I took your move as "Kf2", moving it from g1 not f1 - but your King cannot move to f2.

I don't understand. Sorry. You said my King couldn't make that move. Maybe you'd better update the board?

Your King is on g2 but cannot legally capture on h2 (hence "You may not") - whatever unit has occupied h2 is protected by another Black unit, type and location unknown, and the rules of Kriegspiel forbid self-check and warn you if you try to commit it. Meanwhile your Rook cannot move to h2 because your King is in the way. I can update the board for you, but not now (wrong computer).

Here you are. I am showing a Black Rook on h2 because a capture has just taken place there and you are in check along the rank, and no possible capture on h2 could have exposed you to discovered check from your other side in the same move; hence, the unit on h2 must be checking you. The unit is not guaranteed to be a Rook but you can be checked on the rank only by a Rook or a Queen - you may be able to think of a move that would offer evidence that the unit is or is not a Queen, or you may not care.

Not shown is the unit that is protecting the "Rook". There are enough possibilities that I cannot give any further information.

By "in check along the rank," do you mean along the second row from D2 through H2? If so:

    King, G2 to F1.

Yes, that's what it means. Sorry, as a chessplayer I'm not only used to "rank" and "file" but assume anyone else who can play chess is as well.

King f1 to e1 is not valid, per the game thread (had there been an unguarded Rook or Queen there, it would have been). Remember, any move you attempt that does not get you out of check is rejected, but without any penalty to you.

You are in check along the rank - an enemy Rook or Queen is on the back line with your King. Rook to g2 cannot possibly influence this.

"e3 to d1" understood. This does not stop the check (it could be invalid if it exposed you to a second check at the same time as stopping the first, but that is impossible since the Knight's position is such that moving it cannot open a line against your King). Response in thread since your opponent is entitled to know you have attempted an illegal move, NTTAWWT.

Then I don't understand. Is it checkmate? If my king is in check and neither my knight nor my rook can kill the attacking piece or block it, and both the first and second rows are "under fire," is that not checkmate?

You do not know that the second rank is under fire this turn, only that it was last turn; nor do you know that the King cannot take on e1 or g1; all you do know is that you have at least one legal move, or I would have announced checkmate. (Gamepad, which I'm recording this game on, would have told me even if for some odd reason I'd not noticed that it was checkmate.)

No I'm not. This move too is illegal, which means you have now established that you are not being checked by an unprotected piece on g1 or e1, nor any kind of piece on a1 thru d1; but you are not checkmated. I'll leave it to you to draw whatever conclusions you can and add that the obvious implication is that at least one move of your King to the second rank is legal.

From the previous diagram, put your King at f1 and remove the Black Rook, which is not necessarily still at h2.
