Mulligan as an aside to Deor. "All I shall say is remember to use them and do so wisely. That money was a gift and there to be spent and I'm sure you will put them to good use. Especially if it can protect you from the bad effects of your minor ring of power, which will come in useful". She smiles and then winks at him, "but I won't say no to a lifetime supply of charged bullets and sleep potions."

Thoroncir smiles and says to Deor, "You owe me nothing, my friend, but I understand your feelings. If you ever wish such a gift, or would rather call it a loan and pay it back on such terms as you choose, be assured that you have but to ask."

"So, having spent a large amount of money on lots of lovely things, I suppose we should be here to earn our keep. Does someone want to point us in the right direction, or do we start taking the city and surrounding country side apart to find out?" As everyone can tell, Mulligan is eager to get started.

Bitur actually had 2 additional Water Breathings thrown in to get him to 4000 gold after the discount.

After a whirlwind day of shopping; most settle down in the Visi House for the night. Thoroncir and Gwaelur proceed to do some major strength training having imbibed their potions. They will be eating extra rations, especially protein and certain green vegetables. The protein is achieved through primarily hard boiled eggs this night to supplement the main meal.

Deor is able to begin experimenting with the Ring wearing the Amulet. He realizes it is going to take some trial and error to learn how to enhance his powers using the ring. But the immediate affect is to be invisible and see several of the others that turn invisible via rings.

The night passes peacefully and the two parties set out in the morning with Capt Mun of Raj and 9 of his men and the 28 Sea-Knights. When the company is about 4 hours out, a halt is called and Captain Meriadoc explains it is time to meet our newest allies. A single beautiful Elven woman enters the camp. She is introduced as Linwen and is dressed oddly for an Elf. She appears to have long raven hair with perhaps green highlights of all things. Her eyes are green. She is wearing light weight clothing and soft slippers. She carries a fine looking bow, a wonderful looking small harp and two excellent swords; one long and one short. She could be young or old, it is impossible to tell.

In halting Westron but with a lovely voice she greets the party. “We desire peace with the King of Raj and King of Gondor to the fabled north. I be of the Harlindin Elves or perhaps you could call us the lost Elves of Harad. We work now with the King of Raj to erase the evil his grandfather erected on Raj.” Pointing to the other party, “These Elves talk most well of your Aragorn; a good man and elvish. I was told one of you is his daughter?” She walks over to Gilraen, indeed, small and young you could almost be one of our children. Welcome Daughter of Aragorn, Half-Elven. And welcome to her friends. Later I must talk to Drindoleth, before we are done.”

It is quickly explained that she leads 6 more Elven Scouts of great skill at not being seen or heard and are acting as outriders. A few in the party, including Deor with his new Ring, she later when she separates from the party that she climbs up on a nearly invisible animal never seen before.

There are Avari all over the world for all I know, and many are the kindreds long-sundered from mine. I am older than the Riddermark; but that is an eyeblink as Elves reckon the years, and many are the lost Elves of whom naught has been heard since ere the Moon rose. I am as eager as you to learn more of these people, and it may be that Linwen and I will exchange many songs in the time to come.

Thoroncir is very interested to learn more of these Harlindin Elves, and introduces himself to Linwen with a bow. Later, after she has left, he asks Gilraen what she more knows of them.

Are any of the Sea-knights those who fought alongside him aboard the Elendil and later stormed the beach near Port Hatha with him?

Somehow Mulligan was expecting to be doing something within the city in rooting out evil, although Rorimac is more than happy to be out in the wilderness doing likewise.

Among the Sea-Knights are Orodreth and Pelendur and most of the Sea-Knights were those that served with Captain Thoroncir for the past 7 months. There are 16 from The Elendil's complement and 9 from the other ships of the Fleet that came south and were part of the Port Hatha beach landing. The remaining 3 are from a detachment that came south later. These are all skilled vets though, well able to take care of themselves in battle. They range from 4th to 9th level.

Gilraen knows of no southern Elves and never heard of the Harlindin. She had dozens of questions of her own.

