Default Last World War One veteran has died

Claude Choules, the last known combat veteran of World War One died today aged 110, and with his passing a last link to that war has gone.

Here's hoping that the sacrifices that he and others like him made are never forgotten.

Sounds like that Ole' Salt had a good and long life. Even the WWII & Korean War vets are becoming scarce these days. I'm impressed by a 40+ year career including both big wars.

The march of time keeps dragging that war further and further into faded memory, and now the veterans' living memory is gone. I knew eventually the last of them would die, but it still seems too soon, even at 110 years old.
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.

Wow, his kids were 84 and 76!

Thank you, Claude, for your long and faithful service to the Crown, your mates, and the cause of freedom. May you rest in peace.

It's kind of strange that this will be the first Rememberance Sunday this year without a survivor. The people we honour who fought have now all gone and all that is left is what was written down, though the reasons are still the same.

No more memories of those who were there, just what fragments people have gathered together. It will only be a few decades before the same will be said of World War II.

Let us hope we never forget.
