I just saw a similarly moving video: A New Spleen for Fluffy. Tear jerker.

Aw. What a good runner he is.

The heartwarming angle aside, I think it's pretty amazing a horse could so quickly adapt to and utilize a prosthetic leg. I'm not sure there are many humans in that situation who'd be running minutes after getting their first prosthetic.

I know, it's kind of astonishing, isn't it?

Humans are pretty stupid when it comes to running. Most foals are running around within 30 minutes to an hour after birth. How many human babies are doing that? Huh?

    I rest my case.

I kind of feel like a jerk, because my first thought after watching the video was "I wonder if he could mount a mare?" An animal with a problem like that shouldn't be bred, of course, but in cases where it's the result of an injury the fact that otherwise healthy studs could still cover mares would be a huge monetary incentive for further research.

It might be safer to collect from a horse like that and then A.I. A prosthetic like that might also be harder to design for a full-sized horse. A wee thing Midnight's size might weigh around 200 lbs, but a valuable racing stud could be well over 1000 lbs. And of course Midnight was also fortunate in that this was a hind leg. Horses only carry about 30% of their weight on their hind legs so, again, that probably helped this work for him.
