Default Star Trek RPG - Setup thread

    Starship USS Yorktown, NCC-1717

    Crew Roster

    Command
Commanding Officer: Capt. Sundri Parvinder Singh. A Sikh woman of late middle age, she is stocky but fit, dark-skinned, with a plain face, warm smile, and black hair just going to gray. She speaks in a cultured, New Punjabi-accented voice, and has a friendly, easy manner and bright eyes that miss nothing. The first woman named to command a Starfleet vessel typically wears a gold uniform shirt with the two-and-a-half stripes of her rank, and black pants and boots. She can speak pretty fair Japanese.
Lt. Cecilia E. Bennett, Navigator and acting New Crew Liaison Officer; a slim, elegant young Englishwoman. Shares quarters with Dr. T'Var.
Lt. Kendin, Helmsman, a lanky Algolian male. Commanded the prize crew of the merchantman Sarafina.
Lt. Guillaume Vaudreuil, Command Subsystems Officer and Relief Helmsman. A tall, middle-aged French officer of average build with a graying beard.

Yeoman/1 Masum Topçu. Captain's Yeoman; Turkish male.
Spec/1 Doug Bentley, Phaser Control technician. American male.
Spec/2 Jonathan Carr, Phaser Control technician. Alpha Centauri VII male.

    Security
First Officer and Chief of Security: Cmdr. Pablo Echevarria Vargas. A tall, balding Peruvian with an aquiline nose and an aristocratic air. Vargas is a difficult superior: he expects excellence in his subordinates, demands results, and is accustomed to getting his way. He is also the ship's reigning chess champion.

Ens. Jeanne St. Croix - Also a plainclothes guard on OC3. From Rouen, France.
Ens. Terrance Thayer "Two Tons" Rawlings - The biggest human in Starfleet uniform Kylah has ever seen, a head taller and quite a bit broader and more muscular than Graham himself; it looks like it took about an acre of red duryon fabric to make his shirt. He is a black American with a shaved head and goatee.

    The Rules
    (First posted July 20, 2010)

    1. Have fun!

    2. Your posts should just be about what your own character is thinking or doing. Let other players write about what their characters are up to, and I’ll handle the rest of the Universe (it’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it).

2a. Write using third person (except in dialogue) and mention your character, even if only by last name, at least once per post.

2b. You can say your character is going to try to do something, or (if he or she has the authority to do so) order another character to do something, but then leave it to me as to how it turns out. If you write, for instance, something very simple and easy like "[My character's name] brushes her teeth," that's fine. Or even "She fires her phaser," that's fine too. But "She fires her phaser and hits and kills the bad guy" presumes too much. If the action is complicated or depends upon skill, chance, luck or cooperation by others, just write what you're trying to do, and not the end result.

    3. Respect the continuity of previous posts in this game, and of Star Trek generally. Don’t create or refer to other characters, planets, ships etc. not already established in ST or in the game without checking with me first.

    4. This is a role-playing game, and I encourage you to write about anything which gives further meaning and depth to your character, both on- and off-duty.

    5. Only ST televised episodes and movies are canon for purposes of this thread. The J.J. Abrams movies, Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and any ST books over the years, are not canon for us, except to the extent that I incorporate particular elements of them (for instance, from ST:TAS, the existence of Edoans, and Spock’s well-developed background from the episode “Yesteryear”).

    6. There is no Rule 6!

    7. The Game Master (GM) may introduce additional rules, as needed.

    8. Please do your best to ensure correct spelling and grammar.

    9. Use ST in-jokes sparingly.

    10. Other than agreeing for it to appear on Mellophant in the first place, you retain copyright to everything you write.

    11. Please spell out ranks ("Commander") if referred to without a name, but abbreviate if immediately followed by a name (“Capt. Kirk,” “Mr. Spock” or "Cmdr. Scott"). Here are the proper rank abbreviations in ascending order: Spec., Ens., Lt. JG, Lt., Lt. Cmdr., Cmdr., Capt., Fleet Capt., Cmdre., Rear Adm., Vice Adm., Adm., Fleet Adm.

    12. Please check the setup and game threads, and post in the game thread, at least every other day.

    13. Don’t use the “Reply with quote” function in the game thread, to preserve narrative flow.

    14. When a player has, despite three warnings, persisted in conduct which the GM has asked him or her to stop, the GM may discharge the player from the game. The player will thereafter not post in either the setup or game threads; if the player does so, such posts may be removed by the GM. The former player may ask the GM to be reinstated no earlier than one month after discharge. The GM has sole discretion as to warnings, discharge and reinstatement.

