Default Born of the Deep Setup Thread

"The Event", as it came to be known in certain circles, occurred between December 17th and 18th, 1902. Beginning at 22:12 GMT on the 17th, an unprecedented amount of interference began on the transatlantic telegraph lines. This continued until 07:24 GMT on the 18th.

Starting shortly after midnight AST on the 18th and continuing on into the early evening, each child born in Nova Scotia during this period was described as "incomplete." Hands, feet, eyes, noses, and mouths were missing. Some were born dead, missing any facial features at all. Most of the rest died within hours. Only one of the children is recorded as having survived to adulthood.

On the 18th in Skerries, Co. Dublin, Ireland, a fisherman's wife reported finding that her cat had birthed kittens in the night. What was unusual about this litter was that each kitten allegedly had a human feature: tiny infant hands, human eyes, a child's mouth, etc. She offered to sell them to several universities for study, but the photographs of them were denounced as "fakes" by experts and outside of the county she was derided as a fool.

Several earthquakes were reported around the "ring of fire" in the Pacific starting on the 18th at approximately 12:15 GMT+14. A young aristocratic Dutchman by the name of Dirk de Graeff who was in New Guinea at the time claimed a tribe of people--the Dunyawu--sacrificed a boy and ate him in response to the earthquakes. "After the last of the child's flesh was stripped from his bones, the ground ceased its movements," De Graeff wrote. He claimed the ritual was finished by 21:30 GMT+14. No further proof of the existence of the Dunyawu beyond De Graeff's notes was ever found, leading many to think he had conflated the names of two separate tribes or created them whole cloth.

Unusual storms were reported in coastal cities across the globe. In the midst of a particularly heavy electrical storm a swarm of ants evacuated their colony in Mvezo, South Africa. Several people were skeletonized within moments before the ants simply marched off.

By the time the sun set on the eastern coast of North America on the 18th, the Event was over. Because of the isolated nature of each sign, only a select few became aware that they were connected. Aside from the time frame, the only other sign that implied it was a single event was that a number of children born during it in coastal cities across the world were unusually gifted. Twenty-five years after the Event, De Graeff began collecting the now adult children of the Event.

    This is their story.

    ***

This game takes place in the spring of 1928, with a party of at least five young adventurers. If people are interested, I'll put up a dossier for "gifts" and backgrounds of the party for people to choose from and then PM players character sheets which can be personalized from there. The emphasis is going to be more on story-telling and adventure than factoring stats, though I will use stats and dice to decide the outcome of things. I'm using a simplified game system I've used for running online RPGs before, so no prior experience on the part of the players is needed.

The game will have ancient deities, weird science, cannibalism, seafaring adventure, and flappers.

I'm in please. Sadly the other games all fell by the wayside on both boards.

I would love to participate, even though flappers disturb me greatly.

I have no idea what's going on here, but with a burgeoning interest in RPGs I'd like to find out.

As soon as I hide my old dance recital pictures, so as not to disturb OCS, I'd also like to be in on this.

Excellent! That's the five I absolutely need, but I can handle more if there's anyone else interested and alternates in case someone has to drop out are always appreciated.

Each character is codenamed after a location near where they were allegedly born. When you choose one, tell me the first name you want and gender and I'll PM you with further details. All characters are 25 and were born at the same time:

    Codename: Halifax
Notes: Born without eyes and raised by occultists, Halifax has the ability to see things psychically. With effort, Halifax is capable of breaking through illusion with this ability or even catching glimpses of the past.

    Codename: Berlin
Notes: The only child of a former vivisectionist, this individual appears to be suffering from some form of dwarfism, with an adult height of 3'10". Despite this, Berlin is quite physically tough and has the ability to enhance his/her own senses far beyond human limits.

    Codename: Chesapeake
Notes: The child of a country doctor, Chesapeake is strong and intelligent. S/he was a medical student before being recruited by De Graeff. Chesapeake has the ability to manipulate emotions in others.

    Codename: Hong Kong
Notes: Brilliant but somewhat socially stunted, Hong Kong was also studying medicine when recruited. The difference being that Hong Kong has the ability to heal with a touch.

    Codename: Sydney
Notes: This young engineer is quite intelligent, but not as physically robust as some of the other recruits. Sydney does have an ace up the sleeve, though: the ability to manipulate electricity, even turning it into a weapon.

    Codename: Kobe
Notes: An orphan who survived alone on the streets for some time before beginning to work for a Yakuza organization. While not the physically toughest of the recruits, the ability to create illusions largely makes up for that.

    Codename: Bristol
Notes: Unlike the working class backgrounds of many of the other recruits, Bristol has somewhat more impressive connections. Oozing with charisma and gifted with telepathy, Bristol can be a surprisingly unpleasant enemy.

    Codename: Tarifa
Notes: A thief without peer, Tarifa fell into crime simply because it was so easy. There's little reason not to steal something when you're literally fast enough to take it without anyone seeing you.

    Codename: Athens
Notes: Lacking the intelligence and social skills of many of the other recruits, Athens excels at being tough. Whether it involves firearms or arm-wrestling, Athens is difficult to beat. Athens has the ability to manipulate stone like clay.

    Codename: Recife
Notes: Small and fairly ordinary, Recife is surprisingly charismatic. Despite having been born into poverty, Recife has managed to amass quite a bit of wealth by the age of twenty-five. Of all the abilities seen, this one appears to be the most mysterious as it can only be described as a supernatural sort of good luck.

Absolutely. When I send out the character sheets you'll have the opportunity to choose a couple of skills you'd like to have and some resources.

I could handle Kobe, Tarifa, or Recife probably as well if that works better. New first names on request.

I haven't received the character requests from Marsilia and RabbitMage yet. Once they choose, I'll let you know. I think we'll be able to handle one more player at this point, though.

Done, but seeing as how this is the sexist 1920s I will need to know if you're playing a man or a woman for Bristol's background.

    1) Are we all on the deck of the boat together now?

    2) Can we all see each other?

    3) If 1 and 2 are "yes," should we go around and self-describe by way of introduction, even if our characters don't actually say "Hi, my name is Bob," or are you going to handle the initial exposition of the characters?

    4) Thanks for running this. I am excited.

You're all on deck. You can see each other as you get into the dining room. Go right ahead and self-describe/introduce yourselves. If there's something I want to note about a character I'll toss it out there.

I think, in order to make the game thread more coherent and fun to read, we might want to agree on some conventions. We seem to all be writing in third person, but right now, we have a couple of name bolders and a couple of non-name bolders, and we have people writing in present tense as well as past tense.

I personally like name bolding and present tense, but as long as we're all onthe same page, I'm flexible.

Sounds reasonable to me. (I haven't played this sort of game online before. I'm generally clueless about the conventions.)

Sounds good, OCS. Let's stick with bolding names and keeping the text in third person, present tense.

Considering it is the 1920s and we do have an electrical engineer with eldritch powers, I wouldn't be surprised if you guys make a death ray by game's end.

Ditto as to both Arkham and the death ray. This is fun.
