Default THE MOST SHOCKING MOMENT IN MUSIC

OK, so I was watching the final 10 countdown of THE MOST SHOCKING MOMENTS IN MUSIC HISTORY, which was on some cable channel. MTV? E? VH1? I don't know, one of them anyway.

What would your guess be for THE MOST SHOCKING MOMENT IN MUSIC HISTORY be? Altamont? The murder of John Lennon? The Who Concert in Cincinnati? Maybe even Elvis dying on his toilet?

I'm sure, whatever you guess, you'd be wrong. According to MTV/E!/VH1/whatever, THE MOST SHOCKING MOMENT IN MUSIC HISTORY, YOU PROBABLY REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE WHEN YOU HEARD THE NEWS was...

    The death of Michael Jackson.

    Also in the top 10:

Ozzy biting the head off a dove
Brittany shaving her head (I'm not kidding)
OK, and the murder of John Lennon and the Great White nightclub fire and Marvin Gaye getting offed by his own dad were all on there, too. But still...Michael Jackson killing himself with pills? This is THE MOST SHOCKING MOMENT IN MUSIC HISTORY? WTF?

I'd say Michael Jackson's death was more of a "oh, it finally happened" than a "SHOCK!!!" That wouldn't even make the top 100 list for me.
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.

Yeah, that's what I was saying to my husband...to be SHOCKING, it would have to be something you wouldn't expect. Like, even Kurt Cobain's death, as sad as that was, wasn't like out of the blue or anything. And Michael Jackson...since when would anything about him shock someone?

I'm having a very, very hard time imagining anything he could have done that would have actually shocked me. Maybe giving away all of his money, shaving his head and becoming a Buddhist monk.

Yeah, I thought that would be #1...it was actually #2. To be shocking, it really has to be something unexpected, and that was pretty friggin' unexpected.

A man and woman have sex. Gradually, the woman's belly expands. Suddenly, she goes into labor and has a kid. That is STILL MORE SHOCKING than Michael Jackson dying of an OD.
So, I'll whisper in the dark, hoping you'll hear me.

    This!

(And I hate when people post this or +1 but good lord, John Lennon was assassinated by a crazed fan and was actually a little more than just a trainwreck pop-star.)

    THE MOST SHOCKING?

    Jebus.

People starting to play the glass armonica again, now that's shocking: It's an instrument that got the reputation of driving its players insane!

People accepting the Saxophone as a standard musical instrument - that seems shocking too.

The Great Folk Revival in the sixties. (Or the Great Folk Scare, as the case may be.) That was shocking with how mainstream it went. For that matter, I think it shocked a lot of people (not just myself) when MTV started supporting artists doing "unplugged" works.

Hell's bells, the whole British Invasion was shocking.

I will grant Lennon's death as being shocking. So would I categorize Jim Croce's death. Glenn Miller's disappearance and presumed death was shocking, too - even though it's abstractly recognized that travel in and around a war zone isn't exactly what one would call 'safe.'

Michael Jackson's death and Elvis' before him, just saddening.

Bing sining Little Drummer Boy with Bowie was freaky.

David Byrne being interview by Johnny Carson felt like culture clash.

    Devo covering Satisfaction was crazy.

It's weird, but I really love that cover. It adds this whole new depth to the song. In case anyone has never had the pleasure, .

Right now I can't think of a single thing that I would describe as shocking in relation to music.

That up there would be why the Bieb is so freakin' popular. He's part of that phenomenon where lots of young girls crush on "girly" boys because they're less threatening, or whatever (I crushed on "girly" boys too, but I also crushed on girls, so there's that).

There's also the fact that lesbians love them some Bieber, if only because he looks like a baby-dyke.

It's true. He looks enough like a hot young butch that it's kind of freaky. The floppy hair and gently masculine face with an undeveloped body just makes for some cognitive dissonance.

Lesbians Who Look Like Justin Bieber doesn't help, as sometimes they show pictures of lesbians but sometimes it really is the Bieb.

I was actually more shocked how Michael Jackson was treated after his death. Alive, he was generally regarded as seriously disturbed and weird, and fodder for pedophile jokes; dead, he's become this adored musical figure.

(I never thought his music was that great...)

Was Mozart's death on there? That was a real loss to music.

I'm not shockable, so it's always hard for me to judge those lists. Let me guess: everything listed took place within the past few decades.

Was Wendy O. Williams on there? Not many women shoot themselves. (Though my Aunt Joan did.)

Yeah, Baldwin, in "greatest song" countdowns, it always seems loaded towards the last decade, doesn't it?

Artifex: I've been kinda weirded out by that, too. I'm like...people, this is the same guy with the little boys and the chimpanzee and the disappearing nose cartilage, etc. etc., right?

Definitely a loss, but I wonder how much of a shock it was. It's not like he was known for his clean living.

When did Wendy O. die? I thought she just faded away with the 80s. How odd.

More on point, it was after a protracted illness - and he'd been sickly much of his life.

What's wrong with you people? Not one person has mentioned what I thought would be number one. Dimebag Darrel's assassination on stage and the cops killing the shooter. If the murder of the lead guitarist on stage right in front of the crowd isn't shocking I don't know what is.

    Also welcome back Baldwin.

The lead singer out of Morphine also dropped dead of a heart attack on stage.

Not a good video. Dimebag was the lead guitarist for Pantera and later Damage Plan. As to the why nobody knows.