The mission is to ride out swiftly to meet the King's representatives coming south and escort them to Bozisha-Dar. We will ride east along the south bank of the river and then north east to the lake on the cart path and finally north to the most north east town and fort called Dravoon of Raj. This is Capt. Mun's (short U sound as opposed to Moon) home fort.

Dec 13th: Capt. Mun and 9 riders, Capt. Meriadoc's Party of 10, Gil-Gandel’s Party of 12, Linwen and her 6 scouts and 28 Sea Knights will head by the main road. It is 95 miles to main bridge and then 60 miles to the Northern Lake Town. Finally 47 miles to the north east Village of Kingdom. 40 miles per day or an expected 5 days travel. Gwaelur will ride with Ceol. This will give us an 18” speed overall.

On a map they show you is the name of the north east fortified hill town and locations of the Wizard Schools not in Bozisha-Dar. There are 5 in all and 2 in Bozisha-Dar; the oldest and newest. The newest being the Illusionist school. The Necromancers have a hill fort or forts to the south. Then a school near the Lake called the Lake School and a school in Tresti, the town of Oliphant training.

Over the next few days, much of the story of Linwen is cleared up but all must be kept quiet. The men of Raj and even the Sea-Knights are not privy to this. The Harlindin are indeed lost Elves and not even technically Avari as they as they did not refuse the invitation but rather missed it entirely.

Lindar the Bard of the other party has worked out much of their story but has yet to put it properly to song.

The full story is long. I have posted it in the Time Line thread instead.

December 16th at 2am: The 67 are attacked at camp 10 miles before the bridge. Just off the main road. The camp is protected by a hedge of trees, heavy thorny brush and thick brambles erected by the magic of the Druids with some help from Lindar's singing. Within the camp are a few sturdy trees suitable for bowing from for the Elves and a field of food for the horses and people of the party. A supply of water is also produced by Bjorn for the camp but not enough for the horses. They were well watered though at several stops at the river on the way.

Drindoleth learns much from Bjorn in constructing small Druid Circles for night camps. Though Bjorn has the advantage of an item that aids his plant growths.

At around 2:00 am one of the owls come flying in followed by the second. Each lands on a Druid and wakes them up fast and lets them know that a large party of over 60 is approaching from the south and they look unfriendly. The Druids alerts the camp and the guards and all hastily wakes up and get their armor on.

A hasty plan is made. Linwen's scouts will attack the incoming from the right and between the parties should come their best archers to attack from the left. The best fighters should form up a skirmish line supported by the spellcasters and finally the Sea-Knights and at least Haldreng the Paladin will hang back a bit and wait to charge in once the area is lit up. The horses not used in combat are put under the guidance of Cúran and Missy, the horses of Gil-Gandel and Gilraen.

Will Hound escort Drindoleth? Will Ceol and Thoroncir be mounted or part of the front line? What do the Hobbits plan to do? Any spell preparations? You should have a good 5 minutes before the combat.

Ceol, as a knight of the Mark, will prefer to be mounted, though, if the front line looks to be weaker, he will volunteer to dismount and take to the skirmish line. (In the latter case, would it be possible for someone who does not have a warhorse to ride Leofwin?)

Hlíf suggest the 3 Dwarves for a central shield wall that the humans can work around.

A Rider of the Mark will not normally let another use his horse. The bond is much stronger between the Rohirrim and their horses than for others. We have enough front line fighters to let a Paladin do what he does best and prepare to charge.

Lindar and Bren will take one side of the Dwarves. Elfstan will support them. Sala will take the other side with whoever else from your party joins him. The men of Raj will fill in as needed to either side.

I will give Glinras a blast when battle is within a round of being joined. That will give every ally within 11" a +1 bonus to hit and saves. Follow that with a few stirring verses in the opening rounds of combat for another +1 to hit and to morale - range is unstated but presumably it is "earshot". We have better spellcasters than me but if the archers are being overrun I can throw an Entangle down (oddly, none of its parameters are related to the caster's level), or for very close-quarters defence I can use Hypnotic Melody with a -2 save because of the Harp on all creatures (up to 24HD total) in a 3 x 3 area directly in front of me. As far as possible though it will be bow work, preferably looking for spellcasters, officers or opposing archers.

