Brownlock approaches Pev and politely addresses him. "My Banij friend, we would like to learn more about our new neighbors in space. We have learned much from our tricorder devices, but our knowledge would be more complete if you would allow me to take a few tissue samples from you -- it will not be invasive, and will be completely painless..."

Pev stands still, stares at you and then appears to tremble a little, as he and his shipmates had earlier done. Then he says, "You may remove tissue samples from me, Doctor, if you wish. And may our doctors do so from your people as well, especially Sathev, when we return to our homeworld?"

Brownlock replies, "I cannot speak for Sathev, but I am willing to give you biosamples myself..."

The Captain is a little taken aback by Pev's request. She rubs her chin and says, "I hadn't thought of a reciprocal tissue exchange, but... I suppose it makes sense. Any of my crew who wish to voluntarily provide tissue samples may do so, unless there's a good medical reason not to." This is acceptable to Pev and his shipmates. Brownlock then removes tiny but sufficient circulatory fluid and tissue samples from all three of them, using a light anesthetic that is approved for use on Saurians and that your tricorder readings indicate would be safe and effective for the Banij. They say they felt no pain. Sathev agrees to provide samples in due time; does anyone else from the boarding party?

Singh then bids farewell to the Venture's crew, expresses her hope that one, two or all of them will soon visit the Yorktown, and calls Chief Harrison for beamout. In moments the transporter whisks you back to your ship. What would you like to do now?

Brownlock will take the samples to Sickbay's lab and begin his analysis. He also suggests a quick check of the landing party to make sure there are no ill effects from the tri-ox or anything from the Banij ship.

Everyone says they feel fine, and a quick sweep with your medical tricorder's detachable scanner confirms that no one has suffered any ill effects from the mission.

Ens. Hayes agrees to provide tissue samples for the Banij to study. Hayes will first report to Lt. Cmdr. Roble and give him a brief report. She will then take her tricorder readings and add them to the library computer's database for further analysis. And, after all that talk about pizza, she'll head to the mess hall for a few slices.

Fujishiro reports to the Captain as to what she's found in her sensor sweeps. Singh asks you to make more detailed scans of the orbital debris, and the unexplained sensor anomaly. Singh also posts the Banij request for biosamples to the ship's daily orders, which are posted to every crewmembers' comm account. Participation is strictly voluntary, she emphasizes. Those who wish to contribute are asked to report to Sickbay for the extraction of small samples - blood and tissue, or their equivalents - by Drs. Villa and Brownlock.

Roble thanks Hayes for her work on the boarding party. He will review your tricorder records while you have lunch.

Ens. Terezis bumps into Collins near the Transporter Room. Your cabinmate is very interested in hearing what the Banij ship was like, and if you had any trouble over there. She mentions that she'll be providing biosamples, and asks if you'll do so, too.

Delaney will check in with Lt. Edgardo Cheverez and suggest, "I think I should upload the data from my tricorder and begin a detailed analysis of the engineering scans if there is nothing else more pressing. I think it would be good if Mr. Sathev worked with me on this."

Collins tells Terezis what she observed while on the Venture - that the Banij seem friendly and genuinely interested in off world cultures "But, no," Jeremi continued, "I think I'll pass on the tissue sample donation. You go right ahead, though. Maybe we can meet later in the lounge for some gaming?"

Terezis frowns. "I hope I'm not prying, but... why don't you want to give a sample? They gave samples to us, didn't they?"

"Yes, they did," Collins answered "and I'm sure we'll have more than enough volunteers. It's just one of my quirks - I don't like being poked and prodded." Jeremi hoped her roommate would accept this at face value and drop the subject.

After lunch, Hayes heads to Sickbay to provide biosamples for the Banij. She then returns to the Science Department to see if Lt. Cmdr. Roble has any further questions or comments about her tricorder readings from the boarding party.

Terezis accepts Collins's explanation with a shrug and a smile, and then asks, "Want to go grab a bite?"

Hayes has a good meal, sharing a table with Lt. Lars Dahlquist, a handsome Engineering officer originally from Sweden; Ens. Oscar Rico, a impulse drive specialist; and Lt. JG Gral, a Tellarite botanist. Dahlquist definitely catches your eye. Later, in Sickbay, Nurse Sarah Perry takes your biosamples quickly and painlessly while Dr. Villa is helping an Engineering tech with a badly sprained ankle. Roble is not yet done reviewing your work, but likes what he sees.

