Ens. Delaney will report to Engineering as soon as his gear can be stowed. He always knows that Engineering is at Deck 19 and requests his quarters be somewhere close to Engineering if at all possible. Perhaps deck 18 has an opening?

Ens. Pourtash considered all of that, becoming more excited by the moment at the prospects before him. Of course he did his best to remain looking calm and professional, but the eagerness was clear in his eyes. "I have no further questions. I'm just eager to find my quarters and begin duties, Captain."

"Understood, sir," Brownlock said. "No other questions."

But he wasn't convinced - not totally...
Where are we going, and why are we in this handbasket?

Singh says, "Very well, then. Lt. Bennett, have quarters now been assigned to them all?" The younger officer looks down at her data tablet and nods. "Please take them there, then. You might want to have a bit of lunch, everyone, and have a look around the ship. We'll have a welcome-aboard dinner with the senior officers in the Wardroom at 1700 - that's in five hours, just across the corridor. Dress uniforms, mind you. See you then."

Your baggage has already been delivered. Everyone is assigned quarters on Deck 6 except Delaney, whom Bennett takes to Deck 18, close to Engineering. His cabinmate is Ens. Sasok, an Engineering warp field specialist and the first black Vulcan Delaney has ever seen. Despite his people's characteristic reserve, Sasok is cordial. "Perhaps you would like to have lunch, Ensign, and then a tour of the ship...?"

Hayes and Iota are assigned quarters together, convenient to a turbolift and just down the corridor from the ship's Communications Center. They play Rock-Paper-Scissors to decide who will get which bed.

Collins's quarters are just a minute's walk away from Hayes's and Iota's. She meets her new cabinmate, Ens. Euterpe Terezis, a young, quiet, rather shy Greek woman who is also a Security specialist, assigned to the Photon Torpedo Launch Bay. She has just returned from lunch, but offers, "I'll go with you to keep you company if you're hungry; I don't mind."

Dr. Brownlock's cabinmate is Dr. Giancarlo Bucci, a plump Italian man with a bone-breaking handshake. Like Brownlock, he is also a Starfleet lieutenant, but is a researcher with a specialization in virology. He greets Nigel warmly but soon turns back to the Library Computer terminal in your quarters, saying, "So sorry, Doctor, but I'm working on a research paper for the Starfleet Medical Journal on a damnably tight deadline."

Pourtash is assigned to share quarters with Ens. Mikhail Trigorin, a friendly, slightly older Engineering officer, assigned to impulse drive maintenance and deuterium fuel management. Without prompting, he proudly shows you pictures of his wife and four kids back on Ekaterina III, and says, "Tell me about your family, Faraz!"

You each get settled into your quarters, unpack and make sure that your dress uniforms are ready for later. What would you like to do next?

Delaney responds, "I would be DE-lighted to join you if you can spare me about four minutes to unpack and layout my dress uniforms. I would especially like to report to engineering as soon as possible after lunch. To be honest, I am very eager to see them though I know they are not going anywhere. Thank you very much. Warp Field is a fascinating study, my own studies tie into as I have been involved with the development and then operation of faster and more efficient warp engines. I look forward to working with you." He is quickly and efficiently stowing his gear through the fast monologue. "Please call me Jim if being informal is acceptable for you." He offers up a Vulcan hand symbol, not the best form but quite reasonable for a young human.

Ens. Hayes inspected her dress uniform for the third time. She turned to Ens. Fujishiro.

"Think I'll head to the mess hall for a bite to eat, then check out the science department. You're welcome to join me."

"Actually, Mr Terezis," Ens Collins paused a moment, "may I call you Euterpe? Please call me Jeremi. I was on my way to the gym. I felt cooped up and cramped on that shuttle. I need to stretch and get some cardio in before getting ready for dinner." Jeremi made a motion with her arm indicating an invitation for Ens Terezis to join her. "I'll grab a protein bar when I'm finished."

Brownlock sat on his bed, trying to decide how to decorate his precious few square meters of personal space. He took a sidelong glance at Bucci's area - hmm, no diplomas or medical certificates. Ok, strike that idea. His roommate had a few pictures on the shelf above his bed - a pretty young girl among them. "Sister, perhaps?" Brownlock wondered. "Little time for a girlfriend in Starfleet, much less a wife." He vowed to inquire - discreetly - when the opportunity arose.

Thirty minutes later, the area was decorated with the half-dozen items he managed to pack on short notice. All uniforms were hung neatly in the small closet, with special attention to the perfection of the dress uniform he would be donning in a couple hours.

