Default Commonwealth Games 2010 in crisis

The Commonwealth Games 2010 is being held in India in less than two weeks and the stories coming out about the athletes accomodation, the sports facilities, security arrangements are very worrying if they expect the games to go ahead.

The main visitors bridge collapsed while being assembled killing injuring 27 people and a portion of the weightlifters arena roof has caved in. Not to mention, the flooding and filth in the athletes quarters. The area seems to have been built on a flood plain and the worst monsoon rains for years have conspired. Several athletes who would have been competing have backed out and I don't blame them.

If India was trying to set an example, their claim was to rival the Beijing olympics, then they have failed miserably. Its a shame because the last two games went well and Manchester did very nicely out of hsoting it in 2002.

Meanwhile, the chief minister of Delhi, where the Games are being held, tried to calm visiting delegations after a pedestrian footbridge collapsed outside the main venue. The bridge was only for the use of spectators, she told the press, not for athletes or officials.

Wait, the article says 27 people were injured, not killed. Still, this sounds awful. At what point, I wonder, do they just say "hey, this isn't going to happen." Probably never, they will go ahead as best they can and it will be a disaster.

Yeah, fuck those spectators. So long as the athletes are okay, who cares?

This just sounds dreadful all around.
