    M.

    1. Male
    2. Real
    3. Last name starts with M
    4. American
    5. Alive
    6. No, I wouldn't say best known for the performing arts
    7. Born east of the Mississippi River
    8. Not best known for politics/military
    9. Not best known for the arts generally
    10. Not born since 1964
    11. Not involved in business
    12. Not involved in sport. Or sports, as we call 'em in the good ol' US of A.
    13. Not a scientist
    14. Not married currently (well... at least not officially)
    15. Not a TV personality of some kind, although I daresay he's been on TV multiple times
    16. Not gay
    17. Not a journalist
    18. No, not a top award-winner in his field; not entirely sure there is any such prize... though if there were, he'd be a contender, methinks
    19. Not involved in computers--certainly not to a degree that he'd be known for it
    20. Does not hold an advanced degree
    21. Mmm, no, not best known for a single incident

    Still stumped. I give up.

Would it help if I mentioned that there's a reason I find CIAS's smilie both amusing and appropriate?

Or that if the single work of the performing arts with which this person is most associated (but which he did not create himself) was a biographical piece about him, we could fairly say that while he might be adept in sexual activities, he is certainly not blessed with skill in the Terpsichorean art?

Or that what would surprise many people who aren't all that familiar with the particulars of the things for which he is most famous, the irony is that he, personally, did not actively participate in them?

Hmm, a possible (ex-)jailbird who may be great at sex, but can't dance for toffee.

If it wasn't for that last DQ, the only other person I could think of is Charles Manson, but he is easily best known for the Sharon Tate Murder and the associated furore. Also, although I don't know of any, it wouldn't surprise me if there had been multiple biographies about him,

EH is Manson better known for things other than those murders? Any other ideas of who it might be?

Bingo. The Tate - LaBianca murders, each of which took place on multiple nights, involved seven deaths; there were also other killings elsewhere at different times, for which he was also convicted, and he is known for being a cult leader and his, um, unique racial views. (And for the fact that he personally never actually killed any of the people for whom he was convicted of murdering.) Thus, I don't consider him known for only a single incident.

So yes, it is Charles Manson.

Regarding my clue about sex and dancing, that was a reference to the Beatles' song Helter Skelter, which Manson erroneously believed was sending him a message about a coming race war (God knows why, there's literally nothing in it to justify his crackpot theory). If it were biographical, Paul would be singing these words about Manson:

Tell me tell me tell me,
Come on, tell me the answer.
Well you may be a lover but you ain't no dancer.

(You may notice I also included a reference to it in #1946, re: "tell me the answer." )

Well crumbs - he seemed to fit several of the points, but I only know him for the single incident, so I wasn't sure, but it was really the comment on the smilie that gave the biggest hint.

Time to think of someone new.

Ummmm guys? When did we change from G to M? At first I thought it was an EH hiccup, but now CIAS is guessing "M" folks too. Help? It seems that George Marshall was the tipping point where we swapped letters...

My answers focused on "G" names, FWIW. Knowing that, do you want to try again, CIAS?

As an aside: y'know, for a ring that was supposedly All-Powerful and All-Consuming, a helluva lot of people managed to withstand its allure (Gandalf, Galadriel, Faramir, Sam...) For all the grief Jackson gets for having Faramir briefly tempted, I think Jackson's decision made it more impressive that Samwise was the only one in the films who was utterly beyond the grasp of the Ring. So nyeah, purists!

And as another aside... there are multiple autistic author/veterinarians out there?

Answers to my IQs: I couldn't find a reference to Art Garfunkel plagiarizing anything (Paul Simon, OTOH...), so I'll have to count that against you. The correct responses were:

    1) George Harrison (and you were so close with Paul!) -- the "My Sweet Lord" / "He's So Fine" lawsuit, which Harrison lost.
    2) Jackie Gleason, whose "Ralph Kramden" was directly taken for Fred Flintstone (as were all the other Honeymooners characters).
    3) Jean Genet, author of The Maids among others, who was a thief and male prostitute before he found his proper métier.

