Default Peter Jackson's Deal for ‘The Hobbit’ Is Finalized

    Yep. It's happening.

Oh, wait, no. There's a union dispute.

...but after that's taken care of, it's totally happening!

This thing has had so many false starts I won't believe it until they actually start.

Same here, Jim. Start filming it and then I might believe.

Yeah, I expect a live-action Hobbit to get made at some point...never.

By the time everything's lined up right they'll probably want to replace everyone with computer animation.

Every single piece of news about this project has filled me with some kind of vague dread. Are they still planning on making it 2 movies?

It will be two movies and largely involve side-trips that Bilbo took while no one was looking. 90% of it will be invented on the spot and be pure fan service, for imaginary fans.

Someone, please remove Peter Jackson's hands from the rights. It's not like he kept following the book by the end of LotR and had fun making it up as he went along.

And he missed out the most important bit as well.

I'd like to say that this is a joke, but...it actually sounds pretty accurate to what's been coming out about it.

I don't know if anyone saw the press release, but apparently Martin Freeman will be playing Bilbo Baggins.

I'll see if I can find it again.

Yes, it's true, Freeman will play Bilbo, if they ever start filming. Color me skeptical, too, although everyone involved has to know there's so much money that can be made from this, I think it'll get done. Eventually. Soon, I hope, but there'll probably still be plenty of bumps in the road along the way.

Last I heard, the side trips will be by Gandalf, not by Bilbo. Gandalf spends a lot of The Hobbit offstage, remember.

I'd really prefer not seeing Gandalf's side trips. Reducing his mystery to that degree would be a mistake, IMHO.
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.

The whole White Council and his prior pair of missions into Dol Guldor are fertile areas.

Yeah. Ever since I was a child, I wondered what the White Council actually did that could move Sauron out of a fortress (and I know he was just feinting, but it had to look credible). But in my imagination, it can at least remain sorta plausible. On the screen, it would probably look dumb.

And apparently it will be filmed in New Zealand after all.

Wow, it sounds like they're really bullying New Zealand. That's not cool.

Actually the actors union of NZ made crazy and unreasonable demands. They basically wanted a higher scale than Hollywood gets is my understanding.

I should add, that if the Union did not get greedy to start with then the Government would not have had to sweeten the deal so much.

Looks like the Kiwis didn't take too much arm-twisting. Since LOTR they really, really, really want to have these movies made there, and who can blame them?: http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-f...nce-bec,46753/
