Default The Barsooms (John Carter of Mars) books

A recent article in the New Yorker about the upcoming movie version of "John Carter of Mars" got be interested in this character and the "Barsoom" books.

I've never read them. I assume they're swashbuckling old school fun. Is that the case? Any fans?

Would they be good reading for my ten year old?

They were fun to read as a kid. I believe 10 is a fair age to read them. They aren't great but the first few are fun. About on par with Conan actually.