That done, he waved a silent goodbye to Bucci and strode out into the corridor. Left... no right, to the turbolift. A quick peek into Sickbay, perhaps, then maybe some lunch. Not that he was hungry. He seldom was. Just a quick sandwich, and maybe some fruit. Wonder if the replicators on this ship were as bad as those on his last one...

Sasok smiles politely at Delaney's attempt at a Vulcan hand salute. He agrees to call you Jim, and says you're welcome to call him by his name, as well. After lunch in the nearest Mess Hall - good food, you notice - he takes you to Engineering, where he introduces you to Chief Engineer Cheverez, a small, stoop-shouldered older man with a ready smile and a booming laugh. He welcomes you aboard and invites you to look around, although he reminds you that you're not on duty until tomorrow morning. Sasok told you over lunch that Cheverez would tolerate some non-regulation things if the job got done well and if you showed initiative. The Chief Engineer is a highly knowledgeable troubleshooter who's not afraid to delegate.

Hayes and Fujishiro have a pleasant lunch together. Several other people in the Mess Hall, including some Sciences staff, come up and introduce themselves, making you feel welcome aboard the Yorktown. Brownlock comes in soon afterward, sees you and, at your invitation, joins you for lunch. You then visit your respective labs and offices together, and like what you see.

Terezis declines Collins's invitation to go to the Gym, but gives you directions on how to get there before turning back to her old book, which you notice is Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

Delaney thanks Sasok and Cheverez and can't help himself but starts pouring over the engine tests, reports and performance logs. He pays special attention to the repair log. It is a large task and so Delaney starts with the Warp Engines of course. Delaney will end up getting engrossed in his work and will just barely make it to the dress function that night. The only saving grace is that he knows himself well enough and his uniform is ready though surely not as neat as his fellow new crew.

Delaney is looking for one thing in particular while studying the warp logs. There is a little tweak Cmdr. Scott detailed in one of his white papers to auto-tune the harmonics of the dilithium crystals that has resulted in longer life and more importantly to allow for faster power flow demand in emergencies. It is fairly new and not Federation SOP yet and Delaney is looking to see if the Yorktown has implemented it yet. If not it will be his first recommendation to the CHENG.

Ens Collins finds a locker, and hangs her tunic in it, leaving a black tank top tucked in to her trousers. She goes over to the punching bag first, and begins a routine she has developed over the years designed to keep her reflexes at maximum.
After thirty minutes of that, she moves over to the mat where she works her way through a series of T'ai Chi moves, and finishes off running several loops around the perimeter of the Gym. Pleased with her heart rate, Ens Collins returns to her quarters and gets ready for dinner.

"These replicators are definitely a step up from my last assignment," Brownlock thought. "Crispest apple I've ever had from one."

"Oh, and Sickbay isn't bad either."

Cheverez is impressed by Delaney's gung-ho spirit, and will be interested to hear more about your proposed dilithium autotuning procedure; he had heard just a rumor of it on the Starfleet grapevine.

Just as Collins is about to start her workout, she's approached by a muscular young man who introduces himself as Ens. Ben Cooper, a shuttle pilot. He shows you where you can get exercise clothing for use in the gym (so as to keep your uniform clean), and the laundry dropoff for when you're done with it. "Hope I'll see you around again, Ensign," he says with a smile as he leaves.

Dr. Miriam Villa, the CMO, wasn't in when Brownlock visited Sickbay, but Dr. Helen Noel was. A beautiful, very smart brunette, she is the ship's psychiatrist, formerly assigned to the Enterprise. She's glad to show you around, and expects to be at the senior officer's dinner later.

Fujishiro carefully looks over the available equipment and other resources in the physics lab. She picks a less-used area as her workspace and organizes the tools to her liking. She makes sure her data files are uploaded to the computer and easily accessible from the local terminal. Once things are in order, she heads back to her room to prepare for the evening.

Ens. Hayes had grown used to wearing her dress uniform while serving at the Federation Embassy on Andor and the USS Kongo Parties and dinners with high-ranking officers and diplomats was second nature to her.

While diplomacy was important, Rachel longed to explore the vast expanses of space. To discover new aliens and their worlds. Perhaps she would have that opportunity aboard the Yorktown. She hoped so....

Brownlock was a little disappointed he wasn't able to meet the officer who had personally requested him. Where did she know him from? Did he, in fact, have a reputation in Starfleet? Nah, couldn't have. Unless... oh, he hoped that wasn't the case...

