record "set" by Jules Verne's fictional hero.

    1. Are you a composer of some of the world's most beautiful piano music?
    2. Despite owning a car, do you travel primarily by foot?
    3. Were you cast as only the second lead in a popular movie musical where you would have very few opportunities to sing (unlike the primary lead role), despite a) being famous for having one of the best singing voices in the world, and b) the primary lead performer having a passable voice at best--but definitely not known for his singing?

Ha! I forgot about differing tastes and all, but Liszt is a good alternate. I'll rephrase.

#2 was Fred Flintstone, who of course propels his car via his feet. #3 was Frank Sinatra, who was cast as Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls instead of Skye Masterson, played by Marlon freaking Brando. Let me emphasize this: Sinatra didn't turn down the Skye Masterson role (which has the famous "Luck Be a Lady Tonight" song) because he preferred Nathan; the producers actually wanted Brando in the lead role because of his popularity, despite the fact that he sucks as a singer. Sorry, this still bugs me because I really love the music in G&D and while Brando acted the smooth role of Masterson very well, they had to cut two of the best songs in the musical because no way could Brando pull them off.

    IQs:

    1. Are you a composer whom people often mistake for French, and was once played by an Englishman in a biographical film, whose music for piano is considered by many including yours truly to be some of the most beautiful ever written?

    2. This is probably a gimme, but are you my favorite character in the Lord of the Rings who, rather astonishingly, avoids the choie curse by a) not dying, b) not going mad, and c) ending up with a great love interest?

    3) According to this possibly apocryphal story, did one of your earliest screen test reports read dismissively: "Can't act. Balding. Can dance a little"?

    DQs:

    4. From one of the UK countries/colonies?

#1 was Frédéric Chopin. (He's Polish.)

    IQs:

    1. Are you a fictional, bright, empathetic young girl living in a poverty-stricken section of New York in the early 20th century who idolizes your alcoholic, artistic, dreamer of a father?

    2. Are you an actress who suffered from mental illness and was allegedly subjected to a pretty barbaric treatment?

    3. Are you either a nobleman who some claim is responsible for some of the greatest writing in history, or an identically-named artist whose work was recently bought at auction for the highest amount ever?

Well, I'll give you #1 although her name is Francie Nolan (and ATGiB is my favorite American novel btw), but I'm going to have to go to the judges on #2. You named the chocolatier; the actress is Frances Farmer. And since I had a theme going, #3 was (or were) Francis Bacon(s). 16th/17th century diplomat, nobleman and author Sir Francis Bacon is one of the many people claimed to be the "real" writer of Shakespeare's plays, while his 20th century counterpart, painter Francis Bacon, painted a lot of pretty creepy stuff. His trio of panels called Three Studies of Lucian Freud sold for $142 million(!) at Sotheby's last fall.

So, judges, can we have a ruling? Oh, I'm sorry, they say no for "Fannie Farmer" vs. "Frances Farmer" since they are actually two different celebs. I'll withhold my next IQs and DQs until CIAS has his next questions.
