"Stand" and "Shiny Happy People," begone! I remember watching R.E.M. perform "Shiny Happy People" on Saturday Night Live when that album came out. My roommate Charlie, who was not familiar with R.E.M., walked in and started giggling uncontrollably. He assumed that Kate Pierson was the host that week, and this must be a skit. He laughed even harder when I told him it was a real song, and a Top 10 hit at that.
