I remember the "obsidian" quotation pretty clearly, but I will withdraw the Loretta Swit, H.L. Mencken and Lyle Lovett questions.

    DQ:

    Antagonist?

    IQs:

Did you play a crazy mom in a Seventies movie?
Were you a mayor who had a convention center named after him?
Did you call the U.S. Constitution "a covenant with Hell"?

Well, I'll take your Loretta Swit DQ since that seems the correct phrasing of the question and I don't see anything wrong with it. As opposed to the Frank Burns one, which was misleading. And also wrong, ahem:

As clearly as this audio clip, from s04 ep06, "The Bus" where Frank is pranked by Hawk & BJ and thinks he hears a Chinese guy on their radio (but it's actually the Korean soldier du jour played by Soon Tek-Oh)? (It's 27 seconds into the clip.)

Yep, I have M*A*S*H videos and I'm not afraid to use (or clip) 'em.

You see, you fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia,' but only slightly less well known is this: 'Never go in against a M*A*S*H fangirl when a post-Season 3 quote is on the line.'"

    IQs:

    1. No, I am not Piper Laurie? (From Carrie?)

    2. STUMPED. The only Mayor I can think of off-hand is John Lindsay, and he certainly doesn't have a convention center named after him here.

    3. There is no such person who did that, or at least, I don't think it's the person you're thinking of. I did a term paper on William Lloyd Garrison and the actual quote is a "covenant with death, an agreement with hell."

    DQs:

    1. Not real
    2. Not American
    3. Male
    4. Would not be alive today if real. And more's the pity.
    5. Last name starts with L
    6. First appeared in a novel
    7. Has indeed appeared in other forms of media other than novels
    8. Published since 1950
    9. European
    10. Did not appear in a science fiction novel
    11. British
    12. Not generally considered an action hero
    13. Not upper-class or aristocratic
    14. Not generally associated with London except perhaps once
    15. Did not appear in a crime novel
    16. Written after 1980
    17. Was not a lead character in a movie
    18. Not an antagonist except to bad guy(s)

    1. No, I am not Neville Longbottom.
    2. No, I am not Lucius Malfoy.
    3. Hells yes, I am Remus John Lupin!

BRAVO!!!! What suddenly narrowed you down to the HP universe?

And now you see why this was so funny in your very first set of IQs:

Lupin is my favorite character in the HP books by far. To elaborate on my comment re: the action hero--that he accomplished something few others did--that refers to the fact that unassuming Remus was the only person to survive three big battles without so much as a scratch: the Battle of the Department of Mysteries (where he was the only dueler who wasn't hurt aside from Dumbledore and Harry), the Battle of the Astronimy Tower and the Battle of the Seven Potters. Lupin was hardcore and awesome but no one, especially the makers of the last three bloody movies, seemed to realize it. And I will never forgive Rowling for what she did to him in Book 7, especially since it was a last-minute decision. Damn her!

Erm, anyway, sorry, fangirling again. So congrats, CIAS. You're up!

    - TBH - from the comment about not being an unexpected action hero made me think of Neville Longbottom, but he survived the final fight. I then wondered given your comments about novels and films if it wasn't a harry potter one and had to check quickly to see if Lupin had died.

PS: Rowling has a lot to answer for for everything after Book 4 or 5. I can't even remember Book 7 at all. The Lego game is much better

Hmm, who to think of next.

All right, sorry to have left you boys alone to play with yourselves. Ummmmmm so to speak. It's been super busy for me.

    1. Are you the author of a famous family saga, filmed twice for the British television (and its original US showing basically created the audience for Masterpiece Theatre)?

    2. Did you hold so true to your morals that you would have rather gone back out into a storm than participate in light S&M and then fellatio with a bunch of nubile women?

    1. The only kicking might be done would be because I included half the title of the novel/serial in the question. John Galsworthy, author of The Forsyte Saga.

    2. Yes! He was entering the Castle Anthrax in search of the Grail, because naughty Zoot had lit up their beacon, which just happens to be grail-shaped. Arthur was nowhere near by, and it was Galahad who ended up needing to be "saved" from the "peril" of the young ladies from Launcelot.

    3. George Friedrich Handel, and the piece I was referring to was "Messiah" and in particular, the "Halleujah" chorus, the latter of which refers to the Passion and upcoming Resurrection -- and really, that's Easter's domain, not Christmas. (Says the Jewish chick.)

Note how generous I am in that all references are British? I want that noted.

Lancelot was "rescuing" Galahad from Castle Anthrax in MPATHG, as I remember; King Arthur wasn't there.

    IQs:

    1. Geordi LaForge. Tsk tsk tsk. His 'relationship' with the hologram of Leah Brahms, the engineer who worked on the Enterprise-D back at Utopia Planitia.

    2. Ha! I totally forgot about Peaches Geldof. Is it sad that there are enough people crazy enough to fit this particular clue? I'll rephrase.

    3. George Harrison helped back at least two of the Monty Python films (Life of Brian and Meaning of Life. And the Pythons were often called "The Beatles of Comedy." And rightly so

    DQs:

    1. Is prime female relationship one of father/daughter?

Reserved the final DQ for EH.

    New IQs:

    1. Are you a police commissioner in a faux-version of Manhattan whose superhero daughter was once paralyzed and subsequently photographed naked by a psycho while you were forced to watch?