Deor will knead the sleep from his eyes, gather his belongings together and out of the way, and begin kindling a fire in his magical brazier. He'll do his best to hide the glow, however, so that no enemies are aware that their surprise has been blown. Deor will send Folca to the top of the tree to serve as his eyes, and he'll make sure that she's still invisible so that she'll be entirely safe. He'll gather his weapons- staff in his left hand, wand in his right- and set up his mechanical dragon to fly out, lodge itself in a tree, and light up so that the men here can see what they're fighting.

He won't use his Ring of Power yet; it's dark, this may be chaotic, and he doesn't want to get trampled in the melee while invisible.

If this makes sense to the rest of the party, Deor will hide fifteen yards behind the Dwarves, crouched down and concealed beneath his cloak. He'll loose his first Fireball on a signal from Gil-Gandel, so that he can fire in a full broadside with the Elves in the tree above him. When the enemies close with the Dwarves, Deor will stand, advance just into range, and use his wand to scorch the foes over the Dwarves' heads.

Finally, Deor can place a Wall of Fire wherever and whenever the party wishes. Placing it in front of the party would block the enemies from advancing on us, but that may not ultimately serve our interests, although it would allow our archers lots of time to snipe. However, placing it twenty-five feet ahead of the party with the energy directed back toward the party after the enemies engage would cut off retreat and prevent reinforcements, as well as cutting off their archers and spellcasters, allowing our cavalry to ravage them.

What do we know about the approaching foes? Are they men, orcs, or something else? Mounted or foot? How are they armed?

Ceol quickly dons his armor, and saddles Leofwin. He then drops to one knee, asking for Eonwë's blessing for the party in the upcoming battle, before mounting up.

If there's room for it, given the terrain of our prospective battlefield, Thoroncir, Orodreth, Pelendur and the seven other mightiest Sea-knights will don their armor, mount up and prepare to charge along with the redoubtable Ceol. If it's possible to hide a few hundred yards ahead of the Dwarven-anchored battleline and off to one side before our foes arrive, Thoroncir and his party will do so, ready to attack the flank of the enemy once they're fully engaged.

The rest of the Sea-knights will remain afoot, deployed into the battleline as needed, and are ordered to consider themselves under Gil-Gandel's command if Thoroncir falls out of touch with them during the battle.

Drindoleth will keep Hound with him as he moves into a good defensive position behind the skirmish line. He will try to find a place where he and his animal friends will not be immediately seen, but he can see over his allies heads. Before the fight begins, he'll try to learn what more that he can of the attackers from his animals. The owl saw them and if nothing else, Hound should be able to catch the scent of the approaching party if they're only five minutes away. If they are Men or Orcs, and if they have mounts with them, should be knowable. He'll use Speak With Animals to better question the owl, being able to converse with Hound on his own.

Since Entangle has already been taken care of, Drindoleth prepares Produce Flame. He has no bow, but some thrown fire won't be a welcome sight for anyone attacking.
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.

There is enough time to fully armor, even the pair of plated Dwarves.

Orodreth of the Sea-Knights says to Captain Thoroncir, "Sir, the Sea-Knights are best used mounted, a charge of Knights as a reserve is very effective against spell casters and we are better able to pursue any fleeing. Haldreng the Knight of Eonwë has already offered to lead the reserve. His horse is mighty and the rest will follow him well."

The parties form up in to their groups. Thoroncir leading the best Knights with Ceol to strike fast and hard when the opportunity arrives.

Mírëgol will be riding and supporting the archers. She is fast and quiet on her Minaras. Meriadoc is also supporting the archers.

We still need to know what the Hobbits plan.

If the Sea-Knights are all mounted and Captain Mun's riders are all mounted, and those who normally fight mounted are mounted, we're left with something like ten melee fighters who won't be Elves shooting from a perch in a tree. We should try to force a bottleneck, or else I can put up a Wall of Fire around the tree to block us off.

