Default "Confessions of a Book Pirate" has given me a rage blackout

    Fuck you, book pirate.l

Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you. Fuck you. Fuck you up the ass with a rusty chainsaw. Fuck you. Fuck. You.

    Fuck you.

    And also, fuck your mother.

Realistically and financially, however, I feel the impact of e-piracy is overrated, at least in terms of ebooks.
Fuck your sister. Fuck your wife. Fuck you.

Yeah, I pirate movies. I do, and sometimes music, and I've even helped people on this board do the same. I'm a filthy, piece of shit pirate. I do it because I'm lazy and it's convenient. But you know what? I don't fucking try to justify what I do in a long, ridiculous argument. I don't think it is justifiable. I'm a thief, and my thievery may or may not have a negative impact on the people I'm stealing from, but morally, I'm in the wrong. And you are too, you piece of shit. "It's okay to steal from faceless corporations" wasn't a compelling argument when Napster first came along and it's not a compelling argument now.

I guess what I'm saying is, if you're going to commit a crime at least have the decency to be ashamed of yourself.

And also, fuck you book pirate.
I'm still swimming in harmony. I'm still dreaming of flight. I'm still lost in the waves night after night...

Irony: one of the worst book pirates I know also happens to work for a publisher. And she chastises me when I buy music.

Yanno what pisses me off the most about that article? The way that it repeats, as an article of faith, that the Baen Free Library, while it works for them, isn't applicable to any other publisher.

    Based on what, pray tell?

I have stolen exactly one e-book in my time, and only because I wanted to see what the book said, but refuse to give money to anyone associated with it and they don't have it at the library.

Besides, most pirate books are just .pdf files run through notepad and are full of formatting issues and typos making them nearly illegible and therefore really not worth getting. However if the Kindle, etc really take off I expect that the quality will improve.
Hell, if I didn't do things just because they made me feel a bit ridiculous, I wouldn't have much of a social life. - Santo Rugger.

This bears repeating. One of the reasons I'll prefer to pay even for an ebook version of an out-of-copyright title is because I can expect the formatting to be more professional, and that it got at least skimmed by a copy editor.

I have a couple of 'free range' ebooks on my computer. In both instances, however, I found the files via links on the author's website, with a permission from the author to enjoy an unedited version of a new release. I do not view these as pirated ebooks, i.e. I don't feel I've done anything immoral by acquiring and reading them. I am aware that the publishing house might disagree with me, though.