    New IQs:

    1) Did you take over the role of a major film character when your greatly admired predecessor died, and eventually become just as well-loved (if not more so) than the original?

    2) Were your adoptive grandfather, father, brother, and son all world leaders--and you probably would have been as well (or perhaps instead, in at least one case), had you lived?

    3) Is one of your most often-quoted witty rejoinders simply: "You will, ___, you will."

    DQs:

I'll steal a couple of the EH questions.

    1. Living?
    2. European?
    3. Involved in the arts?

Yes indeedy, Michael Gambon! But I completely screwed up the last two questions so I'll take no points. #2 was Germanicus, but I got one of the relationships wrong--he was the grandson (by marriage) to Augustus, but Tiberius's nephew, not son. He was also Claudius's brother and the dad of Caligula. And like an idiot I thought the "You will, Oscar, you will" was George Bernard Shaw, but of course it was James McNeill Whistler. So, I suck.

    3. A notorious iconoclast of a politician, did you once call a highly-placed leader (who shared your name) a 'wolf,' and then take it back, because doing so 'defamed wolves'?

I can forgive you missing the Civil War reference, since I was doing my EH impression (except this guy isn't, like, some abstruse reference to a 2nd lieutenant whose leg was shot off in some minor battle ). But 1 and 3! Tsk tsk tsk.

#1 was George Martin, who worked on Peter Sellers & (I think) Beyond the Fringe albums before being asked to produce The Beatles's recordings. He wasn't impressed and planned on passing until he actually met and spoke w/them, at which point their sense of humor and intelligence clinched the deal. #2 was George McClellan, General in Chief of the Union Army, who kept making wimpy decisions (unnecessarily retreating multiple times) that resulted in either failures to take full advantage of the South's weaknesses or outright losing ground to the Rebels. And #3 is George Galloway, MP and agitator. After the Iraq invasion he made the wolf comment about George W. Bush.

I'll just take one DQ for now, pending the answers to EH's.

    - Born north of the Mason-Dixon line?

    3. Despite your not being a singer, did no less a musical genius than Stephen Sondheim write his most famous song with you in mind, making sure the song actually took advantage of your vocal weaknesses?

Bush.

    New IQs:

    1. Are you a multiple-gold-medal Olympic athlete who bravely (but controversially) revealed that you were HIV positive only after an accident that spilled some of your blood--albeit in a place that made it 99.9999999% no risk to others?

    2. Were you (at the time) the oldest person ever nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, although your role largely consisted of a few reminisces before you dropped some jewelry and then croaked?

Well well, I never knew that about George Martin, and George Galloway is someone you just don't give airtime to or consider. The less thought about him the better.

    1. I should probably know this, but cannot remember who.
    2. Why does this sound like the old lady from Titanic whose name I cannot remember.

True, if you're in the midst of a sugar high, you're not responsible for your actions, much less knowing someone obscure like George Martin. (At least it wasn't the other George Martin, i.e. the only writer slower than myself, who it grieves me to say is the first person who turns up on my search results for "George Martin." I weep for pop culture.)

Answers: #1 is Olympic diver Greg Louganis. #2 is indeed Gloria Stuart from Titanic. Thank heavens she didn't win. Not that I begrudge a biddy her award, but she just wasn't that great, aside from being old, IMHO. #3 was Glynis Johns, whom you might also know from Mary Poppins (she played the suffragette Mrs. Banks); 'twas for her that Sondheim wrote "Send in the Clowns," and his knowledge of her deficiencies is why the song requires very little vocal range, and the lines are all quite short (which was helpful for someone like Johns, who didn't have enough breath support to sing a long sustained melodic line--so it's easy to take breaths after phrases like "Isn't it rich?" "Are we a pair?" "Me, here at last on the ground," "You in mid-air..." and so on). But he knew she'd hit it out of the ballpark, emotionally, as )

Judi Dench is good in anything... and I'm not just saying that because my dad dated her in the late Fifties.

