Default Why are all bodybuilders so very permatanned?

I have yet to see a top level bodybuilder who isn't a shade of teak or mahagony?

    Why do they do it?

Does it show of the musculature better than being a paler colour, or is it one of those ideals that they just have to be heavily, heavily, spray painted tanned.

Shows the musculature better, especially once they're all oiled up for display.

OK?!?! I have followed this "sport," at least peripherally, for two decades. First, I knew someone who was into bodybuilding, and then later, I worked for a company that sponsored many of the top contenders, and had to read their testimonials in the break room. And while I understand the underlying interest in the sport, I have a hard time appreciating someone who looks like a da Vinci anatomical drawing...draped in Naugahyde. WTF.

My cousin once dated a bodybuilder. He was on the short side and had a very slight frame, but he still did his best to bulk up. In a way, it actually made it worse. He had all the ripples and bulges and veiny protrusions of any other body builder, but there wasn't much mass behind it.

He shaved his entire body, oiled up and fake tanned so that it would enhance the shadows and make those various protrusions look more dramatic. Too dark and everything disappears together into shadow, but too pale and the shadows don't show up well enough. That unnatural color was settled on as the one that makes them look the most deformed.
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.
