Graham is sad that TOS technology does not make it possible to surreptitiously record what's going on in Collin's and Kylah's minds. Because if it did, he could take that recording to Vargas and be like "Dude, I may be a depressive drunk, but by comparison I am among the most stable damn crew you have on this boat..."

HEY. Vigilantes in glass torture chambers shouldn't throw stones.

No I would definitely say that there are some neurotic head cases on this mission. Rangin and T'Var are the only stable folks around.

    They do indeed.

Here's some early ST:TNG makeup and hair test footage:

Deanna had some terrible hair in those early shots - and Geordi almost looked like he could be part of the Jackson 5 (at 3:41)!

Rangin is hilariously upbeat. I'm in a crabby mood today and I want to take a slug at him!

Question for Elendil's Heir: Would T'Var have given Kylah a prescription/pills, or just a single hypospray? Considering we're talking about ongoing anxiety (a subject I'm sadly familiar with), I can't imagine a one-time shot would solve anything, even in the 23rd century.

Although if so, to quote Liz Lemon: I want to go to there.

    Love Rangin's blithe spirits. Heh.

As to Kylah, probably a prescription (daily shots) for an ongoing problem like that, plus counseling with Dr. Noel.

Okay after that curve ball I had to delete my post and rewrite it. Yowsa.

I just had an amusing thought that would've gone into my post if I totally wanted to ruin the vibe.

Maybe the worst part of the nightmare was that Collins was now Second in Command.

Netflix is a big customer of ours, and our company is just starting a chat support channel...this has circulated around work at Warp speed, so to speak, as (as you might expect at a tech company) something totally awesome beyond belief...

Ouchies! Wow, Rangin has some inner snark to him. I didn't think there was much that could rankle him. Maybe he and Kylah are right for each other after all.

    Good save by Collins, though.

I wonder if this Wilson dude is related to Waite?

It would be uncharacteristic of Collins to mention the idea of bringing Fujishiro to the planet and I'm guessing Kylah is to shy? insecure? I hope T'Var brings it up

Yeah, Kylah's real shy! ;D No, I only brought it up to nudge CatInASuit. It was Rangin who came up with the awesome idea in the first place, but when I asked CIAS why Rangin wasn't bringing this up during the mission briefing, s/he mentioned to me that Rangin's waiting for tests before suggesting it and doesn't want to get anyone's hopes up. Rangin's natural modesty and diffidence, I suppose--but IMHO he's gotta speak up at some point sooner rather than later, before the Yorktown is inevitably called away to deal with the Klingon situation and we lose access to Fujishiro.

(The Klingon/Yorktown thing is a total WAG on my part, no insider knowledge! But I figure there's gotta be a reason EH brought up the fact that there's some trouble brewing nearby re: the Klingons and that the Yorktown is the only ship around. Let's call it Chekov's Phaser: You don't mention Klingons in the first act unless you bring them on again in the third. ).

Anyway, since it was only yesterday that Kylah asked Bucci about Fujishiro, and he mentioned she's gonna be shipped back to Earth, this seemed a natural place for Kylah to put two and two together herself. Still, I'd rather defer to Rangin since it was CIAS's brainstorm in the first place. Characterwise, I'm guessing that Kylah is trying very hard to be less pushy and obnoxious to her teammates considering it caused her trouble last time, so she doesn't want to cause offense by superceding either the medical officer or the xenobiologist, especially since she has a crush on the latter.

So... that's my in-game rationale for Kylah's not wanting to mention Fujishiro aloud. Mission #1, desperate-to-prove-herself Kylah would have brought Fujishiro up without a second thought. My meta reason is that I think Rangin should do it since it was CIAS's idea and it's only fair Rangin get the credit.

Ahem. Don't forget Kylah's nightmare, too.

I revised Dr. Anderson's intro to make clear that she's also in Starfleet.

Ooh are you giving Kylah powers of prognostication now? I figured that was a one-off due to Kylah's activities playing both sides of the fence regarding Elas's relationship with the Federation vs. the bumpy-headed* ones.

    * Or smooth-headed, depending on if we're using the TOS template for Klingons. Actually that's a good point: are the Klingons in this game going to be TOS-era or TNG+ era, with honor and operas and so on? Obviously I find the latter much more interesting as enemies, but I don't know if the difference in the culture/physical appearance was ever addressed in canon, aside from "we do not discuss that" from Worf.

I was 50% each Picard, Troi, Riker and LaForge. Kirk? Just 45%.

As for Klingons' physical appearance in a Yorktown adventure... what do you think it should be?

That's a good mixture! Funily enough my next lowest option was Uhura. If you combine Deanna and Uhura, you've got Kylah, so there you go.

I vote for bumpy. But I have a great affinity for TNG and especially DS9 Klingons, so I'm probably too biased.

Klingons should still be smooth headed. They have not yet reversed the genetic modifications to which Worf referred

Oh, was there some genetic modification involved? I don't remember that from the DS9 episode. I thought they purposely kept it vague. Well, if that's the case then yeah, they should be smoothies. But hopefully the Klingon culture will remain closer to the more three-dimensional portrayals we saw once Ron D. Moore got hold of 'em.