The six of you appear in the Wardroom on Deck 2 for dinner at the appointed hour. Stewards are already circulating with trays bearing appetizers, glasses of wine (Hayes sees a bottle as it’s being poured and notes with approval that it’s a Chateau Picard ‘50) and other refreshments. You meet the rest of the senior staff, all of whom, like you, are in dress uniform.

Cmdr. Pablo Echevarria Vargas, First Officer and Chief of Security, is a tall, balding Peruvian with an aquiline nose and an aristocratic air. He greets each of you politely but without any noticeable warmth. He stands near Capt. Singh but seems to exchange only an occasional quiet word with her. Both have an impressive array of small, triangular Starfleet decorations on their left breasts.

Lt. Edgardo Cheverez, Chief Engineer, says a few words to each of you, but is soon deep in conversation with Delaney about the new shipboard food replicators, and the occasional but persistent difficulties in changing over from the old protein resequencers.

Dr. Miriam Villa, Chief Medical Officer, is a petite, middle-aged American woman with a friendly smile and black, spiky hair going to gray. She walks in with Dr. Helen Noel, and it’s obvious that they’re good friends. They both greet Brownlock, and Dr. Villa is quite definite in her appreciation of all she’s heard about him. “This is a big ship, Doctor,” she says, “and I’m very glad to have you here. You come very highly recommended. Your predecessor, Dr. Peterson, was an excellent physician, but I’m sure you’ll fill his shoes admirably.” Drs. Brownlock and Villa are soon talking shop, but Noel is eager for the latest Enterprise news from Collins.

Hayes and Fujishiro are glad to finally meet Lt. Cmdr. Abdi Roble, Science Officer and Second Officer. He is an older Somali man, grave in his manner, almost gaunt in form, with a quiet voice but also, you soon learn, a puckish sense of humor. An astronomer by specialty but an excellent all-around scientist, he discusses the ship’s current charting mission with you both, and asks many questions about your backgrounds and interests.

Lt. Thalen, the Yorktown’s Communications Officer, is a youngish Andorian male, his pale blue skin and antennae unavoidably clashing with his red dress uniform shirt. He greets you all in turn, but spends most of his time talking to and laughing with Lt. JG Bennett about a particularly memorable shore leave on Wrigley’s Planet. Pourtash finds himself drawn to Bennett and has soon joined the conversation.

Who would you like to speak to? What do you say to him or her?

Ens. Hayes was impressed with Lt. Cmdr. Roble. She appreciated his interest in her background and interests. She looked forward to working with him.

Rachel excused herself and mingled amongst the dinner guests, chatting for a few moments with everyone.

She particularly enjoyed her conversation with Lt. Thalen. Lt. JG Bennett was also a pleasure to talk with.

Rachel couldn't help but notice the distinct differences between the captain and first officer. Very interesting.

Thalen, who you soon learn is a bit of a gossip, tells you - with a cautious glance at the First Officer - that the scuttlebutt is that Vargas has already twice been passed over for a command of his own. Bennett, frowning, says she's heard it only happened once, but she concedes that Vargas's mood has not been good recently.

Delaney really enjoys his conversation with Lt. Edgardo Cheverez and feels he has really landed in the right place at this point in his career. Cheverez is clearly not just a Department Head but someone that knows his systems and knows his engineering. Delaney remembers a piece of advice given to him on on the USS Ganymede to ensure he expands his horizons beyond merely the technical.

He strikes up conversations with the other diners and asks questions about the career and life and sits back and tries hard to pay attention and ask a few more questions along the way. If anyone talks science or systems he off course get far more talkative.

Jeremi would have liked to exchange more than introductions with Cmdr. Vargas, but it was clear that he would not have been receptive. She moves casually through the crowd, listening mostly, munching an occasional morsel, content with being among the crowd. That is, until Dr Noel approached her. Jeremi was reluctant to spread the myriad rumors she'd heard during her last assignment, but there were one or two harmless tales she was able to share.

Throughout their conversation on the latest diagnostic technology upgrades, the newer, more virulent strain of the Omega IV virus and Brownlock's interest in DNA research, he was dying to ask why Dr. Villa had requested him. However, he decided to address that subject when, if ever, it came up naturally in conversation.

After a while, Dr. Villa excused herself, citing an early duty schedule, and Nigel was left standing by himself, unable, and perhaps unwilling, to engage in conversations with the others. What did he know about warp fields, or phaser banks or celestial navigation? He couldn't wait to get down to Sickbay and be in his element.

Ens. Hayes invites Lt. Thalen and Lt. JG Bennett to join her in the near future for a glass or two of Andorian ale. If she wants to know more about the "culture" of the ship, these two officers are the ones who would know.