Pourtash is still at the Helm when Ren, commander of the Venture, signals that they will now be returning to Banij Prime, as he believes that first contact with the Federation is far more important than the current round of tests. Capt. Singh acknowledges this, telling you and Bennett, "Match their course and speed; we'll accompany them back home." She repeats her invitation for any or all of the alien crew to visit the Yorktown.

Collins and Terezis have a nice lunch together.

The Chief Engineer approves Delaney's recommendation to review tricorder scans of the Venture with Sathev. There are no particular surprises among the data. Are you looking for something in particular?

Brownlock's research indicates that the Banij are indeed very similar to Saurians. More interestingly, however, all three of the Venture's crew are genetically identical; upon closer examination, you also see slight indications of replicative fading. You find no physiological explanation for their trembling or staring.

Within a few hours, 89 Yorktown crewmembers have provided biosamples, including the Captain, First Officer, Chief Engineer, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Brownlock, Ens. Sathev and Ens. Hayes.

Singh asks the senior staff - which, as you know, includes you - to meet her in Conference Room 1 immediately.

As usual Delaney is just being thorough when it comes to engineering. He is hoping for some technique they used new to the Federation to add to the Federation's knowledge.

He reports to Conference Room 1 swiftly.

Ens. Hayes reports to Conference Room 1. She can't stop thinking about Lt. Dahlquist and his smile. Hayes inwardly chastises herself for distracted thinking and does her best to focus on her duty. However, she might ask Lt. Bennett about Dahlquist once the meeting is over. Then again, maybe she won't. Duty first and always, she reminds herself. But that smile....

You all sit down with Singh, Vargas and the department chiefs around the conference room table. The Captain says, "The Banij crew have declined my invitation to visit us just yet; they prefer to remain on their ship until we've returned to Banij Prime. Commander?"

Vargas reports, "We're on impulse power, matching course and speed with the Venture, and should make orbit in the next two hours. Dr. Villa, please have the biosamples collected and ready to turn over to the Banij when we send down our first landing party."

"Of course," Dr. Villa says. "That won't be a problem. At this rate we'll probably have about a hundred donations."

Singh calls upon Thalen for a report on his analysis of Banij communications. The Andorian says, "Preliminary indications are that the Banij do not yet have a single planetary government. There are apparently three major continental or national governments, of which the Na-Banij, who built the Venture, are one. The Na-Banij appear to be the most technologically advanced, in space, communications and food production, while the Soj-Banij have a larger and more heavily militarized population. They are somewhat antagonistic towards each other, and Soj-Banij... propaganda, for lack of a better word, makes reference to several past conflicts between them, some of which were quite bloody. The Na-Banij are extremely proud of the Venture, and now its encounter with us, and in their civilian broadcasts have been placing great emphasis on our first contact as a great moment for all Banij. The third major government, the Deq-Banij, have focused on oceanic exploration more than space. Each has one major space station, it seems more for reasons of national pride and rivalry than out of necessity. There are another five or six secondary powers, and another dozen of lesser but varying sizes and influence, none of which have any presence in space." He passes a data tablet to Hayes and says, "I hope I can have the benefit of your xenosociological expertise in reviewing this, Ensign."

"Well done, Mr. Thalen," the Captain says. "Before we turn to Dr. Brownlock for his medical findings, and Ens. Hayes for her sensor analysis, does anyone have any thoughts or insights into what we saw and heard on the Venture?"

Delaney speaks up, "Ma'am my report is fairly simple. They seem like an efficient, intelligent and well organized people. The engineering of the ship was excellent for their technical level. The people were friendly and my gut instinct is they would be valuable members of the Federation. But of course gut instincts are not what diplomacy is built on of course."

After a short pause he continues, "The Warp Drive might be a little suspicious though compared to the rest of their planet. It will be interesting to learn more of their advancements towards warp technology. It is possible they either had some small help or discovered an old wreck to speed up their development. I think it is worth a careful investigation though I do not think it is of grave importance."

Ens. Hayes takes the data tablet from Thalen with a smile. She can't wait to review these findings in more detail.

"Captain, my interactions with Pev were friendly and helpful. He was curious. Always a good sign. He willingly answered my questions as well as asking a few of his own." She paused to gather her thoughts. "The sharing of biosamples is a positive step forward, I believe. We're eager to learn more about them and they feel the same."