    2. Did you ever play the guy above?

    3. Were you an egotistical superstar adventurer who, despite being a pretty obviously incompetent liar, was unaccountably hired for an incredibly vital position at a school, a decision that still makes me shake my head?

Only on occasion? Well done on all three! (Honestly, the rationale Rowling gave for Dumbledore hiring Lockhart was one of the most poorly-thought-out things in that damn series. At least pre-Book 7.)

Dang, I really really thought I was right on Gordon! The only thing--until the last DQ--that didn't fit was the "maybe American," but I thought there was something in his background that might imply he was from, I dunno, Canada or something. Ah well. We'll see where EH goes with this.

    Previous IQs:

Were you a prominent early pro wrestler who wasn't Verne Gagne? - Yes, Gorgeous George
Are you an Olympic athlete who injured his head while diving? - Yes, Greg Louganis
Have you played a rock star, a terrorist, a fugitive and a police officer? - Heh - this was also Gary Oldman, in Sid and Nancy, Air Force One, The Prisoner of Azkaban and the Nolan Batman movies.

Shall I ask a DQ, or another IQ?

Heh, I had a feeling that was Oldman in your question, EH. I wasn't sure, though, and I was only throwing the question in as an extra because I was so stupidly sure of Commissioner Gordon!

We only get 20 DQs, right? I think that means we're used up on DQs if you use yours. Do you have any clues here? My comic book knowledge is fairly minimal. I'm now curious to know if he's the main character of a supporting, but that probably should've been my last DQ instead of trying to elicit Babs Gordon. Bad strategy there.

    IQ:

    1. Did you give up the rat race of designing toys for cereal boxes in order to live off the land, raise your own food and be self-sufficient... in the suburbs?

    2. Were you ever a superhero's sidekick with your own kinda goofy nickname, then became a superhero in your own right under a much cooler but related moniker while someone else got stuck with your old job, and then took on the original superhero's identity for a little while?

    3. Are you someone who, in addition to being a trifle jewelry-obsessed, seems to have an inordinate amount of difficulty figuring out the difference between singular and plural nouns?

YES! I don't know why I thought of Gordon before Grayson. I guess it was the law enforcement officer thing that threw me. But you accurately said "some kind of LEO" so a superhero's boy sidekick counts.

The answers to my other IQs were Tom Good, of "The Good Life" (which I hope you know), and Gollum.

If EH would like, I'd be honored if he'd take my role as Chooser for me.

    And we're off!

    1. Um. No, I am not Bismarck? Or was he just zeppelins? (This will teach me to get my history from somewhere else but Monty Python.)

    2. LOL, Nope, not Bottecelli. But that would be a good one to pick!

    3. No, I am not Bob Cratchit.

Thank you for easing my way in. Now EH will hit me with questions like "Are you the under-secretary of the interior under a president who was allergic to fava beans?" or "Are you one of the members of a gang who attempted a bloodless coup in the country formerly known as Spanish Guinea?"

    Hmm.

    1. No I am not Butch Cassidy? I hope so because he's the only bandit I can think of with a "B" name.
    2. STUMPED. Probably a famous sci-fi writer but I can't think fo any with a B.
    3. Probably STUMPED, but no, I am not Leonid Brezhnev? (I don't think his assassination attempt was fake, though...)

    IQs:

    1. Um longshot but I seem to remember Bob Dole in a commercial with a certain pop star, although I don't remember if her famous dog was part of it. But no, I am not Bob Dole, maybe?

    2. Assuming the above is right, I am not Britney Spears?

    3. No, I am not Thomas Becket? What a WEIRD coincidence because I was just yesterday talking to my sister about the whole Gov. Christie thing and saying how unlikely it would be that there's a paper or email trail; I suspected he probably said something like "Who will rid me of this turbulet mayor?" and his underlings took it from there.

Oh crap, I see I should have included a "Game of Thrones" reference in my sample EH questions. How could I forget?!! I will never get the better of you until I read these damn books.

    1. No, I am not Babe Paley, which I know only because I researched William S. Paley when I was a fundraiser for the New York Philharmonic.

    2. Everyone in Westeros can bite me. No, I am not.... ugh, all I know is one of the families is something like Bartheron. Is that it? No I am not someone Bartheron? Ugh. STUMPED probably.

    3. Yay!!! No, I am not John Wilkes Booth. Why is it only the oldest references that I can get? And how come I only just now noticed that "Wilkes" is the same last name Margaret Mitchell used for Ashley Wilkes, who represented the glory and romance of the old South? I wonder if there was any dog whistling going on there, or if it was totally subconscious.

You get at least 1 DQ unless you count my stab in the dark about the Game of Freakin' Thrones question.

It's Robert of House Baratheon, but you're close enough. The other two are correct. Hmm - very good. Maybe I'll have to resort to my Under-Secretary of the Interior questions after all...?

    IQs:

Were you born in London but spent time in your childhood in Cleveland?

Holy cow, wow, I didn't expect that GoT thing to be correct! Wow. Cultural osmosis for the win!

    1. STUMPED because gosh it could be anyone! I dunno, Richard Burton? LOL, no. He's Welsh anyway.
    2. No, I am not Kenneth Branagh, yum.
    3. I have no idea if he was in this film but I so want this to be.... No, I am not Brian Blessed?

(Relatively recent... hate to break it to you but that was, like, 20 years ago! SCARY!!!)