Good idea, Drindoleth. Men (or orcs) may quickly realize that your thrown fire is not especially dangerous, but it will likely spook any animals - without seriously hurting them, which may ease your vocational conscience. If you are closely beset, may I remind you that most enemies don't have your skill at moving through bramble thickets and the like? It's easy to forget that not everyone knows how to do what we ourselves do every day.

Stand fast, your blades and shafts alike prepare:
True heart and hand fail not by day or night!
    Prepare to put the enemy to flight;
With courage vanquish every dark despair.
Both allies known and distant-sundered kin
Each other trust with hope of life and limb,
And, be the foe however cruel and grim,
In confidence prepare the field to win.
Let arrows true and lance so firmly set
Strike home and smite the foul accursed hordes,
And mighty axe and wellforged shining swords
Prove true as they have never failed us yet.
To battle, all! Scorn dread and fear of pain!
Will darkness fall? Nay, day will come again!

"That is an excellent thought, Gil-Gandel! If they get close, I can shift to my bear form and enter the entangled region. If they're ensared well, I'd be able to hold an advantage. Hopefully I might be able to spook their mounts before then, assuming they have any."

Rorimac is happy to either stand with the best archers or to work with Linwen's scouts on the right and provide some communication between the groups.

Mulligan will either stay out the way and keep an eye on the horses or if anyone is interested in joining her, she is prepared to head around the back of the oncoming group and cause havoc from the rear.

The front line is formed with the two horsed forces readied. It is safe to assume Linwen and her scouts are ready. The archers get ready. Mírégol will try a mass sleep to drop as many low levels as possible right after Deor signals the attack with a fireball. How does Deor use his first fireball? Does he enhance the area or max out the hit points. The incoming army is fairly spread out to where no more than 4 people will be in a normal fireball.

Gilraen will toss a light spell in the middle of the enemy. There are several opponents carrying very bright torches, probably magical in nature. There must be just over a hundred of them in all in roughly a 10x10 square. This spreads the front out 20".

"Here we go again, Elfstan, let's have some fun. Oh and when Deor launches that Fireball, I'll set off a smoke bomb over their major casters. That should slow them down a bit as its a bit difficult even with a Light spell to see in fog."

Deor crouches against the tree, his cloak wrapped around his body, watching through his own eyes and Folca's, appreciating once again how much his ring improves his vision at night. He'll try not to draw attention to himself; at least, not until the enemies are in range of Gil-Gandel's arrows. Fortunately, he won't have to compromise today between damage and power in his Fireballs; his golden brazier is almost singing as it heats over its fire, the subtle incense just beginning to smoke, and he's gently turning his new Ruby over in his hands. He taps his chest to ensure that his new amulet is in place (it is) and then slowly slips his new ring onto his finger. He'll begin this battle the moment that the enemies are within the archers' range.

The Brazier will be used to extend the area of effect, and the Ruby will max out the damage from the spell.

Bitur forms up the shield wall with his dwarf brothers and the others.

"Stand firm and strong. As long as our wall remains intact, the enemy won't stand a chance!"

and while everyone else stands firm waiting the oncoming horde, Mulligan moves silently through the undergrowth and watches the torches go past.

There are several opponents carrying very bright torches, probably magical in nature. There must be just over a hundred of them in all in roughly a 10x10 square. This spreads the front out 20". The eerie torchlight gives many of the foe the appearance of being bathed in blood.

The shield wall forms around the three Dwarves with Bren, Sala and Lindar and the Raj under Captain Mun. Both Druids, Gilraen, and Deor support them. Ithilneth, Gil-Gandel, Felyahin, Nico, Meriadoc and Rorimac take the left flank as archers with Mírégol supporting. Linwen’s band has the right. The two young Hobbits are hiding and soon passed by the large spread out troop. Captain Thoroncir and Ceol lead the elite Sea-Knights off to the side and Haldreng is ready to lead the rest of the Sea-Knights in an irresistible charge they hope.

Sala is given a Barkskin spell by Bjorn shortly before the combat.

