Default A new Song of the Day

Since it's been a while since we did this, I figured I'd start it up again.

Today I'm putting up "Bloodstained Heart" by Darren Hayes. I've always enjoyed his vocals, but this song really surprised me. The guitar on this track is particularly nice, reminding me a little of Dave Keuning's style from the Killers. (As adorable/insane as Brandon Flowers might be, that man's lead guitar is still the best thing that band ever had going for it.)

And the video and concept behind the song... Ah, it gets me every time. You love someone and you want to save them from their own suffering, but there's only so much you can do.

So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.

This next one comes courtesy of hobbler's latest musical recommendation. It's "Lek Nauy Tee Ying Yai" ("Trivial, but Significant") from "Pang" Nakarin Kingsak. I've never spent a lot of time listening to music with non-English lyrics aside from some French and German, but this has been an enjoyable addition to my playlists.

So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.

Verbal gymnastics have always intrigued me, whether it is clever lyrics or fast paced rapping, so this one is worthy of a look.

Some people would say that scat singing is just a nonsense and should not be considered seriously at all.

Scatman John would beg to differ...

What I liked about this song was that Scatman John was also born with a severe stutter and this song was written to inspire those similarly afflicted.

This song was a huge hit in New Zealand in the early '70s when Shona Laing was only 17.

I woke up the other day with that playing in my head, couldn't think of the title but unusually enough remembered the singer (Barry Ryan).
As a teenager, that was a popular song and particularly in our crowd as there was one of the girls, spectacularly good looking, called Eloise, quite an unusual name at the time.
There were also to called Louise, also very, very attractive, one with an Italian mother, the other with an Italian father. Both fathers were solicitors, partners in the same company.

All three girls were killed in car accidents before they were 18.
One was rather spectacularly beheaded while a passenger in her boyfriends open top sports car. A tree had fallen by the side of the road and brought some electrical cables down across the road they were driving down, just at the wrong height for poor Louise.
The boyfriend survived but never really recovered.

Leading on from the sad songs thread I continued watching some Vanessa Paradis clips.
I had always liked "Joe Le Taxi" from first hearing it, probably down to the saxophones, I'm a sucker for saxophones, but the following version came as a very pleasant surprise:

    The original:

She still retains a lot of the child-like qualities, a very unspoiled individual despite all her success.I believe that she was 13 in the original video.

Didn't get that ? Perhaps you were referring to Tricky? I don't like Tricky one bit, but PJ is something else.

Perhaps you meant Mrs Depp? If so then:

Apparently, he doesn't think an Ontarian accent is good enough for folk music. He is a talented musician, but yeah, the fake "Oirish" is grating.

Don't they have folk in Ontario? I mean putting on the cod accent is kinda against the whole point of having folk music. Anyway, it's a crying shame.

Oh, there's tons of Canadian folk music. I'd assume the fake accent comes from the strangely common North American idea that accents from across the Atlantic are somehow more authentic or "charmingly old-fashioned" or something.

Brandon Flowers of the Killers did that to a degree with their first album, with faking an English accent in songs.

Yeah he was kinda tapping into the auld '80s British indie with his vocal accent on that record. The folk music of Newfoundland is very close to Irish folk and indeed some of the accents there aren't a million miles from accents you'd hear here but that kid needs to knock off the stage Irish and find his own voice.