    15. Any questions? PM or email me if you wish privacy, but if it’s something that you think might interest the other players, by all means post it here in the setup thread.

    ---------------------------------------------------

    Invitation to play
    (First posted July 6, 2010)

In one week, I'll begin a Star Trek role-playing game (RPG) here on Mellophant, along the lines of What Exit?'s highly successful Lord of the Rings D&D campaign. The rules would be a blend of FASA, Decipher and Last Unicorn ST games' rules for easy, seamless play. Players will be newly-assigned junior officers aboard a Starfleet ship not already centrally featured on ST. I'll help you create your own player character (PC). The Captain and First Officer would be non-player characters (NPCs), at least to start.

Sometime in the next week, please post here:

    1. If you want to play, what species, gender and shipboard assignment (any and all) would interest you. I'd like to have at least one player in each shipboard department, if possible, so that the player characters (PCs) can easily form a landing party/away team, or at least the nucleus of one, but please don't feel limited by what other potential players post here. Humans are preferred (they apparently make up the majority of Starfleet, after all), but just about any Federation member species may be chosen. If you go with a Human, what racial or ethnic group would you like to play?

    2. In what era would you prefer the game to be set? Mention as many as apply; also tell me if there's an era of ST for which you have a particular aversion:

    ENT
    TOS
    TAS
    TOS movies
    TNG
    DS9
    VGR
    TNG movies
    Since VGR (ST's "present day")

    3. Any other questions, comments or reactions.

The game will not be set in the same alternate timeline or multiverse as last year's J.J. Abrams-directed ST movie, since there will very likely be sequels and I'd rather not get whipsawed on canon, continuity, etc.

Several Mellophant members and other online friends have already expressed an interest in taking part in our game. I can't guarantee that everyone who posts here will be able to play initially, but there will be a waitlist for any extra folks. I'm thinking of starting with six players, but may add more.

    Thanks for your interest!

    1) Male, Human or Vulcan, Engineering or Science. Ethnic group doesn't matter, maybe generic 22nd century brownish person from an L-5 or Lunar Colony.
    2) I greatly prefer TOS
    3) No questions yet.

    I'll play.

I can do: (in order of preference)
    Male, ferengi, business owner
    Female, vulcan, wife
    Female human, first officer
    Female, betazoid, security chief

I've watched all of DS9, TNG, Voyager and all of TOS, I think.

I haven't watched any of Enterprise and most of the movies.

I haven't played an RPG before, so I'll learn as we go along.

Thanks. There would be no Ferengi business owner aboard the ship; as I wrote, everyone will be Starfleet officers. And the First Officer will be an NPC, at least to start, as I wrote. Of all the ST you've watched, do you have any preference(s) as a backdrop for the game?

    1. Male. Human of Persian extraction. Helmsman.

    2. ENT, TOS, but I'm flexible.

    3. None at the moment, other than pleasure you're going to be doing this.

Human (Japanese) Female. Science preferred, Engineering acceptable, Tactical, not so much. Basing this character concept after my character in Star Trek Online, for which I have a detailed background setup. Rather than cluttering this thread (and leaving something for us to talk about in-character), I'll pm Heir directly for consultation.

I prefer TNG or later, but I have nothing against TOS. My character concept should work in any ST time period. I've watched 99% of TOS and TNG, and about half of DS9, VGR and ENT. I've seen the movies, at least the earlier ones, but not all the later ones.

    Hi there!

Male, half Human, half Betazoid, medical officer.

I've seen pretty much all episodes of TNG and later so I'd be most comfortable one of them.

Okay... Vulcan male, medical or sciences department, engineering possible. Security feasible if I can roleplay a character who logically concludes that ends justify means.

No specific preference as to setting.

    1. Species: a) Edoan b) Vulcan c) Benzite (genetically altered to breathe N2/O2 d) Human
    Gender: Male
    Assignment: a) Science b) Engineering

    2. Era: Earlier, preferably like TOS, TAS, ENT. No aversions; limited DS9 knowledge, but I've seen the rest.

    3. I've done a bit of D&D and Hero (15 years ago) but no RPGs. I don't know the rules mentioned (The rules would be a blend of FASA, Decipher and Last Unicorn ST games' rules for easy, seamless play).

    I'd like to try!

I didn't even know I already had an account here!

Mellophant is pretty much what is left of DoMeBo. We are basically a Game Board and a large Chat Room with a small message board inbetween and a nice front page. The Gamers are a mix of game only and active messageboard members.

