Dang, and now we're seeing the difference between American he-man Wild West tactics vs. British our-bobbies-don't-even-carry-guns tactics. Two different approaches to fighting corruption: Graham is about doing whatever it takes to tough out the baddies, Rangin is about not becoming one in the process. As Spock would say: Fascinating!

Heh. So would Rangin feel this story is either the best of both worlds or the worst of both worlds - At least back in the day the park rangers in the city I was working could write citations but did not have side arms or powers of arrest. One guy told me how he came across a whole bunch of folks drinking in a park one night and told them "look, it's $50 a can fine for beer, I'd hate to write a ticket that big, so why don't you just pour it out and go home and we'll forget about this whole thing?" I said holy crap, $50 a can is a hell of a fine. He replied that he totally made that number up, it was way less, -- because opening the discussion that way made them more likely to comply and avoid a big mess of one form or another.

    or ?

It didn't involve acts of violence and the threat of people losing their jobs, so the above story is more the Rangin way, not the Graham way. Try writing the same thing again with violence and threats and see how it comes out. I was also going for more of a corrupt police state for Coridan, Britain isn't nearly corrupt enough

Also, I'm surprised Graham thinks they are all friends, they have only known him for a couple of days or so in game time. Admittedly its been a few months IRL.

    Rangin & Graham's love child - Kwai-Chang Kaine???

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwai_Chang_Caine

Graham likes--perhaps one might say 'assumes'--professional camaraderie. (Which might be compensation for his estrangement from family, or just a reflection of his obliviousness to subtle emotional signals, or both...)

Dang, if Rangin keeps this up he's going to top the list of Collins's most hated colleagues. And he's an alien, too.

Collins should retort by asking Rangin if he was weaned properly

The difference is, Rangin is being polite about it all, and not petulant and didactic like a certain Elasian we all know.

My guess is Collins is one of those women who just can't stand being corrected by another woman. Kylah was just as polite as Rangin is when she asked Collins about her blunder with the watch schedule -- remember that Collins can't read Kylah's thoughts the way you can. She said please and made requests and so on.

And meanwhile Graham, who's really acting like a sore loser just because "Science Guy" challenged Graham's macho "I Know Everything Because I'm The Grizzled Old Police Dude" facade, is totally saying he's gonna go off on his own and thus ignoring Collins's orders that he and Rangin go to the security office.

I hope against hope that Collins reminds Graham that she told him to go with Rangin.

Because maybe Graham is bummed out by the personality issues and wondering why Rangin is going out of his way to bust his ovaries

...Or maybe Graham just wants to get busy without some hippie peacenik armchair quarterbacking him

This is awesome. Without actually disagreeing Collins and Graham are getting set up on opposite sides of the fence - to her, Rangin is being polite, while Kylah drives her crazy, while to Graham, Kylah may flip out but just as quickly (at least from his perspective) let's things go and gets gets "back to normal." In contrast he's interpreting Rangin's doggedness in such a way as to wonder whether T'Var needs to do emergency surgery to get the stick out of Rangin's @**.

Hmmm, and the latter is precisely why he needs that hippie peacenik by his side! Graham doesn't seem to realize how presumptuous his thought processes are--only he knows best how to deal with corruption, only he understands what evildoers can do. Meanwhile Rangin's lived his whole life on Coridan and managed to survive what must've been plenty of terrible situations without losing his moral compass. But since he's not a security expert, his opinions don't count to Graham.

Maybe that's why Collins and Graham are such peas in a pod. Neither of them wants to learn from anyone outside their own "tribe."

Speaking purely as a reader, I think it's because of their differences that Rangin/Graham would make a fascinating team if they do get to go on watch together. They'd certainly have very interesting conversations.

In post 1110 in the main thread I see that saying "nod" is ambiguous given Collins' question - the intention was to say Graham is nodding-a-single-nod-of-acknowledgement-of-the-order, not nodding "yes I have objections." Sorry about that.

I think you are right... I have some things I know Graham has tee'd up to say based on the latest events, and I can't predict Rangin's reaction. But am quite interested in what it will be...

Well, it's pretty much a given that you'll be asking him whether Kylah really is in a torrid relationship with T'Var and Ferguson.

If you can't predict Rangin's likely reactions, I'm probably playing him right

Actually, I just hope Appleciders is happy with the way Velir Rangin has developed. It was his character after all.

XP takes on a whole new meaning. Or maybe XXXP.

Anyway it's just kissing! Romance, not porn. Nothing regular old TV wouldn't show.

Only if that channel is Nickelodeon. I mean, there's been no mention of tongues or anything!

I think it seems more explicit than it is because you're reading Kylah's reactions rather than just seeing it from the "outside," so to speak. But Kylah's responses are important so...

ROTFL. Oh, I do love Rangin. It's like if Sam Spade were partnered with Detective Foyle. Spade ventures into his usual hard-bitten jokesy patois with the security dude, and Foyle rolls his eyes and says "yes, can we please get to the point, is the bloody admiral okay or what?"

I may be missing a subtlety of protocol here -- is there any reason Collins can't just ask the front desk to page Hardin so she can talk to him and give him a heads-up re: the security issue? Kylah already left a message but since she's just an Ensign she didn't try to speak with him directly; Collins certainly could.

Then why are they former employees? Either they found a better position--indicating something was probably not ideal in the old job--or they were fired. Now it's possible that they all adored WR&R but were just offered massive sums of money at some new place, forcing them to leave this idyll known as OCIII. But... it is worth noting when no one has a single complaint about an ex-employer.

Heck even Rangin seems freaked out by the prospect of being stuck in Paradise. (I look forward to finding out what that's about!)

Everyone has at least one, possibly tiny or insignificant, bad thing to say about their former employement "the snack machine in the break room was never fully stocked" "they were never able to properly adjust the thermostat so that everyone was happy" "they used to give us turkeys and booze along with the bonus checks at Christmas time - the last few years, it was only the checks"

It's just Graham diligently doing his job granted in perhaps a paranoid and overprotective sort of way - when you're as hard bitten as he is, you do whatever it takes.

Note that Thalen said, "We've located six former WR&R staffers who worked at the resort, and none have any complaints of note. Nothing on the public newsnets of that sort, either" (emphasis added). The landing party is on a mission, and Thalen is not going to waste their time with any mention of snack machines, themostats or the equivalent.

You gotta admit it would be awesome if the big scandal in this mission is that the WR&R crew are evilly filling the snack machines with raisins and tofu bars instead of M&Ms. Wilson would have to worry less about Fastolfe than getting backstabbed by his own disgruntled staffers.

    Not unless Collins asks.

Just make sure she does it in earshot of Kylah & Rangin.

Heh. Well, Kylah would for once be on Collins's side here. She doesn't normally believe in paradise.

How much do I love that Rangin's first instinct is to get angry at Graham? Gallant to the last. I hope there's some jeaousy in there too, but even if not, it's a very gentlemanly response.

If this were a soap or sitcom, Rangin, upon seeing the shadowy figures combined as one, and hearing the, what? pleasure? in Kylah's voice, would feel jilted and jealous and immediately hook up with the first female who smiles at him because, "THEY WERE ON A BREAK!!!!"

Rangin? And a married woman?! Never! I'll buy T'Var though.

And T'Var will obviously be feeling jilted because Kylah's two-timing her! Oh wait, that's only in Graham's head...
