It's "early next week" (can't get an earlier than Sunday). Could the game start now? (yes, I am impatient, why do you ask?)

Not quite yet. I've only heard from three of our six players as to their Starfleet personnel files (character profiles). Believe me, I'm as eager to get started as you are, anyrose!

Default Looking forward to this journey!

    Hi Everyone.

Been reading the threads with great interest. I'm eager to get started as well.

To be honest, I don't know a lot about TOS, but am willing to learn. Sciences back then, blue uniforms? Females in that mini skirt, right?

I'm new to online RPG gaming, so please be patient as I do my best to keep up with the rest of you. Thanks.

    BTW -- what's a character PM?

Guess that's all for now. Thanks so much for including me!

A PM is a personal message. Click on the words "Control Panel" on the upper left corner of the green bar that goes across the top of your screen, and you'll then see whatever PMs have been sent to you. Click on them and reply as you see fit.

Or, in the upper right corner of your screen, where you see the words "Welcome, WES," you'll see the words "Your notifications." Click on that, and then on "Unread private messages." It'll get you to the same place.

Women may, aboard the Yorktown at least, wear either the uniform dress, or a department-specific colored shirt (gold like Kirk and Sulu for Command, blue like Spock for Sciences and McCoy for Medical, red like Scotty for Engineering, or Uhura for Communications, and also red for Operations and Security) and black pants.

You can see examples of uniforms of this time period. My character will be in the wide-collared mini-dress. I'll post a full-length screenshot when I get a chance. While the pants look fine, if we're going TOS, I want to have that '60s feel. (2260s to be precise. )

Heir, I don't know how you intend to introduce the characters to each other, but since a few of us are ready to go, you could introduce just our characters so we can start interacting in-game.

Oh, and welcome WES! You'll get the hang of this message board soon enough.

Thanks, Pleonast, but I have a particular method of character introduction in mind, and will start the game only when all six are ready to go. Patience, as the saying goes, is a virtue.

ok - according to the Trek-Wiki Pleonast provided, some members of the ops team wore beige. Given Jeremi's unprecedented position as the only (or at least rare) female security personnel, she wear pants and a tunic, same as every other Security team member. Her tunic is beige.

eta - I mean, honestly, how can a gal be effective in defending the ship or her shipmates if she's always worried about that damned mini-skirt riding up?

That's actually "gold", not beige. I know what it looks like, but that's what it's called.

I'm not sure if this'll work, but here's a full-length screenshot. The bridge is 25th century, so ignore it.

I don't worry about the skirt. It's the future, the cloth stays exactly where it's supposed.

Cool graphic, Pleonast! But as I said before, anyrose, all Yorktown Security personnel, including your character, would be in red. Of course the skirt stays in place at all times (and she could always wear pants if she wanted to).

Well, it's made in-game of Star Trek Online, which is an online subscription game*. It's a fun game and you get to captain your own ship, but is very combat oriented (the year in-game there is 2409 and there's open war against the Klingons and remnants of the Romulans). You do get to dress yourself and bridge officers how you like, though. You can choose almost all the styles. I prefer Mirror Earth, myself.

*If anyone, I can give out "referral keys" that let others demo the game for free. There's some restrictions on it, but I don't know what.

All right, I have all of the character bios read, reviewed and edited, and we’re almost ready to begin. So, from here on out....

    The Rules

    1. Have fun!

    2. Your posts should just be about what your own character is thinking or doing. Let other players write about what their characters are up to, and I’ll handle the rest of the universe (it’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it).

    3. Respect the continuity of previous posts in this game, and of Star Trek generally. Don’t create or refer to other characters, planets, ships etc. not already established in ST or in the game without checking with me first.

    4. This is a role-playing game, and I encourage you to write about anything which gives further meaning and depth to your character, both on- and off-duty.

    5. Only ST televised episodes and movies are canon for purposes of this thread. The recent J.J. Abrams movie Star Trek, Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and any ST books over the years, are not canon for us, except to the extent that I incorporate particular elements of them (for instance, from ST:TAS, the existence of Edoans, and Spock’s well-developed background from the episode “Yesteryear”).

