Default Eddie Murphy at the Oscars

Next years host is going to be Eddie Murphy instead of James Franco and Anne Hathaway. I'm not sure whether this is going to be a hit, or a trainwreck.

At least it wil be more interesting than last year.

Or is he going to try and copy Ricky Gervais and take them on a risque, near-knuckle ride and insult everyone.

I think it will probably be tame and disappointing. Eddie Murphy the edgy comic is about 20 years gone; Eddie Murphy the maker of family-friendly PG movies has replaced him.

I vote awkward and embarrassing train-wreck. Eddie Murphy hasn't done anything in a long while.

I'm really trying to figure out the reasoning behind this. Eddie Murphy hasn't been hip in years and his latest movies have bombed.

I can remember when the Oscars were hosted by reassuring squares like Bob Hope and Johnny Carson who knew how to handle a live performance, but I don't see Eddie Murphy being in the same league.

Exactly. The last funny thing he did was 15 years ago and he was wearing a variety of fatsuits, but if he tried that now, people would just assume he was Tyler Perry.

I'd have Jon Stewart back in a heartbeat. Steve Martin and Billy Crystal are also excellent. Can't say ol' Eddie has me jumping for glee.

What about ways to make it more interesting with him as the host.

Invite Mel B to a front row seat with a basket of rotten tomatoes?
Force him to do the entire show with a talking chipmunk?

I wonder if he will wear his fat suit?

Of course, if he takes the stage in his red leather suit from Raw, I'll instantly sit up in my seat and prepare for one of the most amazing nights of my TV-consuming life.

Is it just me, or has host the Oscars become pretty much a joke? Who was the last MC to actually get good reviews for it? I mean, I liked Jon Stewart, but I seem to recall that was not the consensus viewpoint.

Probably Billy Crystal was the last, but I thought Stewart was really good and should get another chance.