Pourtash looks thoughtful, frowning slightly. "I wasn't on the Venture, Captain, but I did have a question about Delaney's observations. Is the Warp Drive unusual in comparison to the technology on the ship itself, or simply in comparison to what we know of their level of development in general?"

Delaney, "I am not sure, but while the warp drive seems normal for the ship itself, it seems a little advance for the little we know of the planet thus far. This is just precautionary though. All it means is we should do a lot more digging and observation."

Capt. Singh thanks Delaney, Pourtash and Hayes for their comments.

Ens. Fujishiro reports that, in making more detailed scans of the orbital debris, she found that it was metal, plastic and some glass, consistent with the destruction of satellites or spacecraft. None of the debris is more than five years old. She cannot quite figure out the unexplained sensor anomaly; it may be a sensor "ghost" caused by a reflection and diffraction of the Yorktown's scans among the debris, or an inherent malfunction of the sensors, or....

"Or a cloaked ship," Lt. Cmdr. Roble says, rubbing his chin. He and the First Officer take a closer look at the data.

Always eager to advance science, of course Fujishiro volunteers to donate a tissue sample to the Banij researchers.

During the debriefing Fujishiro submits her report and verbally summarize the highlights:
    1) Only the homeworld and its moon appear to be inhabited. The moon has only a single station.
    2) There are three orbiting space stations and several orbit-capable vessels around the Banij homeworld.
    3) There are only several dozen artificial satellites and a large amount orbital debris.
    4) An unexplained sensor anomaly.

After the discussion, she requests to help Delaney with the further investigation of the sensor anomaly. In addition to the trace scans he suggests, she recommends a quick verification of calibration of the ship's sensors to reduce the possibility of a system problem. And also requests permission to send a probe in an orbit orthogonal to the Yorktown to reduce debris-caused distortions in the sensors.

Collins throws her 2˘ into the mix "The Na-Banij do not appear to pose any threat, but I recommend guarded caution at all times. We have yet to meet the other two, well, tribes for lack of a better word, and we don't yet know what their intentions are, or whether or not they have spies within the Na."

Hayes wishes Lt. Cmdr. Roble hadn't mentioned the possibility of a cloaked ship. That could mean one of three things. Romulans. Klingons. Or an unknown alien ship with cloaking technology. The Romulans -- clever and cunning. The Klingons -- brutal and cruel. Rachel had personal experience with Klingons and that alone made her blood run cold.

"I agree with Ens. Collins, " Hayes says. "We need to learn more about the Soj and Deq. And we need to proceed with caution."

The Captain smiles a little and says, "I may be many things, Mr. Hayes, but I think you'll find I'm not rash. We will, of course, proceed with due caution."

At her nod, Dr. Brownlock reports. He says, "I've completed my studies of the biosamples from all three of the Venture's crew, and found that they're genetically identical. That in and of itself is not necessarily significant, but if my interpretation of the Banij genome and anatomy are accurate, they aren't triplets or siblings arising from the same egg, or its Banij equivalent. There are also slight indications of replicative fading, which is strongly indicative of something else in at least the last few generations."

"Cloning," says Dr. Villa, nodding as she looks over the scan records. "So the Banij are clones?"

"It appears so, yes. Maybe not all of them on the planet, of course, but at least these three astronauts."

"Did you ask the Banij about cloning specifically?" Vargas asks.

"No, sir," Dr. Brownlock says. "But I intend to."

"I think you should," Singh says. "Good work, Doctor."

A bosun's whistle sounds, and Bennett's voice comes from the intercom panel set into the tabletop. "Bridge to Capt. Singh."

She presses a switch. "Singh here."

"Captain, the Venture is signaling us. Cmdr. Ren asks if they might take you up on your invitation, and have Pev beam over for a visit. He'd like to be aboard when we arrive at their homeworld."

Singh looks around the table for a moment, sees no opposition, and replies, "Of course. Dr. Brownlock and Mr. Hayes will meet him in the Transporter Room in five minutes."

"Aye, ma'am. I'll pass the word. Bridge out."

The Captain says, "Mr. Fujishiro, prepare a probe but don't launch it just yet. I don't want it to reach Banij orbit before we do; that might be misinterpreted. Run a system diagnostic to see if there are any problems with our sensors. Then, if everything's all right, carry out the scans we earlier discussed. Delaney, Collins, take a close look at what she finds. I want to know the engineering or military significance, if any, of the debris field and the sensor anomaly. Mr. Pourtash, I'd like you back at the Helm as we approach the homeworld. Anything further? Very well. Thank you all. Dismissed."

