    Default Chate

I was going to ask this in chate, but there's no point, coz there's rarely ever anyone there...

Is chate going to be abandoned forever? Until outsiders discover it and use it among themselves? Does it cost more to run a board with a dead chatbox attach to it than one without?

    It is for me.

I come in at the same time each week, give or take an hour or so. I have never seen such a drastic shift - six to eight people or so, down to two.

All I'm saying is, I've seen a drop. The drop might only be at this particular time, but it is all I see.
Something tells me we haven't seen the last of foreshadowing.

It must be the time difference. It's suddenly become more of an issue for some reason.

Chate is mostly dead, no way around it. It needs more activity to generate more activity but I have no clue how that will happen.

As Yogi said, "If people don't want to come out to the chate, nobody's gonna stop 'em."

Look, all I'm saying is that it's not dead. It very well may be on life support, but it's not dead. I try but I'm also in an upswing in demands scholastically speaking and don't spend as much time here as before.

Here's the thing: If you don't have one or two people sitting in chat for sixteen hours a day, then everytime somebody glances in there at an odd time of day they see no one. So they don't chat. And then five minutes later when somebody else glances in, they see no one. So they don't chat.

If you're scared of chat being dead, then you can sacrifice yourself on the altar of super-happy-fun-chate-time and sit in there all day long.

Kvetching and worrying about it is kind of silly, though. It's a chat room. Chat rooms have downtime, except when you have one or two people living in them all day, every day.

Yeah, I read another board sometimes that has an off-board chat, and the chat is dead most of the time. The board's busier than this one, so if someone wants to chate, they post a thread on the board that says "come to chat, I'm bored!" and people will kind of migrate over there. But if you just go in there randomly, it's totally hit or miss whether anything will be going on.

I wasn't kvetching. I was asking why it dropped off so dramatically, and suddenly. If I was 'kvetching' I probably would've made this a Thunderdome thread instead of putting it here.

Well since I'm on holidays I haven't been around on chate much, and then Exy and Myrnalene who were the two most prolific chaters aren't around either. Spitz you just have to start drinking strong coffee and go on the dole and just chate all day and all of the night.

See, exy's dual monitor setup made him an ideal chatter, because he could have one screen devoted just to chat. I am always flipping between tabs and get easily distracted so my chatting can be short or I may even avoid it so as not to make people feel like I'm shunning them, if I know I won't be able to focus on chat that long.

I think AG is right about why it's died down so much recently. I've been sick and so not hanging around as much as I usually do as well. I'll pop on, post a bunch on the board and then wander off to sniffle and hate life. When I'm better and it doesn't take every ounce of my concentration to get work done, I'll be in chat more.

As for what it costs to have chat, it's really not much compared to the fact that we want a VPS for the site anyway. So we might as well take advantage of it as much as we can.
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.

I can add something which shows the number of people in chate to the front page and to the chatbox. That way you can see who is lurking around.

Of course, you can then despair at the lack of people in chat because everyone can see it is empty.

    Interested?

There is a new button in chate which will show all the active users in chate - it should time people out after 15 mins inactivity.

    Currently it shows only me

I don't chat much, but this is a cool addition. It might get me to look at it for longer than five seconds at a stretch.

Might be a dumb question, but is there any way to add a sound notification to chate? Maybe, something that goes off when someone makes their first post? I know I can't be the only one who opens a chate window, then goes off to do other things, and forgets it's there....

There are some sound options available.

You can get a notification either if there are new messages in the chat after a refresh or when a new unread chat appears. It can be disabled in the user profile as well.

I normally have speakers off, but if requested it can be done.

Ah, pffft! Chate's not dead! I was just kvetching (?) before. People are just busy. If you really wanna chate, you gottta be in the box basically 24/7. Also, what Jim said in #6.
