Well, I was going to have Sherlock Holmes make a cameo... (kidding!)

There will be elements of different works of fiction showing up in the game, but I wouldn't worry about name dropping. If an author comes up I want to use, then that author is simply aware of what's happening.

I would truly love that and technically Doyle was just cleaning up Watson's journals wasn't he? Much like Tolkien translated the Red Book of Westmarch.

Authors use to be more prone to pretend events were real and I think Doyle's stuff was anchored tightly enough in reality that his could be on exaggerated tellings and not fiction.

Lovecraft and Wells not so much.

Just as a heads up, Wells and Verne won't be specifically used though some things may inspire machines or concepts that appear. But nothing that will be really obvious like, "Oh, that's Captain Nemo."

Just FYI, Conan Doyle would still be alive for another two years as of early 1928. H.G. Wells died in 1946.

Cluricaun, every time your character touches that valise, I want to make a Pulp Fiction crack. It's tough to stay in voice.

I just like getting to use the word valise. Zuulie the Dutchman was kind enough to give some very nice items, and I need a way to carry them without resorting to a backpack or a steamer trunk.

And don't make jokes at a gangsters expense, are you fucking crazy?

Well, yeah, kind of. I didn't plan it, but Halifax has become a bit of a wisecracking loon.

Since I would be highly shocked if this encounter doesn't end in combat , I wanted to give some instructions on how to handle it.

Initiative, turns, etc are difficult to handle over a message board, so I'm not going to worry about what order you go in. Simply respond when you have the time. I'm only going to make one storyteller post for you guys to respond to each six hours to hopefully give everyone a chance to post their response once combat begins. I've got at least one player who can't play during the day and I don't want to exclude her entirely which is why I'm going to stretch it out like that.

Each player can respond once for every storyteller post I make during combat. Each response gets one attack and one defense. Up until there are actual attacks going on you can continue to post as much as you like as your characters figure out how to respond. I'll be flexible about how much time is passing in game before the flesh is flayed from your bones something important happens.

Zuul if you run the combat over the weekend, I think many of us will miss several rounds if you are posting a round per 6 hours. I posted a general idea of my intent for several rounds and that might work better in the long run. In fact I need to add one more.

Do you want to just have lengthy "this is what I'll be doing" style posts and I'll only update once a day over the weekend? Would that work better?

I'm not sure, it might work differently for different players. I gave enough instructions I think to probably provide a good idea of what Recife will do over at least the next few rounds. I was thinking this might be the best method to move the game along for weekends especially.

In my game combat will usually be 1-3 rounds at a time and at other times 4+ rounds long and occasionally, "the party overwhelms the remaining monsters and these two players got hurt" with some detailed descriptions for the story.

All right, that sounds good to me. I'm used to running combat via chat, which is a lot easier since it's almost like a tabletop game.

That makes sense, this message board format took some getting use to. I would say we built in on the fly as none of us had done it before.

So it's zombie scarabs, then, is it?

Even a man who is pure of heart and says his prayers by night, may be eviscerated by angry mummified jackals when they go wandering into mysterious tombs in the desert.