Hayes is eager to see Pev again. Her mind was swirling with questions. Clones? Sensor anomaly? Perhaps a cloaked ship? Things were getting interesting -- and complicated.

Rachel addressed Dr. Brownlock. "Shall we head to the Transporter Room, Doctor?"

Pourtash bites his lip, wrestling with himself before he leaves the room. This is really more the realm of security than any of his business and he doubts it will go over well, but his gut tells him something should be said. Or his gut is telling him to look like a paranoid, xenophobic jerk. He sincerely hopes it's the former and not the latter. The last bit about the identical genetics just pushed it over the edge.

"Captain, the combination of cloning, unexplained technological advancements and signs of a potentially cloaked ship could point to some sort of purposeful deceit or trap orchestrated by someone other than the Banij, with cloned astronauts and the ship being used to lure us in."

Delaney says, "Let's see what's hiding out there Collins. This should be fun." Delaney begins checking for all known warp and drive signatures in the area. Sets up an auto-program to look for star occultation and does a data retrieval for known successful finding of cloaked and otherwise hidden objects.

Delaney explains to Ens. Collins, "An occultation is an event that occurs when one object is hidden by another object that passes between it and the observer. The word is used in astronomy and can also be used in a general sense to describe when an object in the foreground occults that is covers up objects in the background."

"After you, Ensign Hayes," Brownlock replied. Hope she knows these corridors better than I do, Brownlock thought. Wouldn't instill much confidence in my medical abilities if I can't find my way back to transporter room.

Thanks, Elendil, for making Dr. B's report for me - I've been under the weather and off the computer for a few days...

Where are we going, and why are we in this handbasket?

Standing behind Delaney's chair, Collins watches the screens as Delaney's fingers dance around the panel. "So, why does something as simple as one object appearing closer than another required such a big word?" Collins really wished she had accompanied Hayes and Brownlock - her skills were wasted here.

Ens. Hayes leads Dr. Brownlock to the Transporter Room. She's relieved that the captain let them go alone. Clone or not, she wanted Pev to feel safe and secure. And hopefully "safe and secure" enough to answer some much needed questions about what was going on here.

Capt. Singh hears out the helmsman's concerns, and nods. "Thank you, Mr. Pourtash. Those are good points and I'm glad you raised them. You may well be right. For the time being, however, I think it's important that we continue with this first contact, and build upon our apparent progress thus far, so we'll proceed as I said. Please keep in close touch with Mr. Collins on the Bridge, though. She'll have weapons and deflector shield control at the Security station, but the Helm is a backup post for those systems if things go pear-shaped. Carry on."

Already on the Bridge, Fujishiro programs a Class 2 probe and also runs a diagnostic of the ship's sensors, which Delaney agrees reveals no problems. His program (slightly improving one which the ship already had) very efficiently processes the images gathered by the Yorktown's telescope and external cameras. It flags 17 initially otherwise-unexplainable occultations since the ship entered the system. The only two warp drive signatures in that time are those of your ship and the Venture. Starfleet records on cloaked objects are scant; only six races, including the Romulans and, recently, the Klingons (acquired through treaty with the Romulans) are known to have workable ship-mounted cloaking devices.

Brownlock and Hayes find the Transporter Room without difficulty. As you watch, Pev beams aboard and immediately makes a low chittering sound which you had not heard before.

ds9writer, no worries. I knew you were ill but wanted to move the game along. Hope you're feeling better.

It was a better response than Pourtash had hoped for. He didn't particularly like voicing such paranoia about a people who were by all accounts perfectly pleasant, but if something had happened and he hadn't said nothing... Not a line of thought worth following.

Ens. Pourtash returns to the Helm.

"Pev," Brownlock says politely. "Welcome aboard." He makes a mental note of the chittering, and chastises himself for not bringing a medical tricorder along. This new behavior was unexpected, and it would have been nice to have the medical readouts for further study.

Ens. Hayes, who did bring her tricorder along, follows Brownlock's lead. "I'm so happy to see you again, Pev," she says. "Welcome to our ship." Rachel hopes the readouts from her tricorder will shed some light on the chittering sound. Fear? A Na-Banij greeting of some sort? Or perhaps the transport itself had upset Pev in some way. It had taken her a while to get used to the sensation of transporting from one place to another.
