The Rules
(First posted July 20, 2010)
1. Have fun!
2. Your posts should just be about what your own character is thinking or doing. Let other players write about what their characters are up to, and I’ll handle the rest of the Universe (it’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it).
2a. Write using third person (except in dialogue) and mention your character, even if only by last name, at least once per post.
2b. You can say your character is going to try to do something, or (if he or she has the authority to do so) order another character to do something, but then leave it to me as to how it turns out. If you write, for instance, something very simple and easy like "[My character's name] brushes her teeth," that's fine. Or even "She fires her phaser," that's fine too. But "She fires her phaser and hits and kills the bad guy" presumes too much. If the action is complicated or depends upon skill, chance, luck or cooperation by others, just write what you're trying to do, and not the end result.
3. Respect the continuity of previous posts in this game, and of Star Trek generally. Don’t create or refer to other characters, planets, ships etc. not already established in ST or in the game without checking with me first.
4. This is a role-playing game, and I encourage you to write about anything which gives further meaning and depth to your character, both on- and off-duty.
5. Only ST televised episodes and movies are canon for purposes of this thread. The J.J. Abrams movies, Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and any ST books over the years, are not canon for us, except to the extent that I incorporate particular elements of them (for instance, from ST:TAS, the existence of Edoans, and Spock’s well-developed background from the episode “Yesteryear”).
6. There is no Rule 6!
7. The Game Master (GM) may introduce additional rules, as needed.
8. Please do your best to ensure correct spelling and grammar.
9. Use ST in-jokes sparingly.
10. Other than agreeing for it to appear on Mellophant in the first place, you retain copyright to everything you write.
11. Please spell out ranks ("Commander") if referred to without a name, but abbreviate if immediately followed by a name (“Capt. Kirk,” “Mr. Spock” or "Cmdr. Scott"). Here are the proper rank abbreviations in ascending order: Spec., Ens., Lt. JG, Lt., Lt. Cmdr., Cmdr., Capt., Fleet Capt., Cmdre., Rear Adm., Vice Adm., Adm., Fleet Adm.
12. Please check the setup and game threads, and post in the game thread, at least every other day.
13. Don’t use the “Reply with quote” function in the game thread, to preserve narrative flow.
14. When a player has, despite three warnings, persisted in conduct which the GM has asked him or her to stop, the GM may discharge the player from the game. The player will thereafter not post in either the setup or game threads; if the player does so, such posts may be removed by the GM. The former player may ask the GM to be reinstated no earlier than one month after discharge. The GM has sole discretion as to warnings, discharge and reinstatement.
15. Any questions? PM or email me if you wish privacy, but if it’s something that you think might interest the other players, by all means post it here in the setup thread.

Invitation to play
(First posted July 6, 2010)
In one week, I'll begin a Star Trek role-playing game (RPG) here on Mellophant, along the lines of What Exit?'s highly successful Lord of the Rings D&D campaign. The rules would be a blend of FASA, Decipher and Last Unicorn ST games' rules for easy, seamless play. Players will be newly-assigned junior officers aboard a Starfleet ship not already centrally featured on ST. I'll help you create your own player character (PC). The Captain and First Officer would be non-player characters (NPCs), at least to start.
Sometime in the next week, please post here:
1. If you want to play, what species, gender and shipboard assignment (any and all) would interest you. I'd like to have at least one player in each shipboard department, if possible, so that the player characters (PCs) can easily form a landing party/away team, or at least the nucleus of one, but please don't feel limited by what other potential players post here. Humans are preferred (they apparently make up the majority of Starfleet, after all), but just about any Federation member species may be chosen. If you go with a Human, what racial or ethnic group would you like to play?
2. In what era would you prefer the game to be set? Mention as many as apply; also tell me if there's an era of ST for which you have a particular aversion:
ENT
TOS
TAS
TOS movies
TNG
DS9
VGR
TNG movies
Since VGR (ST's "present day")
3. Any other questions, comments or reactions.
The game will not be set in the same alternate timeline or multiverse as last year's J.J. Abrams-directed ST movie, since there will very likely be sequels and I'd rather not get whipsawed on canon, continuity, etc.
Several Mellophant members and other online friends have already expressed an interest in taking part in our game. I can't guarantee that everyone who posts here will be able to play initially, but there will be a waitlist for any extra folks. I'm thinking of starting with six players, but may add more.
Thanks for your interest!
