Is it as in crowded or something else?
Is it as in crowded or something else?
Per Wikipedia - the origin is that it was an awful transportation day (apparently first commented upon in Philadelphia) with massive traffic headaches for police and transportation workers.
The alternative meaning, and the one that more people think of these days, is that since this is the day that starts the Christmas shopping season, and the busiest day of the year for many businesses, it's the day when a business' accounting sheets for the year go from being in the red to being in the black.
So the short answer is: It's the crowding or it's something else.

Always believed the black in, "we're in the black" thing.

I've also heard that it's a day that many stores "black out" on their request off calendar, so that everyone has to be available to work.
So, I'll whisper in the dark, hoping you'll hear me.
My racist grandfather has an alternative explanation, but I don't think it's accurate.