Rachel notices that Dr. Brownlock is standing by himself. She walks over to him and says, "Mind if I join you?"

The Captain buttonholes Dr. Villa at the door and says, "Now, now, Doctor. All work and no play, as you know. I'm sure Nurse Perry will let you know if you're needed in Sickbay. Please stay." Villa shrugs, smiles and complies, helping herself to a glass of Dorwinion cider.

Delaney's ears perk up at the overheard Dorwinion Cider. He has never heard of it but the name intrigues him due to his love of a certain ancient book known as the Lord of the Rings. He makes his way over, "Captain, forgive me, did you say Dorwinion cider? If so could you tell me something about it?"

While they spoke, Jeremi started to sense something familiar about Dr Noel. She began to study the doctor's face carefully, all while without missing a beat in their conversation, hoping to recall what that something familiar was.

Singh tells Delaney, "Dorwinion is a Class M world that, if I remember correctly, was colonized about a decade ago and has a very good climate for orchards and vineyards. I bought several cases of wine and cider from there earlier this year. I don't know about the source of its name; I'm sure the Library Computer could tell you."

Fujishiro cheerfully flits from conversation to conversation, intent on befriending all. She talks a fair bit with Cheverez and Delaney, trying to steer the conversation toward her interest in sensors, but gives up when they start plumbing the technical depths of replication. She speaks with Villa, Noel and Brownlock a while; her secondary education was in part medical, certainly enough to keep up with the light conversation here.

She of course spends longer with Roble and Hayes, eagerly discussing the latest science papers and reports. It's clear she is extremely focused on science in general and her projects in specific, mostly involving various types of radiation and novel applications of them. She seems more concerned about access to lab resources and the ship's computer and sensors than rank or position.

An astute observer will notice that Fujishiro eagerly tries the different beverages as they are served, but hardly tries more than a sip of each. Water seems to be her drink of choice.

When Dr. Brownlock didn't answer her right away, Ens. Hayes tried once again to engage him in conversation. He seemed a bit uncomforable with this whole dinner party thing. Some Starfleet officers were more suited to social activities than others.

"Have you been to Sickbay yet?" Rachel asked, hoping that would get the conversation going.

She watched Ens. Fujishiro making the rounds and chatting with everyone. And Dr. Villa attempting an early exit.

Brownlock blinked and realized someone was speaking to him. "Oh, sorry Ensign. I guess I was a little distracted. Yes, I had the grand tour. Quite a step up from the last ship I was on. I'm really looking forward to working down there."

"And you? What kind of facilities does a Xenosociologist have on this ship?"

Ens. Hayes chuckled and took another sip of wine. She was very rarely asked about her work -- a growing field in the Federation and Starfleet.

"Mostly a huge computer database with every well known and obscure piece of information on alien cultures."

Rachel paused for a moment. She didn't want to overwhelm the good doctor with too much at once.

"I'm currently working on a research project involving xenophobia."

You are asked to take your seats, and the stewards serve dinner at the Wardroom’s large, long table, which is covered by a crisp white linen tablecloth. Well-polished silver, fine china bearing the Starfleet arrowhead, and fluted Rigellian crystal glassware show that the Yorktown senior staff knows how to entertain when the occasion arises. After the meal – a crisp salad, baked Pacifican shad, and green beans – is cleared away, Saurian brandy is passed around, although some of you choose other beverages. Then Singh nods to Delaney, the junior officer present. The young Assistant Chief Engineer rises, glass in hand, to propose the traditional first toast of a shipboard dinner: “The United Federation of Planets!”

You all stand and repeat “The Federation!,” and drink.

The Captain then offers the traditional second toast: “The ship!”

    “The ship!” say all.

After a round of other toasts, you sit and Singh says, “This is an auspicious day on which to welcome our newest officers. It is October 19. On this day in 1781, the British forces under Lord Cornwallis surrendered to the combined American and French forces commanded by Gen. George Washington, bringing an end to the siege at Yorktown, Virginia, the last major battle of the American Revolution. This ship – your ship – is the latest in a long and distinguished line named after that great victory, so I’m glad that you’re all here, today of all days.”

She takes a sip of her Saurian brandy. “Now that you have joined our crew, perhaps our new officers would like to know more of what is expected of them, and so I will tell you. You will, of course, attend all senior staff meetings – and speak up! Rank and seniority are no guarantee of wisdom; the First Officer, department chiefs and I will, I’m sure, have as much to learn from you as you from us. If you have an idea or an opinion, let’s hear it. You will hereafter form the nucleus of the Yorktown’s landing parties. Don’t be afraid to use your brains and to take the initiative. You will regularly stand watches on the Bridge. Those of you other than Dr. Brownlock who don’t already have your Bridge Command Duty Officer qualification will earn it in the next few months, and the First Officer will give you each a training schedule. Mr. Pourtash, I know you already have your BCDO, so you may be taking a turn in the big chair sooner than you thought.”