    6. There is no Rule 6!

    7. I may introduce additional rules, as needed.

    8. Please do your best to ensure correct spelling and grammar.

    9. Use ST in-jokes sparingly.

    10. Other than agreeing for it to appear on Mellophant in the first place, you retain copyright to everything you write.

    11. Please spell out ranks ("Commander") if referred to without a name, but abbreviate if immediately followed by a name (“Capt. Kirk,” “Mr. Spock” or "Cmdr. Scott"). Here are the proper rank abbreviations in ascending order: Spec., Ens., Lt. JG, Lt., Lt. Cmdr., Cmdr., Capt., Rear Adm., Vice Adm., Adm., Fleet Adm.

    12. Please check the setup and game threads at least every other day.

    13. Don’t use the “Reply with quote” function in the game thread, to preserve narrative flow.

    14. Any questions? PM or email me if you wish privacy, but if it’s something that you think might interest the other players, by all means post it in the setup thread.

I'd like to suggest that players try to write in the third person and explicitly name their character at least once in a post. It makes for more readable prose and also gives a reminder for who plays which character.

More of nitpick on style: all those "." in the rank abbreviations bother me. "Capt Kirk", "Mr Spock", "Cmdr Scott" look much more correct to me. But I believe the correct form for rank abbreviations is actually all caps. I don't really expect any of that, but I'm pedantic enough to point it out.

Using third person (except in dialogue) and mentioning your character, even if only by last name, at least once per post, are good ideas.

Starfleet, fortunately, is not the U.S. military, and we will soon find ourselves three centuries hence. Please follow the format shown in Rule 11.

Good things (I hope) come to those who wait. Our first mission: http://www.mellophant.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11032

I think those first two posts really highlight the dramatic personality differences between Delaney and Faraz.

I should have added that Delaney tends to talk fast and often sounds both distracted and nervous at the same time but talks about engines and ships with the passion of a shade tree mechanic. New people won't phase him as new people are secondary to the adventure of new engines and machines.

Good point Pleonast on the Ensigns being familiar with each other from the Academy.

Oddly that was an unintentional pun, but it does work well.

Zuul or Elendil's Heir, is it safe to assume the USS Lexington was also Constitution Class?

USS Lexington (NCC-1709) is Constitution class. As is USS Hood (NCC-1703) and USS Merrimac (NCC-1715).

Yes, all of the ships mentioned so far are Constitution-class. BTW, I spell Merrimack with the final "k," like the river in New Hampshire after which the original U.S. Navy steam frigate, later converted to the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia, was named.

Once I've edited your character bio and sent you back the revised draft, you may post it in this thread, or not, as you see fit. You may redact any portions you don't wish the other players to see. Please be sure that any italicization (such as for ship names) carries over, and delete any notes I added to the very bottom of the record.

    Starfleet Personnel File

    CHARACTER NAME: Fujishiro Tomoe Iota
    USERNAME: Pleonast
    CURRENT RANK: Ensign
CURRENT ASSIGNMENT: Physics Officer, Sciences Department, USS Yorktown, NCC-1717

    ATTRIBUTES:
    • Charisma 10
    • Dexterity 11
    • Endurance 9
    • Intellect 12
    • Luck 8
    • Psi 12
    • Strength 7
    SPECIES: Human
    ETHNIC SUBGROUP: Japanese
    AGE: 28 (born 2241)
    SEX: Female
    HOMEWORLD: Kyoto City, Earth

    PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Ens. Fujishiro's Japanese ancestry is obvious, with a small, fit build (165 cm, 52 kg) and tan skin, black eyes and black, shoulder-length hair. She keeps a neat, clean appearance with no cosmetics, and her hair is tied back. She is a strict vegetarian, but is otherwise adventurous in trying new foods.

    PERSONALITY PROFILE:
Iota, as she is informally known, has a good sense of humor and is open and trusting, although she is shy around newly-met strangers. She has an intense work ethic, typically spending all her free time continuing her assigned tasks, or on her own side projects. It's not unusual to see her catnapping in the lab while an experiment is running, instead of sleeping in her quarters. Her duty stations and lab space are kept impeccably tidy and she keeps meticulously detailed notes. Iota does not seem to take time for leisure or recreational activities, although she enjoys some social activities with friends. She does not, as yet, display any interest in romantic relationships.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND: Starfleet Academy Class of 2266, top decile, in Physics (Radiative Fields) and Engineering (Sensor Systems).
SERVICE RECORD: Physics Specialist, USS Hood, 2266-2268; Assistant Physics Officer, USS Merrimack, 2268-2269.
CAREER GOAL: To gain a wide range of practical experience and theoretical knowledge in several scientific fields.

