Would You Eat Fresh-From-The-Chicken Eggs?
Just curious -- my brother has a slew of chickens in his yard, and every time I visit I always come home with some of the spoils. I love 'em -- there's no question they taste better than store-bought -- but my wife thinks this is positively revolting. She's of the "I don't want to know where they came from" mentality. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that she knows this is irrational -- I mean, no matter how much you put it out of your mind, you still know where they came from.
So, how 'bout you? Eat 'em fresh if you can?

I would. I eat fresh deer meat as well.
That does remind me of a funny story from back home.
A guy we knew had two daughters, at the time they were around 10 or 12 years old. Like us, they lived out in the country. Anyway, one weekend the girls wanted to bake a cake. They pestered their Dad to go to town and buy some eggs, so they could make the cake. He said "Why don't y'all just go out in the yard and get some eggs?". The girls said "Oh, Daddy! Not hen eggs !!"

Is there any reason that one shouldn't, I mean besides the ick factor? Do eggs need to be processed somehow to ensure safety? Because I don't want salmonella from my salmon omlette, but other than that I'd go to town on them. I love eggs.

Hell, I can remember as a kid, sometimes we'd kill a hen, my mother would find an egg inside, and we'd eat that. Now that's fresh!

I'd wash off the outer shell first but otherwise I wouldn't treat them any differently. Oh, and salmonella is present inside the eggshell of eggs from an infected chicken, because it sets up 'shop' in the ovaries. So treat them like regular eggs in that respect.

My in-laws use to have chickens and do I miss those eggs. The deep orange yokes were much more fragile than store bought eggs, but so much better tasting. My wife and I pine for them every Saturday when I'm making breakfast.

My family raised chickens my entire life. I never even had reason to buy eggs from a store until after I was 16. If I could get farm fresh eggs, and farm fresh chickens, I would in a heartbeat. They are superior in every way.

Not only would I eat them, I prefer them. My mom has chickens and whenever I cook at her house I look for an excuse to use the fresh eggs. Handmade pasta with just-out-of-the-chicken egg yolks? Unparalleled deliciousness. Vanilla custard? Or just a simple poach? Unbelievable.

I get free range egg as often as possible from a small farm maybe 10 minutes down the road, moreso in the summer since it's a side road down to a provincial park/beach access area, which I don't venture out to so much in the winter.
Eggs. They're what's for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. :D

I would and have eaten them fresh from the chicken. My sister use to keep chickens.
BTW: I wash off all eggs before I use them. Just a habit I think I got from my Mom.

I don't really get this mentality. She's already eating hen menstruation. I had a girlfriend who freaked out when I told her I knew the name of a bull whose minced meat I had eaten at a friend's house. Hey, I say, I not only know his name but I know he spent his life frolicking around a huge enclosure and screwing cows whenever he felt like it. A lot better than eating some Belgian concentration camp graduate.

Oh yeah, I would love to try eggs that fresh.
In Egypt the eggs we bought in the grocery story usually had chicken shit all over them - not because they were fresh (they weren't, especially) but just because they never cleaned them off before putting them into cartons for sale. This, in a country where bird flu is a big concern. It was pretty gross.
I would not take a cow teat and aim it into my mouth while milking a cow, though. Milk weirds me out a little - give me ice-cold UHT milk over warm fresh milk any day.

I get fresh eggs from a chicken-raising friend. I have found if you boil the water, then lower the eggs (preferably at room temp) into the water using a spoon or tongs, and then boil for 13-15 minutes and let cool, they will peel as easily as older eggs.

I'm not much of an egg-eater, but I'd still prefer fresh-from-the-chicken over the supermarket shelf.
The bit about chicken shit reminds me of a story Lenny Bruce told about working on a farm in his youth. One of his jobs was selling produce at the farm's roadside stand. One day one of the customers commented on how fresh the eggs must be since there was some shit on them, so Lenny began 'dosing' all the cartons with extra chicken shit and bits of straw. This worked great until one day someone cleaned out the coop before he could get there and there was no chicken shit left.
So he used cow shit instead. Nobody noticed the difference.

