Thanks! My favorite TOS movie moment is when Dr. McCoy is in one of our "modern" hospitals and he's so disgusted with how barbaric it is!

WES - I'd like to make a suggestion - Could you separate your characters by paragraph, please?

That's a good suggestion. I've done so for your two previous posts, if that's all right with you, WES.

Thanks so much for the suggestion, anyrose. Good idea. Will try to comply. To be honest, I thought I was doing that, but I guess my sentences must "bunch" together when I post them? Not sure. Still trying to figure out all this computer, internet, tech stuff. Please keep the ideas and suggestions coming everyone. I need all the help I can get! And they are always welcome with my thanks.

Would you, GM & Mod Extraordinaire, please edit my post so that Collins doesn't come off as a doofus?

OK, will do. But if, in the future, you (or your character) doesn't know something, just ask another character or query the Library Computer. I'd prefer that to rewriting your posts. No biggy.

I'm going to be traveling over the Independence Day weekend and beyond, so let's take a week off. I'll next post in the game thread on Fri. July 8. Best wishes to you all.

I gotta ask - how much "game time" has actually elapsed? A week? 10 days?

About three weeks, as I figure it. But there's some wiggle room.

If this were a soap opera, any kids born to Yorktown crewmembers since you came aboard would now be ready to begin their studies at Starfleet Academy!

Just checking in to note that if you'd like another player, or if a position opens up, I'd love to be considered. I haven't been reading the thread lately, or I'd have posted months ago when there was was actually an opening. Thanks!

Thanks for your interest, Appleciders! Let me give it some thought and discuss it with a current player who has been considering developing a new character, and I'll let you know in the next few days, I hope.

    Speaking of which....

WES has decided she'd rather not keep playing Dr. Brownlock. She's developed a new doctor character whom you'll all meet in our next mission. She'll also play Ens. Hayes, as needed, esp. when Hayes's xenosociological skills would come in handy. Dr. Brownlock will, I expect, be transferred off the ship.

Appleciders, you may develop and play a new character. Please read the game thread up to now to familiarize yourself with what we've done so far. I'll ask our other players to suggest possible shipboard roles for this new character - what kind of young officer would be useful and/or interesting to have along from here on out? Please post your thoughts here within the next 72 hours, and then Appleciders and I will discuss it further.

P.S. If there are any Mello lurkers who'd like to weigh in, I'd be glad to hear from you, too.

A very warm welcome to Appleciders! I was just looking over our cast of characters. Hard to find something that hasn't been covered. My thought would be to let Appleciders decide what type of character to play, then see how it might fit in with the rest of our crew. Perhaps a cartographer or astronomer? Something to do with star systems and planets?

I think I'm going to have to go on a hiatus. I just don't have reliable internet access at work any more (I work with computers on a dedicated network). I can check in briefly only about once or twice a week. And it's hard to think up something more than minimal to post in the available time.

If such low participation is enough for the moderator and other players, I can continue, otherwise it's better to withdraw. Fujishiro will probably work better as an NPC, but I've written up enough about her that another player could take over.

As I look at the crew manifest, I agree that the crew seems pretty full; there's a PC in every department, and I don't want to steal anyone's thunder. The one possible place I can see to fit in another Star Fleet officer is in Science; there's no one currently filling a biology or xenobiology position; Medical is kind of handling that, but I could bounce between the two departments. I'd be happy to play a non-commissioned specialist; someone who's of comparable importance in the Federation but not a member of Star Fleet. The thing I'm having trouble with is coming up with a non-Star Fleet person who'd be on recurring missions. A diplomat might be on an intentional First Contact mission, or on a diplomatic embassy to Klingons or Romulans, but wouldn't be on a simple exploration mission. A cartographer wouldn't be on a diplomatic mission.