Deor drops his fireball in the middle of the enemy and catches 13 in its enlarged and deadly circle. One is holding aloft a wicked sword that flames up but he is left untouched. Two scream and die and one suffers the indignity of his staff exploding, he is thrown down and weeping. 11 are seriously injured or dead. Bjorn sets off a large entangle just behind the front line on the left side and Drindoleth’s entangle to behind that. A smoke bomb lands in the center of all.

The sound of Glinras strengthen the heart of allies and raise moral in a large area giving allies a +1 to hit & saves. Gil-Gandel’s poetry then strengthens their resolve. Gilraen tosses a light spell in the middle of the enemy. She then begins Estë Prayer song that gives friends a +1 Save and -1 to be hit and damage in a 12”r, last 2r/lvl after she is done singing.

Lindar blows his horn and the fighters of both parties are given the effect of a Super Heroism potion. Everyone is fighting at additional 2-4 levels except for Meriadoc and Hlíf. They are too high a level. Even a few of the Raj are aided.

Arrows fly from both flanks and most find targets though one mage on the left is discovered to have protection from normal missiles up and then a series of +3 & +4 Dwarven arrows fly into her. A dark robed figure in the entangled area raises his staff and the plants begin to wither and die for a 12” radius around him. The Entangles are effectively cleared. Fighters charge at the archers out of this area and the front ranks clash. A spell goes off to the front from the middle before the Hobbits can target this figure but whatever dark magic he threw is absorbed by Bjorn.

Mulligan and Elfstan combine to knife him in the back and hamstring him just as Thoroncir and Ceol come thundering in the rear left flank to disrupt the combat further. Ceol finds one radiating evil and runs him through and switches to swords for the rest of the work. Thoroncir runs through a dark robed figure apparently trying to cast. Baygir thentramples the fallen foe. Mulligan’s paralysis drug seems to have worked.

Mírégol’s Mass Sleep spell drops 18 of the lesser fighters clearing the way for tougher targets. Where the arrows of the Harlindin Elves strike about half their target swoon into sleep or paralysis.

In the front the fighting is fierce. But the men of Raj and the North are equal to the task. Drindoleth begins his transformation into a giant bear to fight the foe. The Dwarves of course appear to be untouchable to the foes. Their shields and armor alien to the overmatched fighters of the Necromancers.

To the left flank the archers must give way but those coming at them take a terrible toll and are soon surprised by the fierce resistance of two figures the size of children. Meriadoc and Rorimac and the Felyahin protect the rest of the archers. Mírégol’s Unicorn charges into a figure to the rear and knocks him over and then from nowhere a giant jet black panther? At least 10’ long attacks and finishes him off. A lightning bolt strikes the trio but is dissipates harmlessly and apparently into the giant cat.

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The melee gets fierce and chaotic as fighting becomes fully engaged. Deor sees his Wall of Fire could isolate the front line from the rest and make the job of his friends easy. The Knights come thundering in led by Haldreng and sweep a path from the right side through the first several ranks of the foe. Mulligan sees another unarmored foe and goes for the easy target. She again succeeds and seriously harms the necromancer. His monkey attacks her though and Elfstan kills it with Sting. This causes the necromancer to scream in agony.

Drindoleth joins the battle as a huge bear. He grabs one of the larger fighters and crushes him in a bear hug, snapping his spine like a stick. Once the Wall of Fire goes up the allies quickly overwhelm the isolated foe. The wall also injures those on the wrong side of it with flames. One soldier of Raj drops but Gilraen is swiftly there. She exclaims, “They are using poison.”

Arrows flying from both directions continue to disrupt spellcasters and Mírégol’s Magic Missiles injure 4 armored spellcasters. She’ll say later she suspected they were shamans of Morgoth. The battle is going very swiftly against the foe. But a few round in and they are disrupted and in danger.

