Default Total Recall now starring Colin Farell

I hadn't realised this was due for a remake so to find that Colin Farrell will be covering Arnold Schwarzenegger's role was a surprise. Apparently they are going to be closer to the original book than the film was, but I'm wondering who they will get to play the other roles.

It's a shame really because, despite the really laughable although at the time cutting edge special effects, it was still a really good movie. It also gave us Sharon Stone as an assassin, some wonderful corny lines and Ronny Cox and Michael Ironside as a great pair of bad guys.

Did anyone ever say what the canon ending was: dream or reality?

Verhoeven was very purposeful about pushing that ambiguity and never did give an answer about the ending, which is one of the things I always liked about it. Of course, the geek fights about whether or not this particular phrase or that particular shadow pushed that ambiguity one way or another were always entertaining. Interestingly, Verhoeven felt like the various characters foreshadowing things that would soon happen to Quaid made it most likely to have been a dream. On the other hand, Schwarzenegger viewed those foreshadowing events as vague as psychic readings and meant to mislead Quaid and make him question himself. If they really knew what was going to happen, why didn't they say it directly? Obviously, they didn't know and just wanted Quaid uncertain. I'm kind of amazed the more thoughtful and realistic answer on that topic came from Schwarzenegger instead of the director.

Weirdly, there is a novelization of the movie that has nothing to do with Philip K. Dick's novelette. It was written by Piers Anthony and unambiguously ends with Quaid's experiences as reality.

With how different Dick's version is from how they made the movie, I'd be really curious to see how they're going to do this if it's not a straight remake of the first adaptation. This is a case where another adaptation could really add something.
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.

I saw the original, but I must not have liked it much, as it didn't leave an impression in my brain. Maybe I'll like the new one better. (Although I have little use for Colin Farrell, so ... probably not.)

Can't stand Blade Runner either. Or Minority Report. I probably just don't like movies-loosely-based-on-Philip-K.-Dick-books.

Will Ferrell in a Total Recall remake would be very strange indeed.
