Default Britain votes No to AV

A referendum was held yesterday to determine whether Britain should change its electoral system from the First Past the Post (FPTP) system to the Alternative Vote (AV) system.

By a margin of approx 70%-30%, AV has been rejected.

This is a good thing, although it will not stop the Yes2AV campaign saying that they just didn't get their message across, or it was about the personalities and not the voting system really and that if they ask again in a couple of years time and put forward a better message, of course Britain will accept the new system.

The people have spoken. Down with AV.

Excellent news. Makes me want to burst out singing "The Roast Beef of Old England".

Is there any way the question on the ballot could have been more neutrally phrased and not totally favor AV?

AV was a misconceived stunt from the start. It was a price of the coalition between the Tories and Libdems, and the LibDems got to fix it as best they could, picking the date and everything. At that point though, the Royal Wedding had not been announced.

A few months ago, the YestoAV campaign was polling 70%-30% for them and it was looking like a landslide towards change. Then the Tories pulled out the big guns and joined forces with half of the Opposition party, which tends not to get mentioned, to turn it around.

Its a voting system nobody wanted, the liberal left really want PR on the grounds they believe Britain has a liberal-left majority. They are still finding it hard to comprehend it may not be true.
