    Default Concern trolling

I've been told that you can't *accidentally* concern troll, but I've seen this term bandied around, and used as an accusation etc. I read the definition, but I guess I'd like an example. If not actual Mello/GB/Durp examples, then a hypothetical example would be great. Thanks.

    Concern trolling:

I just love this community so much and agree with all of you on everything, but...don't you think it would be better if we didn't ban people for posting goatse? We're stifling creativity here and this board just can't handle losing that.

I really want this community to thrive. This is why I think we should stop banning spammers and get rid of the so-called "human verification" system for joining the board. I am just so scared that if I say anything critical of the mods they will come and get me, though, and that's why I must use this sock.

It's a manipulative effort to cause drama in the board, while taking on the persona of someone who is worried and just trying to be "helpful".

I'm (relatively) new to cyberspace, and quite possibly a tad lacking in grey matter. I can't pick out the *concern troll* in that thread.

*I'm not acting dumb, or using irony tricks - I really don't get this.*

ETA: Zuul posted a split second before me. I get it now. The variants of troll seem pretty similar to me, I don't see much difference between each, and would just call all of them trolls. But now I get the distinction. Thanks.

Well, it is basically someone posting to cause problems by showing concern about Mod abuse while feigning fear the mean and horrible mods will apparently hunt him down and kick his dogs and break his plates.

I don't see how a concern troll would flourish here... Mello would have to have some of the most laid-back mods in cyberspace (excluding 'no holds barred' type sites).

They can't any more but they caused a lot of distress in the experiment known as DoMeBo. We allowed trolls to cause a lot of mischief. This was basically a different mod team though.

See, I'm angry about the fact that this kid is chokikng me so I want to spoil everyone else's fun too. Thats an important psych profile segment of a troll. The "If I can't have fun, then nobody else can either" syndrome.

And hey...thanks for trying to be helpful.

I can remember when the word 'troll' actually meant something. Now it's used so often, and as a weapon, it's almost meaningless.

Right. It's often just used for people you don't agree with, don't like - whatever.

It's also a Catch 22. If you respond to some idiot calling you a troll, and get into some pointless argument with them, now you are either letting yourself be trolled by them, or they will continue trying to smear you, by then accusing you of trolling, because you refuse to act like a troll.

I deliberately refuse to respond to anyone who tires to label me a troll, ignore them don't respond in any way, and they take THAT as trolling.

The very definition of a troll is somebody that seek attention, controversy and wants people riled up or something. But the new use of 'troll' means anyone who ignores an attempt at controversy is now also a troll.

    Which is just crazy.

What I hate is when people misuse the term Nazi.

It really weakens the insult. "Soup nazi?" "Grammar nazi?"

Really? Their soup or english usage oppress and commit genocide?

When people use the pejorative "nazi", they mean "fascist". And when they say fascist, they also mean "dick". Ergo, that man is not a nazi - he is a dick.

Let us use the correct slanders...

Yes! One should pick the correct term when attempting to harm another person they don't agree with.

The word "Nazi" itself is a slanderous term created to describe the German Political party at the time. It's the equivalent of "monkey face" and "slant eyes" used to describe the Japanese during WWII.

I would compare it to the N-word, but that would just cause trouble I don't need.

You might want to check your facts on that. Nazi had originally been used within Germany following the form of Sozi for members of the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands. After Hitler came into power, usage of Nazi declined, but it had not been created as a slur. The Reich Minister of Propaganda, Dr. Goebbels, used the term self-referentially in public speeches and writing.

It certainly can be used as a slur and is pretty offensive to be tossed at someone, but the Nationalsozialisten called themselves Nazis at least on occasion.

My issue is that the slur isn't as offensive as it used to be, because it's over-used!

Preserve the power and intensity of calling people Nazis. I want this attack to still make people pissed off in twenty years, we have to preserve its integrity. FOR THE CHILDREN.

...humor aside, Nazi was a descriptive, not a slur, when used against actual Nazis. Calling them "a fucking Nazi" was like them calling us "a fucking Capitalist". We do in fact utilize capitalism, while they do in fact practice Nazism. Nazi is the shorthand phrase for Nationalsozialismus, and is actually a proper phrase. Yes, it was still used as an attempt at a slur, but only because how we feel about Nazis. When we actually slurred the Nazis during World War II was when we called them Krauts. Which is us using the word Sauerkraut as a pejorative descriptive - they are definitively not pickled cabbage.

Nazi and Sozi are both derogatory terms! Like calling a Democrat a "crat", or a republican a "repug".

And I got the concern for the children thing, but I am ignoring it. OK I was ignoring it.

    Dagnabbit! Concern troll got me!

Well, it'd be like calling a Democrat a "Demmie" or a Republican a "Reppie" or "Repub", maybe. Because, yes, those who practice Communism are called "Commies".

But National Socialists did, rarely, call themselves Nazis, that's true. American soldiers definitely called Nazis "Nazis" for two reasons: one, informative (they were Nazis, after-all), and also, derogatory - because they look down on Nazis, calling them Nazis means more than "you're a National Socialist". So, fine, it's a bit of a slur as well as an informative descriptor.

But, uh, important point: who cares if you make Nazis feel bad?

I just don't want people to be called Nazis who aren't deserving of at least being called a fascist. Call those people dicks.

    How to concern troll

    Step One
Identify the local culture. Are they perhaps concerned with slanders?

Quote Originally posted by Ramses View post

Let us use the correct slanders...
    Step Two
Adopt the local concerns, but take them in an unexpected direction.

    Step Three
Hilarity ensues as the locals attempt to argue with you.

This demonstration is cracking me up, F-X.