I have a couple of questions about setting: first, I'm a devotee of TNG but I haven't watched much TOS, so I really only know Kirk and company through the TOS movies. How big is the Federation at this time? Is Starfleet still dominated by humans? What series regular alien races have been contacted? Is the Federation at war or peace or uneasy ceasefire with the Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, or other races? Second, is the tone Gene Roddenberry-style idealistic, or a little darker and grittier like DS9?

Pleonast, please stay involved! I'd rather you play less often when you can, than that you withdrawn entirely.

Appleciders, please read the very first post of this thread (with info on the ship, the crew and the rules; I just edited and updated it), and then read the first post of the game thread. That will answer some of your questions. (Of course I'd still like you to read the entire game thread). A biologist or xenobiologist character could be cool; in fact, in the very next mission there will be need of one. Your character will be a Starfleet (please note the spelling, BTW) ensign, not a noncom or a civilian. Since our PCs are, by order of the Captain, the nucleus of most USS Yorktown landing and boarding parties, your character will be going on missions even if there's not necessarily an immediate need for his or her area of specialization.

If you haven't watched much ST:TOS up to now, I encourage you to check out some episodes (I don't own them myself, but can get the DVDs through my local library). My personal favorites, some of which have influenced my running of this game, include "Journey to Babel," "The Trouble with Tribbles," "The City on the Edge of Forever," "Amok Time," "Court Martial," "This Side of Paradise," "Mudd's Women," "The Conscience of the King," "Shore Leave," "Space Seed," "The Devil in the Dark," "Mirror, Mirror," "The Doomsday Machine," "Patterns of Force," "The Ultimate Computer," "Bread and Circuses," "Errand of Mercy," "The Deadly Years," "The Enterprise Incident," "The Tholian Web" and "All Our Yesterdays." If you want me to just recommend three or four, I suppose I could open up a vein and do that!

I have my own opinion as to the tone of the game so far, of course, but for now I'll let others address that.

    I think we're halfway between Roddenberry-land and DS9-ville

eta Another good episode is "A Piece Of The Action". But don't watch "Lights Of Zatar"

OK. So I'll tentatively plan to create a character in the Science or Medical departments who specializes in Xenobiology. I know that Starfleet is primarily human at this juncture, but there are only three listed non-humans so far (all of them in Engineering, funnily enough) so I'd like to play a non-human. After some browsing, I think that I'd like to play a Tellarite, an Andorian, or a Coridanite. Tellarites and Andorians are both founding members of the Federation, so they should definitely be available, but Coridanites only successfully joined the Federation in 2268, one year before the events in the game thread. I like the idea that my character as a Coridanite would be one of, if not the first Coridanite in Starfleet. I realize that a single year is not enough for a cadet to complete training at the Academy, so I'd have to assume a reason for acceptance as a non-Federation member. According to Memory Alpha, that can happen if a Starfleet officer recommends an individual, but it references DS9, so I don't know for sure if the policy dates back as far as 2269. Basically, I'd love to play a Coridanite, but if the chain of logic allowing that is too strained, I won't be too disappointed.

I'm midway through the game thread, and I'll try to finish up soon, but my "weekend" starts Monday, so I may not be done for a little while. The entire Star Trek canon is available on Netflix right now, so I'm browsing through TOS episodes.

Hang in there, Pleonast! You're a member of our crew and it wouldn't be the same without you.

Appleciders, I'm a TOS newbie myself. I know a lot about TNG and DS9. It really helped me when I joined this wonderful group to watch all of the TOS episodes. I also talked to friends and family who were big TOS fans and knew much more than I did. Looking forward to your participation with us!

When you're asked directly in the game thread by a superior officer, you should report what your character has done or learned, through dialogue, i.e.:

Collins reports to Vargas, "Sir, I have done and learned the following things in my investigation. First, I ...."

Some thoughts: Collins hasn't spoken to any of the three other Security officers who were in and out of the Brig on the night in question. She hasn't searched or scanned the Brig. She hasn't reviewed internal surveillance records. Her conversation over drinks with Hayes on how to deal with the Eruunlac didn't lead anywhere. I'm sure you can think of other things to do.
