My husband just sent this to me. If anyone will actually try to make the stuff, it's him.

If this is really the recipe, I bet this stuff tastes awesome with real, whole ingredients.

No doubt. I'm thinking about how good homemade root beer tastes when it's made with real ingredients instead of flavor extract.

I need a good recipe for ginger beer. But a good root beer might be fun to make too. Can you share yours? Maybe a new thread if that is better.

Now called kola-nut extract. It's not too uncommon:

Oh yeah, ok, I've heard of that.

What is Neroli? And what kind of alcohol? And how do you carbonate the stuff?

I'm totally serious that Ted will probably want to try this. He actually suggested it in the e-mail he sent me.

Would someone at home really make 5 gallons of syrup though? That is a huge amount. This recipe does not break down well for small amounts. I mean "use 2 oz of flavor to 5 gals syrup". I guess it could be broken down to 1 gallon but even that is a huge amount of syrup. What is the ratio for mixing the soda itself?

    Neroli = Bitter orange.

Interesting, that's an ingredient in a lot of Cuban food.

Jim, I think my husband has a bottle at least 5 gallons big for his beer brewing, and then I guess you could bottle it in smaller bottles to keep on hand.

If we can figure out how to get all this stuff and do it, you're on.

Dang, not knowing the ratio of sugar may be a problem.

OK, this I can help with. Do you know the percentage of Syrup to actually Soda?
You can check the Nutritional list for Coke to determine the amount of sugar when mixed use the two values to determine what you need to make 1 gallon of syrup. (or 5 gallons)

Since I can get 2 litres of it for $1.50 in the store I think I'll stick with that.

OK, my husband says he has a CO2 tank and a 3-gallon keg (all of this for his beer brewing hobby), so if we can cut the recipe in half, we can make it and carbonate it in the keg.

Olive, he says let's plan a weekend to do it, but you may need to do some shopping for it.

Sarah, that recipe is for the syrup. The carbonation and water is a following step. That is why I was wondering who would attempt this. It is not for 5 gallons of Coke but 5 gallons of Coke syrup and I swear Coke is only about 1 tablespoon of syrup to maybe 12 oz based on something my Dad talked about decades ago.

That's what i thought, too, Jim. My husband thought no, because there's so much water in it. Either way, we decided we could still try it because he has a zillion bottles we can store the syrup in if need be.