Considering we have hens, it would be freaking useless if we didn't eat the eggs.
I love when I go to pick them up and one is still warm and might have a tiny feather stuck on it, awww!
Small hijack: My sister's partner has a similar "I don't want to know" mentality, concerning meat. She is a big meat eater but refuses to come to visit us because we raise chickens and such, and kill and eat them. You would think we would force her to watch or something.
That didn't prevent her from eating one of our chickens (coq au vin, mmmh!), but it wasn't at our house, so I guess that's different!

Indeed. Which is why I keep the eggs from my friends' farm in the fridge for a couple of weeks before hard-boiling them. You still get that incredibly better free-range, noncommercially raised egg flavor but you can get the shell off without taking half the white with it.
Even better than fresh free-range chicken eggs are ditto from ducks. The yolks are simply amazing.

When we first got our chickens, it weirded out the Husband a bit to know the birds whose products he was eating. I think he felt a bit guilty, like he was stealing. I pointed out that it was either eat them or be overrun with chickens, because the rooster was certainly not going to practice restraint. He's ok with it now.

And now I realize I never answered the OP. I love "farm fresh" eggs, but I've never had the opportunity to have them quite that fresh. I'd love to try them, though. I also lack patience with those who don't want to know where their food came from.

You bet I'll eat them. I'll be happy to eat the chicken, too. And Bambi? I've got 15 pounds of deer in the freezer right now. When I was a little kid, I only had this vague idea about meat coming from animals, somehow. When it finally dawned on me that a chicken's thigh was basically the same thing as my thigh, it was like a light went on. A-ha!! We're eating their muscles and organs. (Pretty obvious, sure, but I was just a 4-year-old city kid, barely beyond the point of thinking "food comes from the grocery store".) Dad thought it was hilarious: he asked me what I thought about the whole thing, now that I knew, and I enthusiastically suggested, "Let's kill something and eat it!"

My hubby and I own a couple of rental properties in rural West Virginia, and every so often, when we go to collect rent and such, there's a B&B we stay the night at. The B&B is on 50 acres, and is a working farm.
Breakfast is often something made from very fresh (just fetched this morning) eggs, and perhaps some cheese made from goat's milk. The milk served with the morning coffee is also goat's milk, unless otherwise requested.
Yep, fresh from the hen eggs are fine by me!

My mom has a farm and they get so many eggs that they keep them stacked in flats in the kitchen.
Apparently you don't need to refrigerate eggs at all until you do refrigerate them.
They started composting the extras after they were more than a month old just because they didn't have the room. :cry:
I wish I could eat 'em.
They don't often eat meat, as they try to be self sufficent, and they aren't raising animals for meat. They do have a freezer full of chickens, however, and they've slaughtered a kid to eat when we were visiting. Male goats are usually headed for somebody's plate anyway.
My daughter loved the goat meat, and she can (and does) milk and make cheese when she is there.

I used to work on a poultry farm, so yes, I've eaten the eggs I collected from the chickens. I've also eaten the meat from the birds we slaughtered.

I did yesterday. A friend of ours has about 30 chickens and we went out to visit and check out their setup. My 8yo is a born chicken farmer; she spent the whole time happily picking up chickens, petting chickens, and poking around for eggs. And we had fun chasing the ducks, too. We can't get on their egg route yet, but we brought home 4 free eggs in rainbow colors, which became dinner. I'm looking forward to becoming a proper customer, but at this rate my mom's (future, unbought) chickens will start producing first. Her coop is almost done and she plans to buy pullets to start out with.

I'd love to try them. I'm not at all grossed out by the idea, but I'm a city girl and never really get a chance to try things "fresh from the farm" except some produce at farmer's markets.

My sister keeps chickens and so do some of my friends. I love it when they give me eggs - they're so much tastier than the ones in the shops.
In my experience, the best tasting ones are from chickens that have been fed (or have a good opportunity to scratch and forage for) lots of invertebrates such as crickets, worms and woodlice. I guess that probably amounts to saying that those invertebrates are tasty, as the chicken's body doesn't absolutely and intensively reprocess everything it eats.