So welcome and take a look around or just enjoy the game.
You are also welcome to start games here. One bonus, we can at least post pictures in thread here for maps and etc.

    OK, let's try this again.

Would Female, betazoid, security officer work? Or any other officer is OK with me too.

I'm not sure what you mean by backdrop. Like what time period as to the series? If so, I like the later series TNG and later because there's more cool stuff invented and more species discovered. In TOS I don't think there were betazoids yet. And no holodecks and stuff. Is that what you meant, or am I way off-track?

    1. Yes, that could work.

    2. My "backdrop" question referred to question 2 in the original posting of this thread. If we go with a TOS-era game, I don't think that would necessarily preclude a Betazoid character. Although they weren't shown in TOS, the year that Betazed joined the Federation has never been established: http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Betazed. It's a big quadrant and we might just not have met any aboard the Enterprise.

We never met a Deltan until ST:TMP and we know hundreds of races were part of the Federation already in TOS. A Betazoid should not be impossible. A Klingon or Gorn would be messing with known facts but not a Betazoid. If we go with TAS and the old FASA game we also get Kzin I believe.

If we're going to have Vulcans and female officers, a Kzinti on the crew would be...interesting to say the least.

FASA was a game company that work and sold a Star Trek Role Playing Game in the 80s and 90s. It is defunct I believe.

TAS = The Animated Series: Some consider is non-canon, most of us don't really care.
    TOS = The Original Series.
    TNG = The Next Generation
    TMP = The Motion Picture
    etc.

For those who might not be as "Trekkie" as others, an excellent Star Trek reference is the Memory Alpha wiki.

Thanks to both of you. Sometimes I think I might be a Trekkie since I've watched several series multiple times, but I don't know near as much as a true fan.

Hey you probably know more than I do, I really only know TOS and the movies. I know a lot about these but nothing compared to Elendil's Heir and so many others.

    1. Sigma Iotian - Jeremi Collins - Security (or astrometrics if there are too many cops)

    (helluva Parisi Squares player)
    2. TNG
    3. Where might I find the basic rules for the gaming system you're using - I've only ever GURP'd

FASA, Last Unicorn and Decipher rulebooks are all out of print now, I think, but can be found on Amazon, eBay, and the like. You don't need to own any to play the game, though.

It's been too long since I've read any Niven - what's the salad issue? Also - TAS had it wrong - that's not at all what a Kzin should like - Kzinti should be furrier, like feral cats

They're deeply revolted by eating plant matter. This is one of the things that makes them strongly biased against Vulcan males, since they're showing their weakness through vegetarianism. If you're ever trying to keep one of their telepaths from reading your mind, just picture yourself eating a big yummy salad. It'll make them physically ill.

That is, there will be no Kzinti on the crew of my ship. And no more barfy smilies, please.

I'm still waiting to hear from two Trekker friends who just signed up for Mellophant but have been having problems establishing their accounts. When they've posted, I'll announce the initial set of players, and we'll get started with character generation.

Yes. As I wrote in the OP, "Several Mellophant members and other online friends have already expressed an interest in taking part in our game. I can't guarantee that everyone who posts here will be able to play initially, but there will be a waitlist for any extra folks. I'm thinking of starting with six players, but may add more."

I´m not at home right now, so I can´t play immediately, but I´d love to get on the waitlist- Human from Tycho City, and either engineering or a diplomacy specialist. My preference is TNG, since I´m most familiar with it, but anything´s fine.

    Hi Everyone!

Had a few transporter troubles. Thanks to all who helped me with the posting problem. Much appreciated!

Fav ST would be TNG and DS9. Never watched ST Enterprise. Not a big fan of the movies.

My character: human, female, social sciences, anthropology and intercultural relations.

    More later.

Thank you, everyone, for your interest. It was very hard picking just six players. If you weren't selected, I'm sorry; I just don't think I could keep the game interesting for more people at one time. I'll put you on the waitlist for any future vacancies, if you like. You're also welcome to continue to post in this thread with questions, thoughts or observations once the game is underway.

Our initial players and their departments aboard the TOS-era Constitution-class starship USS Yorktown will be:

    Zuul - Command
    What Exit? - Engineering
    anyrose - Security
    Pleonast - Sciences
    WES - Sciences
    ds9writer - Medical

I'll be sending character-development PMs to our players shortly. Ideally I'd like to start the first adventure early next week.

    Thanks again.
