He has conclusive evidence that it is there, since he attempted to play 27. ... h2. As I remarked on telling him the move was illegal, it was provable that the h-pawn was still on the file. I didn't explain, but the proof runs thus: When Black captured on h6 earlier it was behind his own pawn, so cannot have been the original White h-pawn (not of a White pawn at all, since White's capture on h6 was not preceded by a pawn-capture notification). The only captures on the g-file were on g2, hence also not by the h-pawn. Therefore White's h-pawn has not left the file, and since Black's pawn advanced successfully to h3, there must still be a White pawn on h2.
If I were in WES's shoes I wouldn't take on h2. There has to be a good chance that the King will recapture on g2 in which case it would be able to recapture on h2 after White was told of the capture. I'll update the graphic later, but White has taken with the Bishop.
-
Actually at this point WES will know after the next move, if the pawn is taken, that the White King is either on F1, G2 or H1
-
In fact, WES has been told for all practical purposes that the King is on f1 - or it would not have been in check on the short diagonal - so that leaves it on f1 or g2.

And Black is now only the exchange up instead of a hairsbreadth less than a whole Queen. Continuing to keep her at the back and using the Rooks and pawns to explore might have been a better strategy.

Did I miss a couple of moves?
If White's king cannot retake on h2 did Wes swing the other rook to h8 rather than a straight capture from h6?

Black logically doubled rooks on the h-file, knowing the White pawn was on h2 (could have gone to h3 or h4 on move 31, but would have shown up when the Rook move got bounced). It's a little lucky for White that the Rook on c2 is now protected so even if Black sweeps the rank looking for captures next move, he can't win by it. I wonder if WES will try to shepherd the g-pawn home?
ETA: Of course, if White's last had been 31. Kg1, Black would now be losing a Rook instead of gaining a pawn...

It took EH a while to find his 33rd move - he couldn't block or capture his way out of the check, and was confused because he'd assumed the second rank was still guarded but I hadn't announced checkmate. I now wonder whether the White King is going to carry on running for the queenside - after 34. Kd3 Black wouldn't have any more checks for a while.
-
I'm betting on hiding behind the Knight. If it gets taken then its an easy capture in response.
I wonder if WES will start pushing the g-pawn down.
-
So with the white king behind the knight and that protecting the rook, where are WES' pieces?
-
Rooks on h1 and h3, and White's Rook has gone to g2.

So, do we have a pawn to queen race going on?

Yup, and they'll quite possibly get there at the same time. There is no announcement when a pawn promotes.

So I guess both of the have queened pawns then?

Interestingly, Black's king hunt could backfire here. If White takes on a3, Black is down a piece after all his hard work.
-
This could backfire indeed and at that point, Black will need to shepherd a few more of the pawns down.
-
Looks like Black is out of check for the mo, though no captures yet.
-
Yep, diagram follows later but in brief, White didn't even try to capture on a3, Black is about to swing his other Rook into the hunt as well so White is probably in trouble.

EH didn't try the capture until after his King had already moved away, so missed his chance to gain material. Still, that's a Queen exchange and probably puts an end to the mating try for now.
