Default computer turning itself off and on

My home desktop has suddenly started turning itself off and on.

    Any theories?

This is going to cost me a lot of money, isn't it?

Interesting. Both my husband and I have a problem with our Mac laptops: we choose "shut down" and the damn things restart instead. The first few times this happened, I thought I had selected "restart" instead of "shut down", since they are next to each other on the menu. But now I am very careful to choose the correct one, and it STILL happens quite often.

I think the computers are just flexing their muscles in preparation for taking over the universe. I hope they let us live.

There's only one possible explanation: demon possession.

Better set it on fire, just to be sure.

Last time I saw this the power cable was loosely in. A nudge on the cable or the PC and off it went. When I moved in reaction to it, it pushed the cable in just enough and turned on again.

Hmm...given the location of my PC, I don't think it can be getting nudged like that. Worth checking, though, thanks.

    Just got this at work:

    Hi Honey,

I am sending this email from the downstairs computer. [Computer dude] could come today. The computer's power source needed to be replaced, but everything else is okay. He also cleaned the inside of the computer.
    Whew.

Yeah, that's what I thought, in the same ball park. I also liked your matter of fact "Last time I saw this", which gave me heart that this might not be a huge deal. Thanks.

    Sigh...

    Now it's doing
USB Over Current Status Detected, Computer will shut down in 15 seconds !!!"
Any idea about this? Is it connected to what was happening before? (Would seem quite the coincidence if it isn't)

    Thanks for any ideas.

Yeah, it sounds like your engineer is looking for more work.

Well not quite, but at a guess it will be related to the new power supply probably supplying more current than the USB devices are capable of having. It's not an error I have seen before, but "BY THE POWER OF GOOGLE", it appears that it is not uncommon.

Huh, yeah, that does make sense, doesn't it -- "She swallowed the spider to capture the fly...."

And yeah, I googled it too, and it does seem common....but not something that I can fix with a screwdriver and a ballpeen hammer...sigh...

Well, it turns out one of the USB ports was slightly damaged, and causing shorts. He disable the port, and things are OK now.

He didn't take any payment for fixing it, though, which makes me wonder if that wasn't the origin of the problem all along, and he'd missed it.

Anyway, touching wood, and thanks for your thoughts.