    Notes on name:

Fujishiro is her family name. Use it any formal, professional or on-duty setting. As she says it, it sounds something like "foo-jih-sh-roh". She doesn't mind the more English "foo-jee-shee-roh", since everyone calls her that anyway.

Tomoe is her "first" name. She only uses this name when stating her full name. As she says it: "toh-moh-eh". Also, "toh-moh-ay" is fine.

Iota is her "middle" name. Friends are encouraged to call her this, when not on duty. She pronounces it like "yoh-tah" with an unaspirated "t". Similar to the "tt" in "letter". She does not appreciate being called "eye-oh-tuh".

    CHARACTER NAME: James "Jim" Delaney
    CURRENT RANK: Ensign
CURRENT ASSIGNMENT: Assistant Chief Engineer, Engineering Department, USS Yorktown, NCC-1717

    ATTRIBUTES: Charisma 7 Dexterity 11 Endurance 9 Intellect 10 Luck 10 Psi 10 Strength 12

SPECIES: Human Mixed race AGE: 22 SEX: Male
HOMEWORLD: Born on Earth, but raised on the Heinlein L5 colony.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 5’10” and wiry, with brown hair worn very short; dark eyes and light brown skin color.

PERSONALITY PROFILE: Delaney is inquisitive, inventive, somewhat geeky, at times impatient with roundabout speech, but always eager to learn and very dedicated to "his" engines. He can be distracted by unknown or unfamiliar technology, and is likely to spend off-duty hours tearing down a spare item and rebuilding it to see what makes it tick and what could be done to make it work even better. He has made a partial study of Cmdr. Montgomery Scott's career, as Scott helped to design and Constitution-class starships' engines.

Family: His father, Dr. Stanley Delaney, runs the Engineering plant of the Heinlein colony. His mother, Dr. Juliet Brown, is a skilled surgeon. His older sister Pamela is in medical school and his younger brother, Martin, is in his final year at Starfleet Academy, training to become a xenosociologist.

HOBBIES OR INTERESTS: Science and engineering, tinkering and inventing, programming and, oddly enough, fantasy fiction of the 19th and 20th centuries.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND: Starfleet Academy Class of 2266.

SERVICE RECORD: Delaney spent 14 months at Starfleet's Advance Engineering Prototype Base, then got his requested transfer to USS Ganymede, a fast scout with cutting-edge engines and a small crew, where he had the chance to work on all aspects of the ship. As he helped to install and test the experimental engines on the Ganymede, he received the junior berthing in a six-man engineering crew with cross-training for several other major billets.

CAREER GOAL: Chief Engineer of a Constitution-class starship and, eventually, appointment as Starfleet's Chief Fleet Architect.

Notes: Lt. Cdr. J. F. Delaney was the Engineering Officer on the USS Yorktown during the Battle of Midway. In theory as a minor fact, my character would be a descendent of his but not be aware of it at least yet.

I noticed today my Int was lower than I hoped but my Str & Dex are high. I am not sure if it is possible to tweak this still at this point. No big deal but hard to be a geek tech type with an average Int.

    CHARACTER NAME: Faraz Pourtash
    CURRENT RANK: Ensign
CURRENT ASSIGNMENT: Helmsman, Command Department, USS Yorktown, NCC-1717

    ATTRIBUTES:
    * Charisma 8
    * Dexterity 12
    * Endurance 7
    * Intellect 11
    * Luck 10
    * Psi 4
    * Strength 6

    SPECIES: Human
    RACIAL/ETHNIC SUBGROUP, IF ANY: Persian
    AGE: 25
    SEX: Male
    HOMEWORLD: Deneva Prime
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Faraz has olive-toned skin, curly dark brown hair and light green eyes. He's 5'10" and has lanky, athletic musculature. He has a fairly mild, non-threatening appearance, neither terribly attractive nor unattractive.
PERSONALITY PROFILE: Faraz is obsessive about what interests him, which will change depending on what the newest, shiniest thing to present itself might be. He can be casually sarcastic and cruel to those to whom he has no loyalty, but once his loyalty is given he is fiercely protective.
SPOUSE, SIGNIFICANT OTHER OR NEXT OF KIN, IF ANY: His parents, Aban and Dr. Razeena Pourtash, and his two younger sisters, Parveen and Esta.
HOBBIES OR INTERESTS: Astronomy, unsurprisingly, and astrophysics. He's an avid soccer player and has had some minor interest in other sports over the years. Faraz is also passionate about the arts and paints for recreation.
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND: Starfleet Academy Class of 2266
SERVICE RECORD: Ens. Pourtash previously served on the USS Lexington under the command of Commodore Robert Wesley. It was a standard junior officer rotation and he worked closely under the ship's Science Officer before earning the post of relief helmsman.
CAREER GOAL: Faraz seeks to eventually command his own starship.