She looks around. “All right. Any other questions or comments?”

Delaney, "I look forward to the BCDO training, I was part way through in on the USS Ganymede and hoped for a chance to complete it on the Yorktown. Thank you for the welcome and opportunity to work on this great ship. I know little of the battle but will read up on it. I already have a book on the aircraft carrier by the name that helped to turn the war in favor the US. Is there any other interesting history on the name worth looking into?"

Collins smiled and raised her glass "The Captain!" BCDO training already? she thought, I'll have my own ship before I'm 33!

Ens. Hayes couldn't wait for her first landing party as a member of the Yorktown crew. This is why she joined Starfleet. To explore the unknown and discover anything and everything!

She took a few sips of brandy and sighed. BCDO.... Not her cup of tea, but she'd do her best. Perhaps Lt. Thalen could be of some help in this area.

"Not from me, Captain. Thank you for the fine meal and the chance to meet so many officers socially," thanks Fujishiro.

"Landing parties, hmm?" pondered Brownlock. "Nice change of pace from the sterile walls of Sickbay. This posting is looking up every day."

Fujishiro grins at Brownlock's bit of humor.

"Sickbay isn't all that bad," Dr. Villa protested, but Brownlock could tell from her expression and her mock-serious tone that she was laughing along with him.

Singh smiled and said, "Mr. Delaney, there've been several good books about the Battle of Yorktown, and the ships named after it, written over the centuries. I'll get you a short reading list, if you like. But I suspect that the First Officer and the Chief Engineer will be keeping you a bit busy otherwise."

"That is true, Captain," said Vargas, lifting his glass to her. He turns to you six and says quietly, "I will see you all at 0745 hours tomorrow, just before you begin your first watch. Meet me in Conference Room 1 at that time, if you please." You all of course agree.

By now it is almost 2200 hours (10pm). The dinner party soon breaks up, and people begin drifting out with murmured farewells and quiet laughter. The Captain and First Officer sit down for a last brandy together. As you leave, you find that the lights in the corridors are already dimmed for shipboard "night." Bennett and Thalen are sharing a private joke near the turbolift doors. The ship seems quieter, although you know that, as always, at least a third of the crew is on duty.

Do you want to do anything else before turning in for the night?

Ens. Hayes, much too excited for sleep, heads for the Arboretum on Deck 22.

The Arboretum is a long compartment about three times the size of the Bridge; no one else is there at the moment. A variety of flowering or edible plants from Earth and about a dozen other worlds grows there. There is an herb garden maintained by crewmembers who prefer to cook their own food, and the Captain has a small plot of rose bushes that she maintains. Full-spectrum lighting (now dimmed) and overhead water and nutrient dispensers ensure a healthy yield. There are several benches for those who prefer just to sit and enjoy the smells and sights; it is a very pleasant place to visit.

The prospect of going back to his room and potentially being subjected to more friendly questions leaves Faraz a bit queasy for a variety of reasons, but he wants to get his sleep, so simply goes back to his quarters.

Delany says his goodnights, takes a quick trip to the engine room to check on the tracking of the current harmonics of the dilithium crystals that he set up earlier and heads for bed. He goes to sleep reading about the Battle of Yorktown from the ship's library as just a way to gain some familiarity.

All's well in Engineering when Delaney drops by. Sasok is studying when you return to your cabin; he asks how your evening went.

Pourtash's cabinmate, Ens. Trigorin, is out when you return; he comes back about an hour later and soon goes to bed himself, trying to remain quiet so as not to wake you.

Fujishiro, with her science lab station more or less ready to go, simply heads back to her quarters for a nights rest.

Collins heads down to the Gym, hoping to run into Ens. Cooper again, and later returns to her quarters. She enters quietly so as not to disturb Ens. Terezis' either sleep or reading, and gets ready for a restful sleep.

Fujishiro falls asleep before Hayes returns from her visit to the Arboretum.

Collins doesn't see Cooper in the Gym or other rec areas, unfortunately. Terezis arrives back at the same time as you. She asks if you had a good time at dinner, and if you now want to get a nightcap.

Collins politely declines the invite, and asks for a raincheck. It has been a very long day and Jeremi is exhausted