I'm in a bit of a role-playing / RPG etiquette quandary. I can think of a few things we could be asking these people, but I really don't think Kylah should be the one to ask them. T'Var, Rangin and Delaney are the better choices. But T'Var just responded to Rangin and didn't ask any questions, so... what do I do? Does Kylah continue to ask and come off like a pain-in-the-ass who's asking things that aren't in her bailiwick, or does she wait and hope that the others think of stuff?

It was during the DS9 flashback to the Tribbles episode. Sisko asked Worf about it and Worf said "we don't like to talk about it"

    I'm looking for the quote

eta: I couldn't find the exact exchange but here's the episode link

Oh yep, right, I remember that--that's the quote I referenced. But I don't recall any genetic engineering or any explanation given. It was basically lampshaded with "Why do you look so different?" "We don't like to talk about it." For all we know there are two kinds of Klingons running around at the same time--the smoothies and the bumpies. Like the Jets and the Sharks.

    "When you're a Bump
    You've cha'Diches galore
From your first Heart of Targ
    Till you reach Sto-Vo-Kor...

    When you're a Bump
    All the smooth-heads will fly
    Keep your bat'leth blade sharp
It's a good day to die!

    The Bumps are in town
    Got no discomendation
    Our missions are clear:
    To end the Federation--
    Assassination!

    Here come the Bumps
    We are warriors all
    May our honor cling on
    Till our enemies fall
    When you're a Bump
    You stay a Bump!"

... And so on. (Major apologies to Sondheim and Bernstein!) Anyway, maybe Kirk & Co. only ever encountered the smoothies?

Thanks EH. Gosh I forgot how much I freakin' love DS9 and how awesome that episode was. Such a loving and clever tribute. So, O'Brien and Bashir take guesses but Worf stonewalls 'em with "We do not discuss it with outsiders." I'm guessing the smoothies are the result of an orgy with Romulans or something dreadfully embarrassing.

Smooth heads for Klingons, rather than Cornish pasty faces.

Besides, Kylah's in comms, so has the best asking voice of all of us .

There was no mention of where we'd be staying, was there? I hadn't thought about it, but back to the ship makes sense. Unless I missed/forgot something that was said in the briefing

I was asked by a player if it's necessary to have seen "This Side of Paradise," and I replied:

You should definitely, if you have the chance, see the episode. It's one of my favorite TOS eps (which is partly why the Yorktown has returned there), and has some great moments. There are some in-jokes and side references that I'm making on this mission that you'd then be better able to appreciate. But it's not necessary to have seen it.

Okiedoke, well, I just watched it. And I have to say... I don't get it. Roddenberry, at least by the time of TNG, was pro-peace, pro-"our culture doesn't need money and we've advanced beyond petty emotions and strife that causes wars." So why is what the colonists were experiencing--happiness and contentment, just living for themselves on the land--such a horrible thing that they absolutely had to be driven out of that self-described paradise?

Yeesh. It felt like a down-with-hippies propaganda episode! From the summary on Memory Alpha I was expecting way worse side effects from the spores. Not just general happiness and "okay we're farmers and builders," but absolute hedonism and lying around doing nothing. Stuff that would justify Kirk saying what a waste their lives were. What I saw instead was a group of people living like the Amish. What's the problem with that? I'm also curious why Bones suddenly turned into Colonel Sanders just because he was happy. Do the spores have some kind of accent enhancer or something? If Graham accidentally ingests some is he suddenly going to sound like one of the Kennedys?

(And Kirk said there was no art. Well! I beg to differ! They at least had some wooden animal carvings on the mantelepiece of this unbelievably-worn-out-considering-it-had-only-been-built-4-years-ago house.)

Don't get me wrong, I understand why the Enterprise crew had to be brought back to their old selves. But the other folks were content. It just seems rather meanspirited to have ruined their fun.

Do I suck for not digging the message here?

As an aside, this is the first time I'm watching Trek in years and I never noticed Spock has gray eyeshadow. What's up with that?

Edited to add: I forgot to mention what a kick I got out of the reference to Starbase 27.

So why is what the colonists were experiencing--happiness and contentment, just living for themselves on the land--such a horrible thing that they absolutely had to be driven out of that self-described paradise?
I think that reflects GR's belief in exploration, seeking to learn, create. etc... I think the GR lens on getting beyond the bad stuff in the TOS timeframe wasn't "sweet, we can veg out" but rather that it made it possible to be able to commit fully to affirmative pursuits (art, five year galactic exploration missions, science and so on...). As I recall Kirk has at various points given speeches to the effect that striving and taking on challenges in one way or another is central to being human.

    Good points all.

Roddenberry certainly thought that humanity wasn't meant to rest comfortably, but to strive, overcome and succeed.

Kirk had a duty as a Starfleet officer to get his crew back and to reestablish control of his ship. (Just how long would the Enterprise stay in orbit, anyway, before plunging into the atmosphere - and perhaps cause terrible environmental damage as it did so)? Had Kirk succumbed with all the others and beamed down, how long before Starfleet sent another ship, I wonder, and how likely would that crew be to fall under the spores' influence, in turn? Not too likely, I suspect.

I agree with your point about Sandoval and the colonists, though. They weren't hurting anybody or breaking the law, and if they wanted to stay under the spores' influence (or be returned to it), I think Kirk would've had to let them. Sandoval himself seemed disappointed in himself for his and the others' torpor ("All those wasted years," I think he says), and perhaps he had the authority to order them all to come with him to Starbase 27 for resettlement elsewhere.