And everybody knows engineering is simply the slower younger brother of physics. Of course Jim should "only" get a ten in intellect.

As I mentioned before, all Attributes are on a 1-12 scale (I suppose Kirk might be a good bit higher on Charisma or Luck, or Spock on Intellect, but they're definitely outliers). A 10 Intellect is nothing to sneeze at. Before I began rolling dice, everyone started at 6 on all Attributes, subject to the +2 bonus or -1 penalty you requested, and subject to your own description of your character, which led to some further tweaks. Starfleet is composed of the Federation's best and brightest, so every character excels in one or more Attributes.

The Yorktown has no Ship's Counselor; that was a later Starfleet practice. There might be a psychiatrist (like Dr. Helen Noel aboard the Enterprise) on the Medical staff, though. What do you think we should have?

I would suggest "Sir" or "Ma'am," depending on the gender of the officer being addressed, unless that officer indicates a different preference. The custom is, however, to address subordinate officers (if not by rank and last name) as "Mr. [last name]," regardless of gender, as shown in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.

I would vote that a psychiatrist appears to be a non-standard position on the Constitution Class. At least one of the Doctors or Nurses should have some fair training in psychology/therapy but not a primary position.

Thanks for the files. It's always neat to see who we all are (and it's not like we can't look each other up on the ship's computer).

It looks like the Doc is the ranking player. :salute:

Ranking player, yes, but not a line officer, so he can't boss you around unless it's for medical purposes. Doctors are immediately commissioned as lieutenants in the U.S. military, in recognition of their advanced degrees and professional standing, and I posit that Starfleet does the same. Dr. Brownlock has been through the Academy just like the rest of you, as you see.

Please take a look at this Straight Dope discussion thread on ST loose threads and unanswered questions (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/...d.php?t=556686).

Then, in the next week, PM me - don't post it here in the setup thread! - with brief descriptions of any three adventures that might interest you, either from that thread or from your own imagination ("Return to [particular planet]," "Political intrigue among the [alien race]," "Find out whatever happened to [whoever]," etc.). I offer no ironclad guarantees that we'll do any of them, and I have our first several missions pretty clearly in mind, but I'd like to know what interests you, generally or specifically, for future ST adventures.

    Thanks, and again, welcome aboard!

I'll try to get a post in over the weekend, but weekends are family time for me and have not much spare time.

As for adventure ideas, no giant spiders please.

Jeremi smiled and indicated the PADD. "And what do you find so fascinating?"

"Oh, nothing fascinating, just puzzling. My surname, Brownlock, would suggest brown hair. I'm just researching back through my family's genetic history to see where the deviation point occurred, and why I should be stuck with this ridiculous color..."
I guess you missed the part about not narrating the other characters thoughts or actions. No harm. Just please don't do it again. Jeremi does not care what some officer finds interesting.

    Default TOS

    Hi Everyone.

I'm getting up to speed on everything TOS. Watching episodes on DVD and looking through my extensive collection of books and magazines about the TV series.

I can see why the majority of this group voted for TOS era as our game setting.

To be honest, when I watched reruns as a kid, I thought TOS production and stories were kind of cheesy.

I can now appreciate what this series meant as far as breaking new ground and tackling some pretty sensitive issues during the 60's. TOS was and always will be cutting edge.

Nicely put, WES! Of course, sometimes the cheese was part of what made it great, but still, compared to most of the crap on the tube at the time (1966-69), TOS really was a pretty damn good show.

The DS9 episode "Trials and Tribble-ations" had a nice retro-Sixties feel to it, using as it did CGI-tinkered footage of the TOS episode "The Trouble with Tribbles." I sort of had it in the back of my mind as I was preparing this game, and hope it will be just as much fun for all of you.
