    Default BtVS: Reboot is Whedon-less

That's right, Warner Brothers are going to reboot the whole Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise with a new movie update and it is going to have nothing to do with Joss Whedon.

Do they seriously think this will work?

Are their brains really made of cottage cheese, that they are going to fuck up one of the most popular TV Series over the past 15 years, which has become fully part of mainstream culture and spawned an entire empire.

Yes, the last couple of seasons were not great and Sarah Michelle Gellar deserves to be tarred and feathered for the way she left, but seriously, no fan is going to touch it.

It's not like Transformers, where the gap is 25 years and you can just about get away with aiming at a completely new audience.

    WB, you are morons.

Actually, its exactly like Transformers, Michael Bay, you bastard

Don't they remember the fiasco that was the original BtVS movie? It was based on Joss Whedon's script, but because the director had no clue what the script was going for, the final product was jagged, spotty, and disjointed. (I've seen some interviews with Fran Rubel Kuzui where she as much as said just that.)

The script was still good enough to make the movie enjoyable for some people (like me and my Navy movie buddies of the time), but the fans of the series really, really hate the movie, in part because the tone is so different from what Joss could do with the TV series. Even without the contrast with the series, the movie did rather poorly and seems, in retrospect, to have been more welcomed by the camp fans than by the comedy or serious horror fans. And camp fans may get one a cult following, but they really don't have enough purchasing power, on their own, to make for a big hit movie.

And this was without the expections that the BtVS fans will have for a new movie in the franchise.

Having said that, there's a voice in the back of my head asking, "And would you have expected the Star Trek reboot to succeed?" I've been wrong before.

But it still seems like a poor decision, and a risky one.

When I am god-king of Hollywood, I will declare a 5 year moratorium on all reboots, remakes and sequels.

This seems like a dumb idea. But maybe that's just because I feel old now.

I stopped watching Buffy in the 3rd season when it seem to ramp up the wangst. I enjoyed the movie by the way which is the only reason I tried out the silly sounding show in the first place.

I have no clue what to expect from the movie but some work and some don't. Star Trek The Motion Picture did not work but boy did Wrath of Khan and III was good and IV was great and the Reboot worked. Addams Family worked, Brady Bunch was surprisingly decent and I hated the show. Beverly Hillbillies was the stinker I expected and Wild Wild West was Really Really disappointing. Then Bewitch showed some charm and I really don't like Wil Ferrel and am not a fan of Nicole Kidman. Of all things, Get Smart was actually very fun. I enjoyed it and I love that show. Lost in Space was pretty bad.

Oh, here is an odd one, The Untouchables was great, though I wonder if that is really a case of a movie based on a show? I mean that was the nickname of the Elliot's group. On that note Dragnet was a fairly funny parody of Dragnet. Though it is not aging real well.

As to Whedon himself, well Serenity was a good closing to the short lived Firefly.

Why should Sarah Geller be tarred and feathered for the way she left? Do tell.

I've never been a big Buffy fan.

Whedon has a pretty funny take on this.

IIRC she announced her departure from the series in an interview before telling the rest of the cast and crew.

I am so sick of reboots and remakes at this point, but I can't work up special passion over this one. It just goes into the big melting pot of "oh look, they're doing it again."
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.
