Onsott nods, his whole demeanour becoming visibly more relaxed.

Dr. T'Var takes another sip of her brandy. She is enjoying the drink and this game.

    T'Var castles King's side. (0-0)

Rather than peering over the shoulders of the players and disturbing them, ship's cook Johnson sets up a display on a seperate table for kibbitzers to follow and hoping he hasn't missed a move.

In the land of the blind, the one-arm man is king.

Vaudreuil glances over at Johnson, smiles, and returns his attention to T'Var's and Delaney's game.

Thanks, CIAS! Hope it won't be too much trouble to keep that updated.

Onsott blinks as he observes Delaney attempting to cheat. Knights don't move that way!

Delaney is black. His queenside knight (b8) can indeed move to c6. Did you think he was playing white?

I fixed my move, Malacandra was correct. I had mistyped b6 instead of c6

    Absently, Onsott notes the moves to date: 1. e4, e5; 2. Nf3, d6; 3. d4, Bg4; 4. dxe5, dxe5; 5. Qxd8+, Kxd8; 6. Nxe5, Be6; 7. Bc4, Bxc4; 8. Nxc4, f6; 9. e5, b5; 10. Ne3, fxe5; 11. 0-0, Nc6; and awaits White's next.

For one moment, Johnson frowned as it appeared the display was on the fritz but it sorted itself out after a little while.

I have a desktop chess app that prints out to BMP, and its easy enough to convert to GIF.

Of course, you could have fixed it in-character and so not have made a nonsense of my comment...

Although equal in pieces, Johnson wonders how much unbalanced the remaining positions are for each side.

"A most interesting move, Mr. Delaney," Dr. T'Var says.

T'Var finishes the Saurian Brandy while considering her next move -- and whether or not to have another brandy.

    Onsott makes a few annotations as he updates the move list (1. e4, e5; 2. Nf3, d6; 3. d4, Bg4; 4. dxe5, dxe5; 5. Qxd8+, Kxd8; 6. Nxe5, Be6; 7. Bc4, Bxc4; 8. Nxc4, f6; 9. e5, b5; 10. Ne3, fxe5; 11. 0-0, Nc6; 12. Rd1+, Kc8; 13. c3, Bc5; 14. b4, Bxe3;) but does not share them with his fellow spectators, although a smile crosses his face as he thinks of his schooldays when kibitzing was a highly advanced art form sometime summarised by the apothegm "There are only two players using this board; let's have a game".

Dr. T'Var scans the current board position, mulling over her next move. She then moves her pawn to f3. (f3)

Onsott's attention appears to be wandering, possibly in the direction of a hot yeoman who has just entered the Rec Room.

Yeoman Bridget O'Shea is indeed a looker. The Irishwoman is tall and shapely, with her lustrous red hair arranged in a tall beehive 'do. Lt. Vaudreuil finds himself slightly distracted from the game, just as Onsott is.

Dr. T'Var is slightly distracted and a bit amused -- as amused as a Vulcan can be, of course -- by what's happening around her. She quickly returns her attention to the chessboard and then makes her next move.

As if caught between the devil and the deep, Onsott rises from his seat and makes a determined effort at the ship's record for the hundred-metre nonchalant walk as he exits the rec-room.

Johnson watches Onsott sauntering out while keeping an eye on the game and at this point wishing he had bought some popcorn along, although eating it would, no doubt, disturb the two players.

Lt. Vaudreuil is feeling a little hungry, too, although he's not sure for what. Almost certainly not popcorn.

Dr. T'Var hopes no one has noticed her stomach growling. Perhaps drinking a glass of Saurian Brandy on an empty one was not the most wise thing to do while playing a challenging game of chess with Mr. Delaney. T'Var sighs.

"If anyone is getting themselves a snack, I would like one as well," she says to nobody in particular.

T'Var then takes her Rook and captures Black's Knight. (Rxd5)

Onsott returns after a quick freshen-up, peers at the board from a safe distance and blinks several times as he realizes Delaney has just dropped a piece for no obvious reason.

He sneaks a peek at Yeoman O'Shea but is disgruntled to note that he seems to have competition.

I can't answer that in character:

In summary I failed at visualizing the board. Never played this way before and I don't think I am suited to it.

ooc: You could register a free account at chess.com. One of their features is an "Analysis board", you can move the pieces around with a point-and-click interface. Otherwise I think you would need to keep the game set up on a travel set or similar.

If anyone wants to register on chess.com and challenge Gil-Gandel to an unrated game, I'll see you over there.

in-character reply for Delaney: "Sheer amaurosis scacchistica (chess blindness), Lieutenant. I was thinking three moves ahead instead of one!"