EH ... seriously?? Are your parents (or at least your dad) from the UK? Gosh I don't know if it's too personal to ask how they knew each other, but I sure do wanna ask it.

CIAS, you're not gonna be pleased about missing #1, who is Gary Oldham (referring to his roles as Dracula, Commissioner Gordon, and Sirius Black, respectively). #3 is George Eliot, of Middlemarch, Silas Marner, Daniel Deronda, and Mill on the Floss fame.

(But well played on the Bill Gates answer, heh.)

Arrgh. The problem with my DQs is that EH trumps me on asking the good ones, so I don't want to waste a question by asking "involved in sports?" if it turns out he's involved in the cinema, for example.

    DQs:

    - Married to anyone famous?
    - Born after 1939?

    IQs:

    - Did you 'borrow' one of your most iconic images (perhaps the iconic image for the group that first brought you fame) from a painting of Cupid?

    - While John Lennon may have said his group was 'bigger than Jesus,' were you a rock band's lead singer who actually was Jesus in a manner of speaking?

    - Despite having a career that put you squarely in the public eye, is the phrase for which you're most remembered related to your desire for solitude?

Both of my parents are Americans. My dad, who at that point had not yet met my mom, was a soldier on leave from the U.S. Army in the north of England in the late 1950s, saw Dench in a local play, was smitten and asked her out. They dated for a few weeks. Years later, after Dench rose to fame, my mom wrote to ask if she remembered my father Jack. Dame Judi wrote back at once to say, "Of course I remember Jack! I'll be performing in New York City in a few months. Here are some tickets; please come see the play and visit me in my dressing room afterwards." So they did! I wrote to her myself after she was diagnosed with macular degeneration a year or so ago, and got a very nice note back. Now, when I see her as M in the James Bond movies with my sons, I say, "See her? That could've been your grandmother!"

    Previous IQs:

Are you a noted living Civil War historian with the initials G.G.? - Gary Gallagher
Were you Ted Baxter's girlfriend? - Georgette, on The Mary Tyler Moore Show

What DQs should we ask? We're getting towards the end here, choie.

Edited to add: Dang he even ninjas me the one time I finally think I'm getting the drop on him! At least this time I get to ask some decent DQs. Anyway that's an extremely cool story, EH, and how lovely that your parents and she were able to catch up together--and the same for you and her.

Okaaay, I think I might have a shot at this one.

    First, the IQ answers:

#1 was Terry Gilliam, who used this to create this. #2 was Ian Gillan, lead singer of Deep Purple (biggest song "Smoke on the Water"), who brilliantly sang/performed the role of Jesus in the original concept album (and best version) of Jesus Christ Superstar.

    DQs:

    - Are you best known for television?
    - Born west of the Mississippi?

    IQs:

    1) Did you once play the musical icon mourned in the song "American Pie"?

    2) Was your nearly-damaged virtue the prime reason that your older brother acted like an ass to the man who tried to ruin you--someone who otherwise seemed so very amiable that he charmed all of Longbourn?

    3) Might a medical professional be concerned that your most famous creations seem to suffer from utter inability to age, dental issues (primarily rather serious overbites) and jaundice-like coloring?

Ooh I just realized I forgot to give the answers to my other questions, FWIW: Gary Busey played Buddy Holly, and the girl whose reputation was protected by her brother was Georgianna Darcy, from Pride and Prejudice, who ran away when she was only 15 with cad George Wickham.

No clue on #1, but on #2 and #3 I'll say that I'm neither Adam Clayton Powell, nor.... urgh I'm not entirely sure if this is the right name since I wasn't a Battlestar Galactica fan, but was it Captain or General or Major... Adama? Adamo? Something like that.