The dark figure the destroyed the plants; is now fighting for his life against Felyahin. Arrows do not seem to strike him though. Thoroncir sees this and charges again for this most dangerous looking one. He takes a few hits in rushing through the fray but strikes hard and strikes true. With the necromancer knocked over Felyahin gets two clean hits on him that keeps him from rising again. Ceol is hard engaged with a skilled foe in banded armor. Ceol is overmatched but soon aided by two Sea-Knights.

Mulligan scans around with the work nearly accomplished and if there is no-one near heads towards the rear of the group to make sure no-one gets away.

Rorimac will continue fighting alongside his father to protect the archers and take the fight to their foe.

Deor will, for the most part, refrain from casting at this point. If he sees any spellcasters still standing, he'll honor their opposition with a Magic Missile, or if any enemies are close by he'll favor them with a Burning Hands from his wand, but that's it, unless the fight turns against the party badly.

Ceol nods to the Sea-Knights in thanks, as he cries out, "For Eonwë! For Rohan!", and redoubles his attack on the man in banded armor.

Thoroncir, too, will come to Ceol's aid, unless he sees another ally in greater need closer at hand. Elendil!

Carry on loosing at the important-looking targets, and make sure Ceol and company aren't getting overwhelmed - if they are, direct bow-fire to thin the enemy ranks around them. I'm sure they're fine though.

Drindoleth will look for another opponent to attack. With the advantage of his form, he'll try to find another one of the larger fighters or go to the aid of one of his allies should any need him.

Deor lets loose with a Burning Hands to assist Gwaelur but the front line finishes it work fairly swiftly. Gwaelur and Bitur chop their way through their foes and with Hlíf step out of the wall of fire to attack a fresh foe turning to attack a Sea-Knight. They make short work of him.

Drindoleth takes on another of the flaming sword uses. He takes 15 points of damage in his uber-bear form but resists the fire damage off course. The hapless foe is then hugs and his sword brought against himself. The horrible smell of charred flesh is strong in Drindoleth's nostrils.

Arrows fly and Gil-Gandel adds specific support to Ceol's foe. Ceol is holding his own but now down 52 points from multiple wounds. Thoroncir cuts through the fray as Ceol strikes a critical blow to his opponent’s knee with his short sword, but before Thoroncir can strike the man sends his sword deep into Ceol’s abdomen dropping Ceol to the ground down 69 points in all. Thoroncir strikes a blow deep into the exposed neck of the man and drops him in turn. He sees 6 swords wounds and 5 arrows in this dead man and gives the Cirist perhaps an extra twist as he pulls it free.

Ithilneth’s arrows do a good job supports the Hobbits defending the archers.

Mulligan sees a necromancer type trying to flee and then using invisibility. She quickly sends a pair of magic missile enchanted stones into him and if rewarded with a visible and unconscious foe. Elfstan is on him fast and finishes him off.

Rorimac is doing well with his father. The effect of Lindar’s horn is a great aid. The pair hit the foes low and the young archer Nico has clean shots over their heads and he never seems to miss. Ithilneth’s arrow keep the right flank harried and none are left to the left flank.

Within another minute the work is done. The chaos of charging knights, Linwen striking the head clean off a Cultist Caster and Mírégol’s strange giant black cat has made this a rout. Retreat proves hopeless as the Harlindin scouts are swifter by far.

Only small items are gain, most of the equipment was enspelled or evil. The gold was minimal. The sleepers were killed in the melee trampled under hoof.

Still December 16th: After a lot of healing by the Druids and of course Gilraen the party is able to return to camp and complete their rest. The next morning the party reaches the Bridge with no further problem. A few of the most observant party members not Linwen’s small group ride the Okapis over the water while she is playing some hard to define tune.

December 17th at 5pm: Reach Vingaard Village in hill between Bridge and Suza Rij. Look for the dark dot on a hill along the path from bridge to North West town on lake. This is the only large supply of drinking water for the horses on the route. As the town is approaches, it appears deserted and the Fort looks very heavily damaged.

Does the party wish to investigate?

Ithilneth suggests, "We should investigate this site. Both to secure our rearguard and as a possible base of operations."

"Agreed. Let's see if we can figure out what caused all the damage, and possibly rescue any survivors. Just be on your guard."
